OK. If you had a one (or two) liner you could slip into a hypothetical FF episode somewhere, what would it be? This is not for actual quotes, but quotes that *could* have been (or perhaps could be).

Here's mine to start us off:

River (Speaking to Niska): "I already know who you are."
(Cut to exterior view. Niska screaming.)

HATEHATEHATEFOX

Scene: Ext - forest-y world

Background: Rabid foxes are terrorizing clean-living folks

Mal: The best way to clear these vermin out is poison - not torture, you hear me Jayne?

Jayne: Yeah, maybe. [not convinced] ... But I was gonna get me a tail for my hat. [disappointed]

ROCKETJOCK

Scene: Serenity's dinner table. Someone --Wash, or possibly Simon -- is slightly tipsy, and singing a parody of "The Hero of Canton", not realizing that he is sitting down right next to Jayne.

Without ceasing what he's doing (eating, cleaning a gun, whatever), Jayne's hand shoots out, and grips the offender by the neck.

Jayne: "Make fun of me, if you got the nerve. But don't ever, ever make fun of the song!"

Wow!I think that's the shinyest thing I've ever read. For me, it speaks volumes.
Thanks.

Mal charges his pistol and presses the end of the barrel against Badger's nose. Badger's eyes dart left and right, but with his back against the wall of the cargo bay and flanked by Jayne and Zoe, he realizes he has no escape. He gulps audibly, sweat pouring down his face.

Mal: You know, once again I find I'm needing to make it clear to your type that I am not the sort of man you should be foolin' with. Now I've indulged your little delusions of being some great, grand muckety-muck simply because every time you got antsy, you also had me and mine very outnumbered. Well. . .you don't have us outnumbered now, so let me explain how things are to you in terms you'll understand. I can find work where I want. You, however, CAN'T find smugglers wherever YOU want. I don't NEED you, Badger, YOU need ME. So I suggest that from now on, you and I work on a more civil relationship. Because this isn't going to work out any longer."

Badger: *gulps* I seem to have underestimated you.

Mal: You've underestimated me, my crew, my skill, and my patience for (insert chineese phrase for "irritating bullshit"). I think you should stop. Now.

Wow Static, that is spot on dandy! Very well done. I especially like where Mal says,... " You've underestimated me, my crew, my skill, and MY PATIENCE .. ".

Writing lines like that is an ability that escapes me, but I sure enjoy the hell out of 'em. Like writing song lyrics... I know what I like. Good job!

BLACKEYEDGIRL

I always wanted Inara to go off on some cursing rampage. I wanted an episode where one of her customers attacks her or something, and she heads back to Serenity, suits up in Zoe's clothes, steals Vera from Jayne, kisses Mal, gets in her shuttle and shoots the customer right between the eyes. I guess I just wanted Inara to lose her cool for once.

Okay, here's another. This one started after I watched The Train Job and a Hope/Crosby double feature on the same night.

Let's set the scene: Mal and company are in a bar, on Unification day; Zoe keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop, Jayne keeps muttering "I didn't fight no gorram war, leave me out of it!" Mal, however is frustrated, because the whole bar seems in a good mood, and, despite his best efforts, no one's baiting the browncoats. No excuse for a nice, relaxing punch-up.

Then Hope and Crosby (or reasonable facsimiles) step on stage and begin singing:

Crosby: Take my love, take my land --
Hope: Take my wife--please!

Anger and glee fight each other for space on Mal's face, as he draws his iron--

--only to get cut off at the kneecaps by a sudden chorus of "click-click-click" as hammers are cocked back, shotguns are pumped, and safeties are released. The camera pulls back, revealing that the entire room is filled with former browncoats, all drawing a bead on the hapless entertainers.

With a sigh of disgust, Mal holsters his weapon, downs his drink, and stomps out of the bar.

Hope: You said that line was sure to get a laugh!

Crosby: I don't understand it; it wowed them on Ariel.

Fade to black.

SIGMANUNKI

Scene: Mal and Inara meet on the cat walk in the cargo bay. Mal coming from the kitchen, Inara going to.

Mal smiles at Inara: You didn't just fall and hit your head did you?
Inara blushes: I...
Mal puts his finger to her lips: Shhhhh
Takes finger away and leans in for a kiss.

Just then Book walks in interrupting reading his book.

Inara stutters: Well... I... have to...
Walks past to the kitchen.

Book: Did I interrupt something?
Mal continuing on his way: Not at all.

But, I don't think that Inara would ever really snap in that way. She has shown her self to be quite reserved in the past. If anything it would have to be Mal doing his honour thing again.

BLAZINGBUG

[Niska has laid a trap that drew the crew of Serenity back to his space station. After a vicious battle, they face a Mexican standoff. They have a gun to Niska's head, but he has a deadman's switch connected to a bomb at the bay where Serenity is docked. It seems each side's vengence will have to wait another day.]

INTERIOR - BRIDGE - SPACE
(Niska's Space Station can be seen through bridge window)

MAL (O.S.)
[over intercom]
"Wash, what are you waiting for? I want to get away from that rutting space station as soon as possible."

WASH
"No problem, Mal. I've just got a loose coupling; I'll have it fixed in a minute."

He switches off the intercom, and obviously is not moving to fix anything. His gaze is riveted on the space station.

INTERIOR - NISKA'S OFFICE

NISKA
"It is mistake to let Mr. Reynolds get too close to me... my business. I will let business take care of Mr. Reynolds. I will hire men to kill him for me."

Niska walks behind his desk. The camera stays on his face as he moves.

NISKA [continued]
"There are many men who would do this for Niska. To get Niska's business. And then this stain on Niska's reputation will be..."

Niska looks down at his desk.

"What is this?"

Camera pans down to a plastic dinosaur on Niska's desk. We see Niska's hand reach down to pick up the dinosaur. As he does so, something dark falls from within it onto his desk.

Cut to close-up of Niska's frightened face.

Cut to close-up of grenade on Niska's desk.

INTERIOR - BRIDGE - SPACE
(Niska's Space Station can be seen through bridge window)

Wash is standing on the bridge looking out through the window at the space station.

WASH
(coldly)
"Ha ha. Mine is an evil laugh. Now... die."

Pan from Wash to the space station and zoom in as a silent explosion occurs off one section of it. We see bodies and parts of bodies flying out into space as much as we can show.

MAL (O.S.)
[over intercom]
"Wash, what's the hold up?"

Wash goes back to his seat, flicks some switches, and grabs the wheel as Serenity starts turning away from the space station.

WASH
"All done, Captain."
(quieter)
"Everything's taken care of."

END OF EPISODE

Edit: Had to fix some things that didn't come through. Another fix for what I felt was a better beat to the scene.

WOW!

Nice little view of Wash's dark side!

He probably never really got over the whole torture thing. . .given that he wasn't a vetran (we don't suppose) and didn't have that little "shell" that Mal and Zoe have to protect him. . .he's probably going to harbor anger and resentment for some time.

Thanks to all!

I not only see this as Wash dealing with his torture, but as something he feels he "owes" Mal. I think he knew that if Zoe had a choice, she would choose to save him. But Mal, not only getting him through the torture, but that last look when Wash turns back and says, "Mal?" and Mal shakes his head. That look tells Wash that Mal was choosing to stay in his place.

That's just an amazing thing, and I think this is the kind of thing Wash would do to repay that.

Yes, even so far as to sacrifice one of his dinosaurs.
