Tim Minear - Apr 3, 2004 5:56:32 pm PST #9310 of 9405

Well, not sure what to tell ya'll -- but we're cancelled. Effective at once. The cow creamer will be silent this Thursday and forever forward. Once we recover from the not-shock, Todd, Bryan and I will see if there's some venue in which to air the remaining episodes. As I have said from the start, the thirteen taken as a whole tell a story and go to a place, so a run of this "limited" series would not be unsatisfying elsewhere. It's a question as to whether the studio will want to invest in a DVD release of a failed series. Maybe the episodes will sit in a warehouse someplace with that sled and the arc of the covenant.

Thanks for all the support and enthusiasm.

Tim

My thoughts exactly. I don't think Tim was that surprised though. They should have went for a cable network instead of FUX.

They need to run those 13 on FX sometime soon, even if it is in the middle of the night. I would tape them all.

Here's another post from him in the same thread [there are a few others, but this is the most substantial]

Quote:

Tim, is there anything we can do? I've never participated in a "save our show campaign," but I adore this show and I'll do anything to save it. Who can we write to about this? What should we ask for? This show is excellent and deserves to be shown in full, somehow.

In terms of "saving" the show? Not really anything you can do. The network is a non-starter here. The stuido, 20th, is possibly a different matter. If they get the sense that people would buy a complete series DVD set, it might happen that the series becomes available in future. But please don't waste your time or money on trying to revive "Wonderfalls" for a pick-up with Fox. Ain't gonna happen.

When we first began this series, I was asked by many why I would put my trust in the network that mishandled "Firefly" so terribly. Well, because it felt different to me. Initially, there was real excitement and belief in "Wonderfalls" at the network. My feeling with "Fireflit couldn't launch it or sell it with any measure of success.

And again, "Wonderfalls" felt totally different to me. At first. Then, at some point in the process, I could sense an erosion in enthusiasm. Even as we were finding our footing and delivering to them some really exceptional episodes (ones you never got to see!), things got chilly. Then they couldn't seem to find any place on the schedule for us. Then they did... and it was Friday night. I tell you now, the moment that was announced, I knew it was over. They were dumping us into Friday nights and that was that. When the smashing reviews started coming in... and coming and coming and coming... I think they didn't know what to think or do. You have but one chance to make a good first impression. But they'd given up on the show before it ever aired, and even when the lion's share of critics were hailing the show, it was too late for them to backtrack and launch the series with any kind of conviction. My "Firefly" experience was repeating itself. I think it was USA Today that said this may be "the wrong show, in the wrong season, on the wrong night, on the wrong network." Just so. I do think market forces were at work here, too. Not just incompetence.

I don't know if any network could have brought an audience to this show. Certainly no network that dumped it on Friday night, promoted it in such as way as to try and trick people into thinking it was "Dawson's Creek," or that didn't, apparantly, agree with the things the critics were saying about it. I do think any network wants whatever they pay for to be a success. I don't think they MEAN to strangle something in the crib. I know that the next time I shop something to a network, I'm going to hope to find a network that understands and believes in the thing they ordered. And if they thought it looked good on the menu, I'd hope they'd still have a taste for it once it got to the table.

There's a whole 'nother half of this post... but I deleted it.

Twice burned, me.

FOX just doesn't give unusual shows the time they need to grow. All of this carnage will inevitably lead to shows finding other ways to reach their audiences. When networks plow under their new crops before they have a chance to grow, all we'll be left with is dirt.

Enter "The Swan".

Now, besides stating the obvious (this really sucks), I am really going to miss Jaye (and more specifically, the actress of the ridiculously complicated name that I can't even begin to pronounce, let alone spell), cause, well, Jaye was/is/was the most unique female character on television. And really hot. That too. Hot. Yes. That. And no William Sadler. Television is not television without William Sadler appearing on it in some way, shape, or form.

Let's face it, Fox did everything it could possible do to get this show out there (they put it on TV didn't they?!?) and it tanked. Let's pick up the pieces and shove em up our nose and in our ears so maybe, just maybe, it'll cause enough brain damange to make us enjoy all the fine programming Fox offers ("Oooh hey, the OC!")

I have not posted in quite some time but I had to on this one.

How do you place a show on Fridays, show 3 episodes, move it to Thursday for one, then cancel it?

Wow, I love Firefly but Wonderfalls got screwed even harder. Why?

What did Joss, Tim, or any of their people do to piss fox off so much? It is almost like fox has a vendetta against anyone involved with Whedon. They figured they would get him, now Tim, sign them to contracts then screw them.

Think about it. You are a tv exec and you hate someone. Sign them to a deal for an awesome show and kill it. You try to get their best work that you can and bury it. They can not take it elsewhere now without your consent. You also know that this will not show up against any of your reality crap to take viewers.

Mercifuly they let Universal have the rights to a Firefly movie, but you can bet they either made a ton of money or kept all the merchandising rights so they could cash in.

You are making a very common mistake. The Fox that you are cursing is not the one that let Universal have anything. FOX Television Network Cancelled the show that 20th Century Fox Television Studios made and 20th Century Fox Home Video released on DVD. These are different companies of the same umbrella company.

As Tim said:
Quote:

The 20th he is referring to is 'Fox'. This means that if you want a DVD set of Wonderfalls, you have to ask the company that made Buffy, Angel, The Practice, Judging Amy, Roswell, and Yes, Dear--of of which never aired on the Fox Television Network.

And if 20th Century Fox Television made any money off the deal with Universal, or from merchandising then good for them. The people that decided to cancel it will not see a penny of it since its a different company. Its not like ABC makes money from the Charlie's Angels movies (as far as I know).

Feh. I should've known. I thought Wonderfalls was different for Fox. Yeah, they put it in the same Timeslot-o-Death, and the promos they put together for it were pretty crappy. That part was déjà vu all over again.

But they actually aired the promos! And the promos themselves weren't quite as terrible as Firefly's promos! And they showed it in the order intended! And re-aired the pilot on a better night! And when it did better on that night, they actually tried moving the show itself to that better night! Yeah, some people missed it because they didn't realize it got moved, but it was a step in the right direction.

Feh.

Actually, the "next episode" promos were pretty decent......for someone who's seen the show. I imagine they wouldn't have been as good to those who hadn't. The pre-premier promos certainly weren't exactly grabby.

Seems to me we need specific names at Fox TV, names of those who are specifically responsible for this cancellation/Friday-viewing horse crap. It does little good to curse the bastards without being able to point directly at those involved, seems to me.

I have long suspected an agenda, or personal vendetta, against Joss and Mutant Enemy and have said so on this forum, formerly to deaf ears.

Mr. Minear, if you are reading this and have read what was written earlier about leaving Fox, please don't. Instead, think of the worst concept possible and then write the worst pilot you are capable of and then send it to them. More likely than not, they will love it and it will be a big success.

Hopefully, the concept will be about Monkeys in Space.

I hate FOX! Honestly, how can they do that?! First hold back the show for a midseason replacement, allowing Joan of Arcadia to seem all original, then misadvertise the show, then put it in the Timeslot of Death (tm), then switch it to Thursday and not ever give it a chance to grap onto the new time slot.

They even produced 13 whole episodes of it. The TV season is almost over anyway, why not air the rest and see it if catches on instead of throwing the it in the trash?
Gorram it! Baka! Tawake! Noutarin! Shiri-nuke-me!

I am actually sitting here with a lump in my throat and almost crying. Yeah, it's "just" a tv show, but hell, what a show it was.

I just don't understand what the hell network people are thinking. This stuff just floors me. Why spend the money? Why invest in anything? Why don't all of their shows represent whatever bullshit makes them money? Why is there anything that involves writers? Why is there a Sci-Fi channel? It should be the Bullshit Reality Show Channel. Why is there Spike? It should be Bullshit Reality Show II. Why do they have. MTV 2 and VH1? THey should be Bullshit Reality Show III. Don't get me started on PAX, WGN and all the rest of the networks that should be Bullshit Reality Show Network Affiliates. Fox, go ahead and cancel Wonderfalls. Go ahead and let the Simpsons actors walk out. You're Bullshit Reality Show Network Prime and you just haven't changed your name.

RUXTON

Once again, I suggest the actors & crew sue Fox TV for failing to present a show properly. Does anyone know if there's a clause in the typical contract that prevents this? Could not a class-action lawsuit, possibly involving the viewers as well, override any such clauses?

Also, how come all you folks who promised to never watch Fox after they screwed up Firefly are STILL watching it? Didn't you learn the first time? Yes, I was tempted to sign up for Wonderfalls from the comments here, but...it was on Fox.

Someone noted on this thread that actions like this by Fox will cause a major change in the way TV shows are produced and presented in the future. Nielson ratings seem to be worthless. There IS a market for quality TV. Does anyone really prefer "The Help" to "Firefly"?

Only by revolt (class-action lawsuit) will any changes be made. Anyone else angry?

I was expecting Wonderfall's to be cancelled from the start but I'd really hoped that they would have showed more than 4 episodes. I'm hoping they'll show the remaining 9 episodes on FX or some other cable network because at this point while I enjoyed the show I didn't enjoy it enough to buy the DVD's. I won't be boycotting Fox as I don't have a nielsen ratings box so it won't make any difference but the only show I watch on Fox is 24 anyway.

BADGERSHAT

So, once again, we see that the FOX execs are incapable of seeing the ACTUAL reality out there. They pile "reality TV" on us by the pitchforkful, but haven't the slightest clue what people want to see happen. They take a brilliant show like Firefly and doom it to death in the same approximate conditions that killed Star Trek 30 some-odd years ago. I never watched Wonderfall, but I've heard nothing but HIGH praise for it. And so, naturally, FOX dooms it to death in the proven kill zone on Friday nights.

In the words of Jayne, "It don't make no sense..."

Folks, I think I'm done with them. I know I'm not alone.

Here's my idea.

Never mind writing to save a show, never mind writing to get a show onto DVD.

Let's all buy a post card, and each of us get 10 other people (or more if you can!), and we all simply write "I solemnly vow never to watch the FOX network or any FOX affiliates again."

No ultimatums, so begging, no suggestions, no asking to bring something back, no conditions, no cojoling to make changes.

We're done. End of it all. Never to watch their network again, nothing they can do will change it (unless they pretty much fire EVERYBODy and bring in a whole new team of execs and writers and producers and designers and who the FK am I kidding?)

This is a call to arms.

I have a theory about Fox TV Network. As many people know, they tend to be very... politically conservative. Right Wing. Bordering on Facists. They make Ronald Reagan look like the Women's Lib President. OK, so I've showed my hand here. I'm sorry if I offend anyone who isn't as obviously bleeding-heart as I am. I have no bone to pick with most conservative individuals-- just the ones who make me look like a centrist by comparison. (Believe me, I'm no centrist!)

Tim-and-Joss tend to make very creative, out-there (dare I characterize it as left-wing?) kind of stuff. I have thought all along, first with Firefly and now with Wonderfalls (this really cements it for me) that the feeling among Fox TV Execs is that good TV with any kind of a liberal bias is dangerous to the Fox TV Machine, which is dedicated to taking us back to a simpler time when men were men and women couldn't wear pants in public.

I think this was completely political. I think the good reviews garnered by Wonderfalls only *increased the speed* with which Fox pulled the plug, because they increased the chances it might get watched by somebody. Fox doesn't want any show to air, anywhere, that might make liberals or lesbians or companions or independent people look good or feel good about themselves. So they buy up first-rate, cutting edge ideas, gain legal control over the material, and sabotage it so it can never hope to be successful, so it can never be aired by anybody else, so it can never compete with their cheap programming crap or cause the world to open up and be a little less fearful of People Who Are Different.

Or, as I put it when I sent the bad news to my mom, FOX SUCKS!!!!!

There is no such thing as a weed.

Unless it's a good show trying to grow on Fox, that is.
