So, here's the deal. I'm drivng in my car and listening to the radio, and a shiny new song by Liz Phair comes on, and it made me think of Firefly. The song's title is "Extraordinary" and the lyrics fit River so well, it almost seemed like the song was written about her.

Just wondering if anyone has heard this song, and if any other songs make you think of a particular character on Serenity.

BTW: It was pure luck I was listening to the radio, as I usually have my iPod in the car, and reciently have been using it to listen to a collention of music and quotes collented from Firefly.

Yup. I posted this over in another thread as well, but I always kind of imagined the lyrics to Evanescence's "My Immortal" as a duet between Simon and River.

RIVER
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

SIMON
[CHORUS:]
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

You used to captivate me
By your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind

RIVER
Your face it haunts
My once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away
All the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

SIMON
[CHORUS:]

RIVER
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along

SIMON
[CHORUS:]

BOTH TOGETHER
But you still have
all of me.

Simon's singing to her, but River is singing to him and to the Blue Hands.

"Sir, I would like to gingerly point out that it is difficult for someone to be gently reassuring when they're holding three and a half feet of sharpened steel."

But that song is about death. "The immortal" she refers to is someone she loved who died. They're immortal because she can't forget them and doesn't feel like they're really gone. I'm not so sure a death song is right for Simon and River.

"Dear diary, today I was pompous and my sister was crazy."

I had this CD in my truck the other day, and thought that this song was perfect for Inara- Then, I forgot about this post, leading to today, when I hit my CD player and heard the song again and remembered- It's Natalie Merchant's "My Skin", from the Ophelia CD-

Quote:

NATALIE MERCHANT

My Skin

Take a look at my body
Look at my hands
There's so much here that I don't understand
Your face-saving promises
Whispered like prayers
I don't need them
'Cause I've been treated so wrong,
I've been treated so long
As if I'm becoming untouchable
Well, contempt loves the silence, it thrives in the dark
With fine winding tendrils that strangle the heart
They say that promises sweeten the blow
But I don't need them, no I don't need them
I've been treated so wrong,
I've been treated so long
As if I'm becoming untouchable
I'm a slow-dying flower
In the frost-killing hour
Sweet turning sour and untouchable
I need the darkness, the sweetness, the sadness, the weakness
Oh I need this
I need a lullaby, a kiss goodnight, angel, sweet love of my life
Oh I need this
I'm a slow-dying flower
Frost-killing hour
The sweet turning sour and untouchable
Do you remember the way that you touched me before
All the trembling sweetness I loved and adored
Your face-saving promises
Whispered liked prayers
I don't need them
I need the darkness, the sweetness, the sadness, the weakness
Oh, I need this
I need a lullaby, a kiss goodnight, angel, sweet love of my life
Oh, I need this
Well is it dark enough
Can you see me
Do you want me
Can you reach me
Oh, I'm leaving
Better shut your mouth, and hold your breath
You kiss me now, you catch your death
Oh, I mean this
Oh, I mean this

When I heard it, I kept thinking of Inara and Mal, and the fact that she might be dying- Just my 2cents-
