I was wondering when they start filming, How do you get to be an extra. I would be willing to trek where ever just to get a chance to be in this movie. I think it would be great it they gave us fans a chance. Would anyone else be willing?

While I'm not in the industry per se, I do have a rudimentary knowledge of the film business, and as far as I know extras are cast through notices in trade magazines. There's usually handled as a "cattle-call" type audition wherein the Casting Director or the equivalent picks the people who look right. So if you're serious about trying to get in as an extra on Serenity then I would imagine the best way to do so is to either try and check with the production company, or scan industry trade announcements for an extra casting call for the film.

It's pretty much guaranteed that the casting call will take place in L.A. as the movie is being filmed there, so if you're serious about giving yourselves a chance, you'll probably need to travel there if you find out when the casting call is.

One note: It's possible that there may be another way in, if the producers of the film decide they want to include some fans in the background as a gesture of goodwill. However, if this is the case, I wouldn't expect to be a "featured extra" (e.g. one who receives a pretty clear shot on screen). Those types are carefully chosen as far as looks to keep the visual style of the movie uniform. But they might decide to be nice and sneak some fans way in the back of a crowd scene or something.

Now that I am done being a Know-It-All, any people who do have intimate knowledge of the industry, please feel free to correct any inaccuracies here. I'll take no offense, and be happy to learn something new.

Another option may be through an agency. Extras (now often referred to as "Background Performers" since in some very bizarre way some people started considering the term "extras" degrading ) are sometimes cast through "cattle calls", but are often cast through an agency. Once a Serenity production office is set-up you could phone to inquire about what agency is being used for background casting and then contact the agency. No guarantee they'll take you on though, especially if you're only trying to do one film.
