I hate dieting, so I try to never tell myself that I am dieting.

Instead, I've been cutting down on meat (I had half a steak last night, but only because it was my birthday). Two slices of thin-sliced chicken lunch meat today with my lunch, and that was all the meat for the day. Two slices of chicken, a slice of low-fat Swiss cheese on rye bread, a fruit salad (organic strawberries, blueberries, and cherries), some carrots and celery sticks, a half a tomato, and some fresh pineapple - that was lunch and breakfast today. Dinner was an egg-white omelet with fresh salsa and another fruit salad (pear, nectarine, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, banana) and seven-grain toast with organic strawberry preserves and OJ to drink.

So I'm far from starving, but not piling in a whole bunch of empty calories.

I'm eating much healthier than I was a few years ago; now I need to start cutting down on the portions.

Oh, and I've signed on for an 8.5-mile ride this Friday (I'm off on Fridays now, doing 4 10-hour shifts and having a 3-day weekend. Yay!), followed by a 10.2-mile ride on Saturday. I'm hoping to mix in at least a 5-miler on Sunday as well, just to decompress a bit!

By the end of the month, I want to be doing at least 15 miles each Saturday. From there, the plan is 20-mile rides by end of September, 25 by end of October, 30 by Thanksgiving (gotta ride off that turkey dinner!), and 35 by end of the year. That gets me to my goal, and on the way to a better road bike! :)


ETA: This morning's 8.5 mile ride turned out to be a bit more, at 10.85 miles. I added a little extra loop to it, because I was just feeling like it. :)

And today's planned ride turned out to be quite a bit LESS than I'd hoped, due to a huge amount of foot traffic on the trail this morning. I spent more time braking for walkers and joggers than I did accelerating, it seemed. :( 4.95 miles, but it felt so much longer...

Tomorrow morning, I'm hitting the trail at 6am to try to beat the crowds. And I'm *hoping* I can get my riding partner to go for 10 miles at least, or I may have to just start riding on my own...


ETA: Today's ride turned out to be SHORTER than expected, and it was all my fault. Hit a rock just wrong and pinched the front tube, and lost all the air from the front tire. Had to walk it a couple miles back to the car, which gave me blisters, because my riding shoes are NOT walking shoes! :(

Ah, well... such is life. I still got a decent ride out of the deal. And a pretty nice walk, too! :)

portion size is the most important aspect of nutrition and "dieting". that's what i need to work on and i'm pretty sure that was the difference in the food i consumed abroad vs. here.

i walked 3 miles on thursday, 6 miles on friday, biked 3 miles yesterday and will be walking 3 miles today.

sadly no more biking for me. in a few moments i will be packing up my bicycle into a box so i can ship it to my new house.

Don't eat any meals during the last 4 hours before you go to bed. Acceptable food during this time (if you are actually hungry):
Any potato product that isn't fried (no chips).
popcorn
any fruit.
Any Vegetable.
Soups, not cheezy ones.

When you wake up hungry, eat plenty breakfast.

Whew... Big ride today (for me, at least). Bigger than intended, anyway.

Took a wrong turn or, rather, neglected to take a left turn where I should have, and inadvertently added almost seven miles to my morning. Turned out to be 16.64 miles. Yesterday was 11.6, which felt pretty darned good. Today's miles didn't feel very good. I didn't sleep worth a damn, but wanted to get a ride in anyway, so pushed it and got a bit lost.

But I'm glad I hit my goal of 15 miles by the end of August. :) That puts me solidly on target for my goals.

Way to go, Kwicko, even if it was accidental! LOL We usually do 12 miles three times a week, and about 30 miles once a week. I've done 34.6 miles, and I have been looking to do 40 miles, but the weather has gone south (as in monsoon).

I haven't been on my bike in two and a half weeks and I started having withdrawals two weeks ago. *twitches* I have trouble with the humidity. 85-90F with a 65F dew point at sunrise is not good when the last half mile is always up a steep hill (no breeze). Twice I've had tunnel vision with a racing heart and had to take a break. Kinda scary, but a short break does the trick and my heart rate comes right back down, no problems. We'll take ten degrees more (daytime high) heat with ten degrees less dew point, thank you very much!

The good news is that the weight has stayed off so far, and cooler/drier mornings are coming very soon.

Thanks, Karel! Funny part is, I started off on a route that would have been just a tick over 15.2 miles. By getting lost, I ended up cutting short the back half of the ride, and I was feeling REALLY dejected and defeated coming home, but when I mapped it out, I found that I had EXCEEDED my goal for the day.

I've been working on a six-mile loop and an eight-mile loop the last couple weeks, and throwing in some changes and upping things at least once a week to ten miles or better. My wife's still doing the six-mile loop, but she's doing it consistently, and getting faster at it.

I'm DREAMING of doing the 35-milers. I'll get one under my belt by year's end, I'm confident. It doesn't mean I'll do 'em every weekend, but it means I *can* do 'em, and at that point 20-milers will be a breeze.

The last few days have been perfect here in the mornings. 68º, low humidity - a far cry from the 85º mornings and 85% humidity we've had the last few weeks! Today's high was 96º, and I gotta say, it felt GREAT. There's a world of difference between 96 and 107, and it's even greater when the humidity is lower along with the temps.

I stupidly went out last weekend and did a 10-miler at 3 in the afternoon, purely out of frustration (I rode earlier in the day, but got a flat - my fourth in four rides!). It was 104 at the time, and I thought I might die. :)

Y'know, I kinda find myself wishing we had a Firefly Fit Club board, just so I wouldn't have to keep tracking this thread down to update it... :)

Anyway, a sweet little 12.75-mile cruise this morning, in just under an hour. Quite a few hills, but finished off with some very fast flats along Slaughter Lane - about 4 miles of running in the top two or three gears!

Zoiks! Haven't posted here in a while, but rest assured, I've been keeping at it with the bike. I've hit all my monthly goals thus far - I did a 15-mile ride for August, and did a 20-miler last weekend. It's cooled down enough now that I'm riding every evening during the week, doing a 5-mile loop in my neighborhood, working on getting my average speed up. 5 miles is taking me 20 to 25 minutes, which is a decent jump from my average a month ago of around 10mph. The speed radar unit on one of my routes I hit the first time at 12mph; last weekend I made it read 25mph, so that felt awesome.

On my weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) the shortest ride I'll do now is in the 15 mile range, and I've chosen a route that takes me up lots of hills, and then generally down at about the halfway point, so the last half goes much faster than the first half. I'll usually finish off with a lap or two of the Circle C Veloway in southwest Austin (it's a 3.17 mile paved loop in the woods that is off-limits to everyone EXCEPT bicyclists and rollerbladers).

This weekend, I plan to do a 15, a 20, and a 15, for a total of 50 miles in one weekend. By end of October, I'm set on doing a 25-miler, then 30 by Thanksgiving and 35 by New Year's. And now I know with 100% certainty that I can definitely do this. Before, I wasn't sure if I'd bitten off more than I could chew!

Oh, and I've dropped ten pounds, and my calves are huge. :) And, oddly, my upper arms are getting much larger. And I can see actual honest-to-goodness ABS trying to show!
