I take it that Microsoft is still around, and perhaps never updated their operating system. This screencap from the episode Trash (found around 23:15 into the episode, but seen at other times as well - this was the clearest frame) shows what looks to be Windows XP.

oh my.. maybe that means: in the future windows will only be good enough to operate trash containers. though the window frame doesnt look xp and the background color isnt 9x, so i guess 2000 would be a good bet (after all, trash containers sure dont have tons of memory to waste).

hmm.. and how did the alliance win? obviously there ships werent crashing into plans, flying into suns or shooting down each other rather than the enemy. except of course they had truly superior numbers ,-)

seriously, i just noticed i prefer a real os in a scifi show over those ridiculous "movie os" appearances in present movies (the ones with "deleting files" all over the screen, no visible interface and requiring people to just mindlessly hack away at the keyboard to do something).

besides that, ms is just sooo alliance anyway and seeing it on a trash container is somewhat satisfying even if probably not intended ,-)

The answer's simple.

Computer technology HAS advanced a lot, of course. We see that in Inara's easy use of the Hub for communications etc.

However, when the automated trash containers were developed, the inventors simply did a search on the archives preserved from Earth-That-Was.

Search criteria - Rubbish Operating System.

Thousands of hits came up, all refering to Microsoft.

All they had to do was select the one which operated the most rubbish - and the problem was solved.

Not ONLY is it Win2000. . .

But it appears to be running a 'setup wizard' of some sort. . .probably 'new hardware detected'.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

It would be truly sad if 500 years in the future we are still using Windows. That system is a piece of rubbish now, I can only imagine how bad it would be 500 yrs from now.

On the other hand, the scenes we have caught of Inara using the Cortex to send waves seems to be a fairly advanced system. I like the touch screen to operate it and check messages.

Does explain how it was so easy to hack in. (Sorry, couldn't resist--LOL). That would be the mod chip.

guess ill have to watch it again. would be a pretty nice gag if its really a new hardware wizard (if im not mistaken before jayne removes that board the screen is just showing a big 4). of course it could be pure coincidence and nobody noticed that windows decided showing something else but a big 4 would be much more interesting.

There's a picture in the Blue Sun Room.

It brings a whole new meaning to "piece of Alliance crap" though...
