I am a new forum member and was not sure where to post this, so if it is posted in the wrong place, admins, please feel free to move it.

I wrote an extended firefly theme song, a sort of ballad to the tune of the theme, and I am interested in your feedback and thoughts on it.

The other night after I saw the first episode of Firefly for the nth time, I thought about how I would really like there to be an extended version of the theme song, so I wrote one. The ending transitions into the original theme song lyrics by Joss Whedon et al.

My approach is that the original theme lyrics describe Mal's viewpoint, and so I made a ballad using the same style and rhyme scheme that develops Mal's backstory and shows a possible way that he got to the place he has come to. I didn't have a name for it, I'll just make one up right now:

The Ballad of Captain Reynolds

Oh my love, take my hand,

Come with me to a new land

Burnin sand and boilin sea

A place at last where we can be

Livin with Serenity.

Fireflies light up the black.

We left one, ain't goin back.

Toilin til our spirits fail

As their floatin prisons sail.

Days are hard but finally

we make a life where we are free

To find our way, to make it right,

To make our way out of their night.

Their prison's gone in to the black,

Pray the thieves ain't comin back.

Oh my love, hold my hand,

Live with me in our new land

Burnin sand and boilin sea

Livin where we longed to be

We have found Serenity.

Trouble steals into our room

Thieves that cast a wicked gloom.

Prisons sail across the black.

Oh my love, they're comin back

To thieve the one thing that we own,

To crush and burn our sovereign home-

To make us yield before their hand,

To make a prison of our land.

I’ll not stand their prison bars,

Though prisons float among the stars.

Lost my love, lost my land

Ashes fallin from my hand

Burning up the sand and sea

Prison thieves won't let it be

War be on Serenity;

War took our Serenity.

If there can be no end of night,

I'll make a freedom far from light.

I'll keep a fire, a secret spark

To fly my own way through the dark.

Take my love, take my land

Take me where I cannot stand

I don't care, I'm still free

You can't take the sky from me

Take me out to the black

Tell them I ain't comin' back

Burn the land and boil the sea

You can't take the sky from me

There's no place I can be

Since I found Serenity

But you can't take the sky from me...

I think you did a great job here! Finally, more. I always thought there should've been an extended version of the song, and you definitely did the idea justice.

Thanks so much for your response! I did my best and I'm glad someone else was longing for an extended version of the theme song.

I wish I could do more with it - If I had the musical skill, I would actually sing and play a version and post that. I have this idea, for example, of another, original, violin solo break in the ballad at one point (right before "trouble steals into our room," to make it more interesting.

Welcome to the boat. Grab a brownish coat.

Would like to hear your version recorded , it would be interesting.

Have you heard Vixy's (Michelle Dockrey) Mal's Song ?

Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, I'd like to hear it recorded also- If anyone wants to take a stab at it, I'd love to hear the result.

And maybe sometime I will find some time to try to record a vocal (or overlay multiple vocals) myself; I can play guitar marginally, and I have an inexpensive samsung keyboard; I see the tablature to the theme doesn't seem bad... If I had enough time on my hands I could probably work something up.

Thanks for posting Mal's song; I like it, it's very good quality. It is sort of like it is vignettes from the series, and what I wrote is more focused on possible events before the series. They make good counterpoints to one another. And someone did a great job editing the video together to the song as well!
