PARANOYD

Hi everyone (first post).

I can't believe I just discovered this series! Decided to browse through my Netflix queue and this one looked interesting. Four sleepless days later I finish all of the episodes and the movie... now I feel like there's an empty void in my life. :(

I wasn't a huge fan of Buffy (the movie) and therefor never had an interest in the series. I sort of remember this being in FOX years ago but it wasn't promoted as anything I'd have an interest in watching... so I didn't.

I wouldn't object if someone felt like firebombing that network, really. The second time in a decade they screwed me out of a good TV show for the same messed up reasons. The first was The Tick, back in the mid-90's. They aired it as a Saturday morning cartoon for kids, problem is, it was geared towards teenagers/the early 20 crowd. Now they do the same kind of asinine move with this series and end up getting both cancelled.

I was a bit disappointed in Serentiy (the movie). They killed off my two favorite characters! I was really hoping they'd go into a lot more of Book's history and Wash... he was the comic relief... they killed the comic relief!! I guess it was a good way to tie up the loose ends given the 2 hour time frame they had. Just wish he had been able to finish all 7 seasons!

---

And yes, Firefly and The Tick aren't exactly strangers to one another. Ben Edlund was the creator of The Tick and also helped out with Firefly.

Hey there. Yeah, it's all pretty ridiculous. There's a few people here who might argue Fox did at least have some justification because the series just wasn't getting the numbers, and that they may have been the only network willing to put it on at all. But then you get back and forth over how it was put in a Friday night death slot and how it wasn't promoted at all.

Either way, it just didn't get the time it should have. Word is that the execs at Fox at the time weren't very Sci-Fi friendly, they thought only something like the X-files was a successful sci-fi format, because that's what they continually were asking Joss for. They were more interested in reality television because at the time, that was the big moneymaker.

But anyway, that's all in the past. There's still new Firefly and Serenity stuff coming out now and then in various formats. You have three comics books, Better Days, Those Left Behind, and post-movie Float Out. Another comic book about Book's backstory (presumably) comes out in November called The Shepherd's Tale. And then an official webcomic by Dark Horse Comics called The Other Half. There's the RPG resources and official merchandise from QMx like the maps and atlases of the verse, plenty of stuff to fill in the void and start making your own stories in the setting, if you're so inclined (plenty of fanfic round here). There's visual companions discussing the production behind the series and film, and a new one, called Still Flying, that has some short stories.

And there's always, always rumours...

Welcome, Paranoyd!

I just signed up for netflix myself, and was pleasantly surprised to see both Serenity and Firefly prominently displayed on the instant view lists.

I'm glad you found us!

Oh how I miss the Tick. Not as much as I miss what could have been in Firefly, but I really miss the Tick...I may cry. two voids=too much...and I have to wait a year for new Castle...I may really freak out...or take up knitting again...WO! freaky much! reminiscing about the Tick made me remember the fact that I dislocated my hip once while knitting and watching Firefly.

The Tick had a lot of great one-liners or "Tickisms" as we came to know them. I miss that show :)

The best part were the small on-going details like CHA or the bite being taken out of the moon LOL.

Was also tempted to name one of my dogs Speak...

I found Firefly had a lot of that same subtle kind of humor mixed with the very blunt humor - kicking the guy into the engine for instance and then referring back to it in a later episode.

I saw some reviews criticize the shift from "space show" to "western" but really didn't find it that bad or unbelievable. I mean, just trade a horse for a Tauntaun and you have Star Wars, only more realistic.

Space ships didn't "fly" through space, sound didn't travel through a vacuum, fire needed oxygen to breathe and lasers weren't available in every corner of the planet.

Welcome to the party, dude - and you ain't the only FF Fan who's also a large fan of The Tick.
SPOOOOOOOOON!

Although admittedly it was EMBWBM (Embie!) who made that show for me, you just had to love that guy in a Villain-Classic kinda way.
