Three years in the making, Dark Horse announced Serenity: Shepherd's Tale, 56 pages, $14.99, in stores on November 24, 2010. An original hardcover graphic novel co-written by series creator Joss Whedon and his brother, Terminator and Dr. Horrible writer Zack Whedon, and illustrated by Chris Samnee, The Shepherd's Tale will reveal the intricate backstory of Derrial "Shepherd" Book, the soft-spoken preacher with a dark past. The publisher has also announced a "Serenity" one-shot by Patton Oswalt and Patric Reynolds, which is expected to ship in June 2010.

I eagerly await this story and shudder at the same time. From what I've gathered, Book will be a dirty cop and not a former operative as he should be.

The story is served so well if he is a former operative who worked for the Parliment during the Unification War. But alas, when pressed for info about Book, Ron (who himself knew nothing) finally asked Joss to tell him what to tell fans at cons, and Joss said "Tell them that Book was a dirty cop".

So here we are. I can write a volume supporting why Book is an operative. As I said, I eagerly await this story and shudder at the same time.

No offense, but Book being an Operative is kinda boring and obvious. I would hope the House of Whedon would come up with something a little more interesting.

They probably just tossed out the dirty cop thing to throw people off. By the sound of it, Operatives sometimes get involved in pretty shady works.

All wrong, Book was a former Alliance Companion:)

He was tracking the Tams; Inara was his contact on Serenity.

They were planning on bringing Mal in too, high profile Browncoat, that he is.

It was to be Inara’s last mission before she died.

Book’s not dead, neither is Wash, they’re clones.

Pregnant clones;)
