Het guys, I'm new to fireflyfans but have been a dedicated browncoat since 2003. (i know i was a little late to help the show while it was on the air but what can you do? i NEVER watch network tv) anyway, i wanted to see if there is any possibility that anyone will still pick up the show to create a new seasn or even a new movie. hoping there is some news out there on weather anything is or can be done. thanks guys, hope that we can make something happen to keep the best show ever running and alive

The tiniest glimmer of hope is that Fox apparently losses their TV rights in 2012. So, maybe someone will take the bait then.

However, the realist in me says it's over. I don't see Nathan or Adam giving up their current roles to come back to Firefly right now. Castle is doing decently well. Why move over to a proven loser?

Chuck has a good chance of being cancelled by 2012 I guess. However, if it's not I still don't see why an actor would choose to leave a stable job for one on shaky footing.

I say enjoy what we've got and hope Joss comes along with something new and awesome.

'Cause it's the LOVE that keeps 'er in the air...

BTW , Firefly has NEVER been a 'proven loser'.

Even when it was on network , it was paying its own way with ad revenue . Subsequently , it made about a bazillion simoleons with DVD boxset sales...

Proven loser ?

F-network , for prematurely killing its own , over and over again !

We're still ahead of the Star Trek curve , and Firefly is too good an idea to just crawl away and die...

Long as there are Folk with hearts of stardust , and we are still drawing breath , there will always be a place in the 'Verse for more Firefly , one way or the t'other...

Actually, it is. You see, making money is moot if the money isn't enough. And Firefly wasn't exactly a cash cow, similarly for the movie. It's also failed to get a large solid fan base. What we really have is mediocre, at best, profits and a very (relatively speaking) fan base. Then there's the nasty little fact that the powers that be aren't exactly inclined to back it.

In short, proven loser. Sure is.

And that love thing, it doesn't even enter the equation. You don't bet your career on love.

I seem to recall Fox had to actually refund money to the sponsors because the ratings were so low. If that's not a loser then I don't know what is. I really don't know the numbers as to whether Fox still came out ahead on the show from just the ad revenue. I'm guessing by now the DVD sets have made them a decent amount of money.

Still the ratings were poor and the movie just barely squeaked into profitability with DVD sales from what I've heard.

That isn't very encouraging for potential investors. Especially considering sequels tend to make less than the originals from what I hear.

Great post! I agree with everything you wrote. I'm offended by any description of Firefly involving the word "loser". There's plenty of blame to go around, but none of that blame can be directed at Joss, or the crew, or the actors. If Fox lost money on it...good for them...they frikkin' deserve it, 'cause all they ever did was abort the thing before it took its' first breath. Movie studio didn't make an Avataresque killing on it? So sorry! Maybe next time do some better audience research to come up with a more exciting or newbie-attracting title for the movie, and maybe promote it a little more enthusiastically, if making money is your goal that is. Firefly still lives on in comics, here at FFF, and with BDH appearances at sci-fic cons all over the country.

Well at least you can relate to the studios not giving a flying @#$% about what you want. Cause you sure don't give a flying @#$% about what they want.

Why wouldn't Joss deserve some of the blame? He handed Fox a show that was incredibly difficult to market. To this day I don't know how to succinctly describe Firefly to someone who has no idea what it is. It's also clearly not the show the network wanted. If Joss had done his research and compromised then maybe he'd still have a show to this day. I don't see how he comes out scott free.

As for the movie I'm pretty sure Joss came up with the title Serenity. I also saw plenty of commercials for the movie when it was in theaters. They were actually really good at showing off the witty dialog and some of the action. I think Universal did a great job with Serenity. I have no ill will toward them.

Good thing we have fans that celebrate networks and studios not making money on their investment. It's always fun to have extra roadblocks to ever seeing more Firefly/Serenity.

COMPROMISED!!!!!!!! How was coming up with "The Train Job" as a rushed together alternative pilot not a compromise??? If he hadn't done that we wouldn't have one single second of this show to enjoy. It wouldn't have even been aired.

Another episode of a show the network didn't want? Not much of a compromise.

It's like having an argument with your wife about sitting around watching football all day and thinking that watching different teams is a compromise. It's completely missing the point.

Does Joss Whedon want to be the existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre or Albert Camus? Which one? Joss ignited a stink-bomb smelling of mortality when he had a funeral at the end of Serenity. Whatever arty-farty thing Joss was thinking, a funeral always kills the buzz for popcorn movies. Compare ticket sales for three movies that had girl powered bloodbaths: Kick-Ass & Kill Bill, which had no funeral and no mopping up the blood, and Serenity.

Serenity Worldwide: $38,869,464 ; Production Budget: $39 million www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=serenity.htm
Kill Bill Worldwide: $180,949,045 ; Production Budget: $30 million www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=killbill.htm
Kick-Ass Worldwide: $73,000,000 + ; Production Budget: $30 million www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=kickass.htm
If you want smart analysis of the violent girl in Kick-Ass, read What's the Problem With Hit-Girl? www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/moviebob/7464-Whats-the
-Problem-With-Hit-Girl.2

Fictional characters dying is okay in a popcorn movie. Reminders that you in the audience will die are not okay -- funerals hurt ticket sales. Universal Studios should have told Joss to move that scene into an exclusive extra on the DVD. Dread and death charged with life, commitment and decision, make for a great movie but Joss ought to skip the funeral scene in his next movie. I want less existential dread, and more butter, poured on my popcorn movies!

I don't believe this thread!!!! It started off with a guy joining the browncoat family, and instead of welcoming him in with open arms, you have ended up pissing on his fireworks by telling him what a waste of fucking time Firefly is. Shame on you all!!!! Oh how the mighty fall when the sun stops shining.Fair weather fans, and no place here.

You are misunderstanding. Have you ever listened to Joss Whedon's commentary on Objects In Space? Joss has some intellectual pretensions, which is a very fine thing in a writer. But because 3 /4 of his potential audience (not yet actual audience) are rabid anti-intellectuals, whenever he over indulgences himself with more than a taste of philosophy, he drives those anti-intellectuals away. That reduces his ticket sales. If Joss wants to be the Conqueror of the Universe, he needs to dumb it down a notch. He will then make bushel baskets of money. And we will get another Firefly movie.

[See Kick-Ass for a movie that dumb down too much. It still made money. When stupid goes far too far: The Losers (2010). A movie that does dumb just right is Kill Bill, which was a girl powered bloodbath, like Serenity. The quality of a movie is proportional to how much money it makes. I'm a crass materialist. ]

How about this hypothesis? Firefly got assigned the Fox Friday Night Death Slot because Joss pissed off somebody important (or lost their confidence) by spending half a season's budget to make the pilot episode, Serenity part 1 & 2. Building a spaceship on two soundstages and in computer graphics, Joss spent enough money to make 10 normal episodes. Rocket scientists are expensive. It was money well spent. I liked the results. But a cheesier looking spaceship at lower cost might have saved Firefly from cancellation. I heard that Joss saved his Dollhouse for one more season at Fox by cutting the budget per episode for the second season.

For the record I'm not saying it would be good for Joss to change his vision. I'm saying his vision was of a show that is setup to be canceled. Saying he doesn't deserve any blame for cancellation is just silly IMO.

I'm all for loving the show. I just don't think it's healthy to be spouting delusional hogwash.
