God damn, what a movie. Awesome from start to finish, Nicolas Cage with a rare brilliant performance and break out performances from Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz.. Definitely a movie of the year contender for me.

America loves a winner!

Might have to check it out. Looked good, and hope it lives up to expectations.

Thanks for the input.

Ok, how'd you pull this off since it opens on the 16th?

Never mind, I was pysched from the previews and had it on my "must watch opening day list" - Ok, call me a nerd but there are some habits that die hard. Ever since my Star Wars days I try to watch an anticipated (by me of course) movie on opening day.

I'm like a big kid at Christmas when it comes to certain movies, especially Kick-ass ones like this (pun intended).

I'm in...........especially after your raving review.

YES!
I saw this opening night with a group of friends, and we all loved it. It was one of my most anticipated movies of late (Scott Pilgrim anyone?) and it didn't disappoint at all. Was exactly what I thought it would be, kick ass! (How many times has that joke been made? 42 billion)
Chloe Moretz is turning out to be a great young genre star (currently shooting Let Me In, the US remake of Let the Right One In) and Nicholas Cage portrays Big Daddy with campy brilliance.

My friend turned to me about 30 seconds into the credits, after our collective "OH MY GOD THAT WAS BRILLIANT!" and said "if we drive to there's another screening at 11pm!"
He was serious.

Hopefully this won't be as underrated as Matthew Vaughn's last picture, the fantasy flick Stardust, which I thoroughly enjoyed also, even after I had no intention of seeing it due to the mediocre trailers. Saw it because it was the only thing on one day, and have watched it many a time since.

ETA: Also, since some people have major problems with it, I feel I should warn everyone that the film features.... the Creatively Used Naughty Talk word....
yes. read between the lines.
Also, said word is used by a 10 year old. It's funny, assuming you're fine with that word being used. Just a friendly warnin'. This ain't a film for your Spiderman loving kids. It's rated MA (R? in US?) for a reason. And yes, a parent brought his 10 year old kids to our session, and yes, they left after about half an hour.

Oh my god, another Stardust fan. I couldn't get anyone to go with me and went alone because I had a feeling about it. Saw it, loved it and wanted to shout it out loud how dumb my friends were for not seeing my enthusiasm for this film.

I've gotten the same feeling for Kick-Ass the moment I finished watching the trailer. I did a Keanu - whoa! what was that! - saw the trailer 2 more times and began patiently waiting for opening day (April 16th); meanwhile I googled everything Kick-Ass director, actors etc.

Seriously, Stardust was so much fun. Deniro as a gay pirate - ok Depp started it, but who'd have thought of it - not me. Not in a million years.

Yeah. This.

Plus narration by Ian McKellen, David Kelly as the guard of the wall, Mark Strong (love that guy!), Mark Heap (Spaced anyone?), Mark Williams as Billy, so much great stuff! Pretty sure it just came out on BluRay, looking forward to finally adding it to my collection. It deserves it.

Count me as a fan too.
I mainly watched it because of the Neil Gaiman connection and whilst I always thought it looked okay I wasn't expecting to much from it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it better than I first thought.

Looking forward to Kick-Ass.
It seems to have that Tarantino factor in that it has a certain 'coolness' about it.

I feel exactly the same way.
There are certain movies that I just have to see on opening night. Sometimes because I want to see the 'big event' film before others get a chance to hype up or play down it's impact. Sometimes it's a film that may have a big twist and I don't want to be spoiled by comments, reviews etc after it's opened.
Like you it's based on what I feel is must see movie, not what promotions or others tell me.

This is exactly the same for me. I'll see a film opening day if I think it looks like absolute perfection, or if I don't want to have people spoil it for me (big twist or not, often it's just that, like Kick Ass, I don't want my friends to be quoting it for ages before I see it).
It usually will be based on the trailers I've seen, moreso than the talent/story, simply because that is the best representation I have of the film.

Avatar for me was an opening day film, and I knew it had to be, as I attended Avatar Day, and that cemented in my mind, even though the trailer was mediocre, that the film would be wonderful. Which I thought it was.
Shutter Island was an opening day film because of the talent involved, the trailer, and the fact that I didn't want anyone to spoil it.

Next Opening Day film for me will be Book of Eli (maybe), Iron Man 2, or Toy Story 3. Cannot wait.

for some reason, in Australia, we get certain movies REALLY LATE. Book of Eli comes out next week.
It's REALLY annoying.
Other times, if they do poorly in the US, we don't get a cinema release at all.

Anyone seen Stay? Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Ryan Gosling? Yeah. Didn't do well at US, so we got it for one week. Luckily I saw that opening night, and loved it. Another good reason to go opening night - for those small movies you're not sure will last long!

Didn't realise you were from the land down under. That sucks having to wait so long.
Actually we get the similar treatment in the UK but it's generally not as bad as what I've heard you Aussies have to put up with and these days the bigger releases tend to be the same day or within a couple of weeks. Less well known films tend to suffer though and as you say may not even appear at the cinema.

Yeah, we're the same in that we get most of the big ones at the same time (sometimes earlier! Kick Ass came out here on the 8th!) I guess the other times it just depends on the companies. We don't get Harry Brown till May, and we don't get Legion till June, feel like they've been coming forever. Repo Men is July, and Nightmare on Elm Street remake is August apparently!
Ugh!

UK seems to be similar, different films just get delayed sometimes, it's really odd.

So no, I'm not one of those ugly americans who can't think of anything over than of the USA. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Just to sidetrack this thread a bit further and if you're willing to take a fellow Browncoats advice I would give Legion a miss, or at least wait until you don't have to pay any money for it. Major disappointment. I won't spoil it but it's not even so bad it's good (or unintentionally funny), it's just really really terrible.
Harry Brown is supposed to be good but I haven't seen it yet.

I have had that about Legion. Will probably give it a miss until it comes out on DVD, or I get a voucher or something. It's a shame because I love Paul Bettany usually, and a film about angels etc, should be excellent, but it sounds like it just all falls apart.
Harry Brown I'm excited about, love Michael Caine, and I've heard good things.

To take the thread back on topic, I saw Kick Ass AGAIN today. And I loved it again. I went with another friend who I saw it with last time, and a friend we took to see it for the first time. We all loved it. First time, second time, we all had a great time.
Upon seeing the credits roll this time, I decided. This is a release day BluRay buy for me. Love it.

Yeah, Legion was underwhelming for me.. I´m really looking forward to Nightmare on Elm st though, looks good. And Tron, Scott Pilgrim, The Last Airbender and many others.. Good year. But seriously, Kick-Ass.. seen it twice and it just blows my mind. One scene in particular which most people who´ve seen it probably will know is extremely awesome and something I´ve never seen before. Best comic-book movie for me.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Roger Ebert called it "morally reprehensible," and while I think that may be overstating it, since it is just a movie, he's not far wrong. As reprehensible as it is for the character of Damon Macready/"Big Daddy" (Nicolas Cage) to train his daughter in weaponry and martial arts to the point she becomes "Hit Girl" and helps him exact revenge against the mobster who helped frame him and send him to prison, I think it is almost as reprehensible that the parents of the twelve year old actress (Chloe Moretz) would allow her to appear in such a gruesome and graphically violent film, including her uttering just about every obscenity you would expect to hear in a Scorcese or Tarantino film.

I know those in the target audience will call me and Ebert old-fashioned and out of touch, but so be it. I don't have anything against violence or obscenity in films as long as it serves the story, but not when it is the entire story.

So I just saw this, and no spoilers, but this movie really should have been HIT-GIRL. How freaking awesome was she? and she had a way better superhero story. I found myself sitting through Kick-Ass's little dramas getting annoyed waiting to get back to Hit-Girl and her dad. Also, what was up with all the gay-bashing? Other than that, it was a fun flick - I'll give it a B.

I doubt I would agree with Ebert on most things, had stopped watching his show long before Siskel died. It's just in this case I agree with his assessment. I'm obviously not in the target demo for this film although I could have been if their intent hadn't been to depict the most graphic and goriest ways to off the bad guys or to show protagonists that are every bit as psychotic and morally bankrupt as the villains.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Except that's the point of the film. My only criticism is that the same point has been made in lots of other films and comic books. However, Kick Ass does it as a black comedy rather than the rather po-faced take in Watchmen and the Batman/Dark Knight stories.

You seem to think that you are obliged to support the protagonists or condone their actions in order to enjoy the movie. The idea of a vicious, foul-mouthed assassin who's also a sweet little child is meant to be disturbing. Disturbing can be funny, and funny can still have a point

I agree with IMNOTHERE.. And can´t we have one comic-book movie like this? Must they all be the same pg 13 shit? No, and Kick-Ass is rated R so the argument that it´ll ruin kids is dumb cause in that case, blame the people who let them in to the theatre. they shouldn´t even be able to watch it. As for the gore, there´s plenty of worse movies out there in terms of gore, only it´s not an 11 year old girl dishing it out. I´m sure if it had been a "Hit-Boy", people wouldn´t make any fuss about it at all.

My own thoughts:

One of the major characters is an eleven-year old girl, who's father has gone slightly mad and decided to train into an unstoppable killing machine, called Mindy.

If you smiled when reading that last sentence, you will love this film. Otherwise, you won't.

But I don't understand how the film can be immoral as such: it's all pretend. Do people think that it will encourage 11-year old girls to gun down any drug dealers they encounter?

No, and Kick-Ass is rated R so the argument that it´ll ruin kids is dumb cause in that case

Exactly.

Looking at teh interwebs, there seems to be as much fuss over Hitgirl's pottymouth (particularly the C word) as the carnage. Do people think that kids don't know these words?

Apparently the actress is going to be in the US remake of child vampire flick Let the right one in. Poor girl - its going to be years before she can watch any of her own films!

Actually, I was fairly surprised that it was only cert 15 in the UK, c.f. Watchmen which was 18. So I guess a semi-realistic rape scene trumps a 12 year old calling a room full of drug dealers cs - sounds a bit too rational for the BBFC, but then...

FREMDFIRMA

Yanno, I don't pay attention to none of the mostly drek comin outta hollywood, so I didn't even hear about this flick till today, when someone showed me the trailer, pointed out the kid and goes "One of yours" ? with a snide look on his mug.

I think imma wee bit sympathetic to ECGordons thoughts on it, having an affiliation through some of my work in youth rights with Paul Peterson, who addresses many of those issues.
http://www.minorcon.org/index.html

Still, it's kinda hypocritical to criticize a kid for an acting role where they get to be a big screen superhero, and they *know* the violence is all fake - when we live in a society where that violence is often all too real, all around children of that age and often directed at them.

I'd think addressing the latter should take precedence, is all - and yeah, I *do* teach kids of that age self-defense, and maybe to a degree some folk find extreme, but consider what happened to most of em before that - their pysche requires knowing they're not helpless in order to ever be whole again.

Anyhows, it's just a movie, and while I might have some moral issues over it, I can't help but think how hard I woulda jumped on something like that with both feet when *I* was that age if someone had offered me a role like that!
Bet she had a ton of fun with it, too.

So forgive me for not being so terribly offended by a child actor reveling in fantasy violence as a fun adventure when I see kids up to their eyebrows unwilling in the real thing all the time.

SHINYGOODGUY

I recall almost similar comments regarding 13-year-old Natalie Portman in her role in The Professional. She cursed up a storm and became a "hit girl" of sorts within the framework of the story.

I have the uncut version and there's a scene that was not in the theatrical release. I guess the censors here in the states did not feel it to be appropriate. It is a scene where she winds up in bed with Leon The Professional. No, there's no sex involved, although throughout the film she repeatedly asks him to bed her. He, quite morally, refuses stating her youth.

I'm not surprised that the censors chose to cut this scene, which was important to the overall story. But nothing happened. As a matter of fact it depicted Leon's maturity and character.

I'm not equating The Professional to Kick Ass in substance or delivery, only in terms of the youth of the female characters and the crudeness of the dialougue. There was more character development in the Professional. But, in both cases, you have "daddy" figures teaching their charges to be grown up in the big bad cruel world.

Moretz was electrifying as Hit Girl, both she and Nick Cage made this movie enjoyable for me. It was funny wihtout being too moronic and action-packed, filled with Tarantino-like fight scenes and cool music to go along with it. Cage was pitch-perfect as Big Daddy, with just the right amount of camp.

The young actor who played Kick Ass was just dorky enough to give us the average high school kid vibe wanna-be superhero. It was quirky and funny, but Moretz for me stole the show. I think, as with Portman, that she's gonna be something special within a couple of years. She's not even 13 yet. In an interview conducted at the Comic Con she was very professional in talking about her role as Hit Girl.

In a couple of weeks I will go back and see it again.

I think that was the original idea, but she was too hard a character to empathise with. What was she thinking/ feeling when dealing with the drug dealers, for example? So Kick-ass was added as a viewpoint character.

We know what Kick-ass was thinking at that moment: "Oh dear God, what the h*ll is that... please don't kill me."

SINGATE

Ya know I almost didn't see this, glad I changed my mind. What a ride! From the opening when the superhero wannabe makes a crash landing to the end when vengence is served this was a very entertaining flick.

I can understand why so many people loved the character of Hit Girl. I guess she can serve as role model. I mean if it's okay for guys to aspire to be Batman why can't girls do the same? What I don't agree with is the notion that Kick Ass the character was boring and/or unimportant. The difference between these characters fuels the endless debate of revenge vs. justice. Kick Ass dons the mask because he is outraged by society's indifference to victims. Hit Girl is fueled by the need to avenge the wrongs her parents suffered. Of course she would not have done any of this without her father leading the way.

Speaking of Big Daddy I really liked Nicholas Cage's performance. It would have been easy, especially for him, to take the character way over the top. He really hit the nail on head by playing this guy as a low key killer who also cares deeply about his daughter. I know a lot of people may disagree about that last part considering what he raised her to be but I do think it is accurate. One more thing, Cage was particularly hilarious when voicing his character in costume. I have to believe this is a shot at the way Christian Bale hams it up when dressed as Batman.

Based on the way the film ended I have to think the door is open for a sequel. Here's hoping. It would be fascinating to see how the passage of time would effect the characters and their motivations.

Love it.

I liked Legion betterm than I thought I would. But then I'm a fan of Dark Angel, and seeing Joshua again was nice. Not a big Bettany fan, but he pulled it off I thought, One of his better performances. I think a lot of the visuals will be lost on a smaller screen.

No, but I doubt that they would get on. Bluntly, our BDHs are criminals. The last time we saw them on their day job, they were robbing a bank.

The last time we saw Mindy, she was hospitalising two kids for trying to steal her lunch money. What do you think she would do to a bunch of bank robbers?

So if she ever encountered the crew of Serenity, it would probably be bloodshed at first sight...

(FWIW - I think Mindy wins if she has access to firearms. Otherwise, I'm betting on River on grounds of her greater reach and, presumably, strength.)

yes, but that´s why I said what a great team up they would be. It´s not like Mindy and BD are exatcly obeying the law either. They´d kick the living shit out of anyone.
