It's been a while since I've seen it in the news, but it really hasn't fallen off my radar. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan, and am always excited for a new big screen adaptation (Even if I think that it could have been done better, but this isn't about Spider-Man 3). With news of the new movie, I've been thinking about how I think it should be done, and I wanted some of your opinions as well.

Note: I am going to completely ignore everything going on behind the scenes in regards to should there even be another movie, why Sam Raimi left, studio involvement, who is writing the new movie, who will be directing it, or who they will cast as Peter/Spider-man. The movie will be made, I'm fairly sure of that. My only concern right now is the story, even though I'm pretty sure what I am about to suggest is not what they will do. But, given the power, my movie would go something like this.

First, the title. This is not Spider-Man 4. It's a reboot. I'm going to accept that this new movie will be about Peter while he was in high school. Therefore I would take a cue from the recent Hulk movie and use the classic comic title. My movie would be "The Amazing Spider-Man"

Second, how Peter got his powers and become Spider-Man. I feel this is pretty well established for movie goers. Uncle Ben has been in all previous films, and though this is a reboot, we don't need to see his death again. It's been done. That being said, it should have some mention, but it shouldn't be a major plot point. This is a pivotal point in Peter's life, but it's always there in the back of his mind, so that's where it should be left.

As to how Peter got his powers, I would tweak it a little from Spider-Man 1. For the purpose of the main plot (more to come) I think this should be changed to more closely resemble the 1994 cartoon. In the cartoon he got his powers while observing a neogenics experiment at NYU performed by Dr. Curt Conners. I would do this for two reasons. First, it would be a recognizable scene for those who were fans of the cartoon and not the comics themselves. Second, it would help great a great bond between the lives of Peter and Dr. Conners. Now this wouldn't be the focus of the first act, more a a flashback, since Spider-Man already covered the origins in great detail.

Third, the main plot. This ties back to how Peter got his powers in that it is the same research that leads Dr. Connors to become the Lizard, our "villain" for the movie. Once he becomes the Lizard, it is up to Spider-Man to solve the mystery of this create and ultimately save his friend. Once Peter discovers the link between the origin of his powers and those of the Lizard, we will come to the main theme of the movie. This is an idea taken from "The Other" story line from ASM#525-528 (as well as other Spider-Man titles). Is Peter the man, or he is the spider? Will he be able to control his new gifts, or will he give in to them and become the monster like Dr. Connors did? He is a young man in this movie, and he has to comes to terms with who he is and what his responsibilities are (we all know the quote). It would be a sort of coming of age film, deciding who you are and what you are going to do with your life.

In the end he would save Dr. Connors and the two would become close, as the do in the comics. I'm against killing such a character because hopefully their relationship could be used in future movies.

So, this is a summary of the direction I think the new movie should take. What do you all think?

ZEEK

I like it. The lizard is a good first movie.

I think they did one heck of a job with the spectacular spider-man series. If the movie goes the Lizard route I'd like to see them borrow the storyline of Peter struggling between "curing" himself when he cures Connors. There are plenty of times that being spider-man is a burden for Peter. If they play up some of that then at the end he can be on the fence of using whatever cure he finds for the lizard on himself. Finally seeing the positive impact he has on Dr. Connor's family can prevent him from taking the easy way out.

Also stick with Gwen as his love interest. Having her die in a later movie could be really powerful.

I don't know, that sounds good to me and brings back fond memories, but if they're really gonna wipe the Sam Raimi canon entirely and focus on high school Peter, a la the Ultimate Spider-man books, I'd REALLY like to see them follow those books. Bring in Brian Michael Bendis and let him do his thing.

One of the problems with the first three was that Spidey wasn't smart-mouthed enough for me. Here's a quote from Bendis that suggests he was originally meant to be even LESS so:

Quote:

I was invited to see the first Spider-Man movie in Sam Raimi’s office. Marvel wanted me to take a look at it. So I’m having this nerd-gasm of seeing the movie in Sam Raimi’s office. It was unfinished. It was six months before it came out. I was sitting on a couch next to Stan Lee who I really had never met. That was a really profound day for me. I did watch Stan the entire time and not the movie because I was much more interested in what was going through his head than what was going on in the movie. Honestly, I don’t think I said a damn thing. When the movie was over there were a couple of places where Sam Raimi was specifically asking for help. Stan was very emotional, not boo-hooey emotional, but very verklempt. He finally saw his vision come to life. Technology had finally caught up with his imagination. He got to watch it. I watched all this happen and literally when Sam said, “Do you think you could write a line of dialogue?” Stan literally just grabbed his coat and said, “Hey buddy, I wrote 129 issues. You can have any line of dialogue you want from them. I’m out of here. See you later guys. Bye, bye.” He’s out. And I stayed for hours because I was honored that they even asked me. An hour in, I was sitting in the office there and writing lines of dialogue. I thought at the time the one thing that was missing that they did eventually fix was that Spider-Man had no funny lines. He’s not trash-talking. So I wrote a line of dialogue that made fun of the Green Goblin costume. And one of the producers looked at me like I had just peed on her. She goes, “That costume costs a lot of money.” I say, “I know but he would make fun of it. He would make fun of everything. He’s a trash-talking basketball player.” And I could see that look of “Get the fuck out of here,” but she hadn’t said that yet. And I thought Stan’s a genius. He knew to leave. This man knew, “Go. Run.” He knew. That’s a man who has experience in the world.

The entire interview, which focuses mostly on Ultimate Spider-Man is here: http://www.bookslut.com/features/2009_02_014023.php

If you enjoy comics and haven't read these, I REALLY recommend them. There are 22 TPB volumes to date.

If they're NOT going to follow these books, I just pray that Spidey is a trash-talking funny-guy and that Peter is more awkward and a little pathetic.

...It WOULD be nice to finally see the Lizard hit the scene, though.

I agree, Spider-Man wasn't smart mouthed enough in any of the movies. It's a nice little defense mechanism he's built up for when he's knows he is in trouble, and I would have liked to see more of it. Also, it shows just how more confident Peter is when he's Spider-Man.

I also agree with having Gwen Stacy in it, but I would include MJ as well. But just because they were in high school together (for that reason there would also be Flash and Harry). All these characters should be there because they all have something to contribute in the world of Spider-Man. But with Gwen and MJ, Gwen is and always will be Peter's first choice. Let's face it, he settled. The end result of "One More Day" would have been different he Gwen was involved rather than MJ, IMO.

STORYMARK

Word now is that this reboot will be more-or-less a direct adaptation of the first story arc of the Ultimate Spider-Man series. So, if they stick to that, there'll be no lizard, but instead a mutated Green Goblin.

If that's true, it makes no sense to me. Why do another Goblin story? There are so many plot lines to draw from. I just don't see the reasoning behind doing another one involving the Goblin.

Granted, I haven't read any of the Ultimate comics, but if they want to draw from them I'm sure there are more stories there than just the Green Goblin ones.
