What Would Mal do ?

I don't think I've ever watched one...I believe that the box office speaks for itself not some snotty artsy group of folks who are more interested in the current trend of political correctness..ie, how many gay moments could we force onto the script or did we take clever stabs at the current presidential administration or religious group or stereo type...

if you make a cool movie and market it well, people will spend their time and money...which is exactly the opposite of what the awards handed out last night...dis Cameron all you want, but he's still laughing all the way to the bank a month after his latest opened....granted I didn't need a dose of Guya worship, but aside from that, the movie was way cool and a solid milestone in movie tech.
things like Starwars, Trek, other fun movies that I do spend my money on..never anticipate seeing them...but let Sandra Bullock get tossed on a flick and it's all tears and world peace..ok..rant complete...exit when ready...

I used to record the whole thing and then fast forward through it the following day to just the results bit of each category. I stopped that a few years ago.

There was some great films and talent on show but I can't really say that there was a lot that I really cared about for winning an award.
Up got Best Animated Film which it deserved and I'm happy with that.
I've not seen Crazy Heart so I can't comment on Jeff Bridges or the film.
I really like Avatar but I am also glad that it didn't get any major awards. It's a spectacle movie that wowed people with it's 3D. It's excellent at it as well, just not award-worthy.

The only one I did care about enough would be Hurt Locker. I am glad this got two of the big awards and it was well deserved as it is easily the best film out of all the ones nominated. It appears to have been seriously overlooked in my country. Whenever I mention it to so-called film fans they haven't heard of it or shrug their shoulders at it. Maybe this will get it some of the attention it deserves over here.

I thought the opening jokes with Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin were pretty funny, well funny enough to make me laugh. Then I switched channels to watch the season finale of Big Love. I hadn't seen any of the nominated films, not even Avatar, so seeing the results in the morning on CNN was good enough.

I gave up watching the oscars when Martin Scorcese didn't win for GOODFELLAS. Since then I realised it's all just political bollocks.

I sincerely hope Kathryn Bigelow won it for best Director because it's the best directed film and NOT because it was time to give the nod to a female director.... But the oscars being what they are you just don't know.

I always liked the EMPIRE awards. They seemed less inclined to bias or favouritism.

OH and well done to JEFF BRIDGES. Although he should have got it for the Big Lebowski years ago!

The best moments for me were NPH's Opening Number, and the extended Commercial for Castle when the show was over.

NPH should be the host next year. He's so the man. When he came running out it was the best moment of the whole thing IMO.

I didn't really care about any of the movies or actors/actresses in the top categories. I really wish all movies were considered for these things and not just dramas and top box office performers. I mean why can't a person who really nails a comedic role get best actor/actress? Oh no! They didn't have to fake cry! How could they possibly act without having to fake cry!?

edit: oh and yesterday the only comment I read in the reviews about NPH was that his opening number was odd and out of place. Something about it being too much of a "Tony's" thing. What? Didn't Huge Ackman do a musical number last year? Wasn't Billy Crystal constantly doing musical numbers to start the show? Why is it out of place?

Surely the biggest oversight EVER in Oscar history?

With you there. Empire's awards get the talented people to show - those who don't give a toss about who's wearing what - and not just those out to have there picture taken.

That's just it though I don't think it was an oversight. I think the level and depiction of violence was just too risqué for the academy to be supporting it.
So they just shunned him.

But

Y'know what's worse though Lwaves, what's worse than Scorcese missing out on the oscar back then, is the fact that James Cameron ended up winning an oscar for direction before Scorcese. Jeez! No disrespect to James Cameron - y'know maybe he deserved it for the endeavour alone. But really, he in no way should have won an oscar before Scorcese. No way!

It was an oversight for me because whilst I can agree that Goodfellas could be seen as too violent for the academy, the oversight comes because he had never won it before. To me Goodfellas winning would have made up slightly for this. Personally I think Raging Bull should have won as it is far better than Rocky, although I do like Rocky.

As for Cameron I really like his films but I wouldn't consider him award-worthy, at least not the major categories. He makes popular movies (nothing wrong with that) but if he winning awards you may as well have Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich winning.

Oscars seemed too scripted and very tame and reserved this year. But there were some lovely speeches. And I always Love NPH. Also it was time for the amazing Jeff Bridges to get some.

Kind of surprised Bigelow walked away with Best Director prize, although it was a good movie, but Best Picture?

Jury's still out for me on that one. I haven't seen Crazy Heart (no nom for best film although Jeff nominated for Best Actor, strange). And I have yet to see Up in the Air. I reserve judgment till then.

Happy for Sandra Bullock and Monique.

Sandy because she's good people (she once produced the George Lopez sitcom), and Monique because she was scary good in Precious - well deserved.

Martin and Baldwin were lukewarm at best as hosts. I know I'm junping around but, stream of consciousness folks.

.......to be continued...............

count me in on the 'just not award-worthy camp'
although I saw it twice, I thought it to be a good solid entertaining movie, but not Best Picture material.
