This looks like it could have a lot of similarities to Firefly, a transport ship on the Rim, one job at a time... keep flying... The graphics look pretty spectacular as well. Anyone playing it?

The Man They Call Soul...

I played it for a while. It's fun to play, and you can play it more or less any way you like.

Soul (after a long pause): "Yeah. Because I have one."

(Bear in mind this is from a non PvPers perspective.)

Off and on, it's kind of depressing cause the game is run by a pack of former griefers kicked off of every MMO out there - in fact the same bunch of jerks who more or less wrecked Ultima Online, and as such, they encourage a "community" based on all the darkest parts of human nature...

Which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't go out of their way and deliberately foster game imbalances to reward that behavior, and meddle with the game in such a fashion to (admittedly) drive off folks who don't wanna play that way, which is economically suicidal, since no one wants to pay good money to be some pathetic little punks buttmonkey cause the game mechanics hand you over to them on a plate...

Of course, if you *want* to be "evil", on the other hand...

Problem with that is it's not satisfying cause the tilted mechanics make it TOO EASY, a week old rookie can easily down a five year vet, and there's really no possible defense against that kind of thing.
(best I can explain to non players, the combat is kinda rock-paper-scissors, but if you're not a PvP specialist, it's kinda like you're not allowed to use scissors, and the other guy KNOWS this...)

On the plus side, it's graphically beautiful, doesn't require the rapid coordinated reflexes of a flightstick based game, and gives off a realistic feeling of space travel "atmosphere".

And it has what I consider (save for later patched in T2/T3 stuff at the high end) hands down the best crafting system ever seen in an MMO, straight from mining your own ore to building the pieces to final product assembly.

Downside is that the learning curve is absolutely evil steep, and you will never, EVER be able to compete in any way with someone with more time in, so you have to kind of live with that, which you can if you can carve out your own niche where no one much cares, which is kinda what Mal did, no ?

If you can manage to learn the game in peace, it'll be fun for a while, but as a rookie you're easy meat for the same type of jerks who corpse camp newbie zones in other MMOs, and the community is about 80% of them, so a lot of folk get run right out by getting killed over and over and over again during or shortly after the tutorial, THAT gets bothersome quickly, since unlike other MMOs it's legal, even encouraged, to behave that way, and there's not jack damn all you can DO about it, except become more or less a reaver yourself.

I like the game engine, the building of stuff, but the community and it's horribly broken, flawed and unbalanced combat mechanics are a constant irritation.

But if you're a PvPer who loves having defenseless targets handed to you on a plate, well, it's your game, till a bigger fish swallows you, anyhows.

Give it a try, just remember to never trust anyone, and that you're prettymuch going to get your arse shot clean off nonstop for a MONTH or so just learning to play.

Thx SoS, Frem.

It looks stunning and the detailed controls make it look like the game design has been very well thought out, but I take your cautions. I always look at these and think of them on the one hand as potentially an amazing immersive experience (especially adding the Firefly similarities into the mix), but on the other hand they could just be time sinks.
