I don't know. While it would be super fun, making your own way in the verse living aboard a Firefly with Mal would be a little difficult.

PROS:

-He is funny

-He is tough

-He has a good mind for business

-He hates the Alliance

CONS:

-Crabby, stubborn

-He is always right

-He has a compassionate side he just doesn't show it much.

-During the film Serenity he was at an all time negative low..perhaps cause he missed Inara?

-My brother said "he's kind of a dick huh?" I had no reply

Your thoughts?

If I *had* to get on a ship, and had to accept someone being in charge, Mal is probably a better bet than any. They were dead in space running out of oxygen, and yeah, it was lucky they survived and he got the problem fixed, but he FOUGHT for that. Just the same as when they were running from Haven, and went to Miranda, and took it to the Alliance. If a captain can do the suicidal and people manage to survive, that's a good captain.

But if I DIDN'T have to, no, that wouldn't be my first choice. Simon would get promoted out of butt monkey acceptable joke and prank target, and I have a pretty good idea who'd fill it instead. And I'd want to shut him and Inara in a shuttle together for like a month, after which I'm fairly certain I'd have a short trip out the airlock.

Sounds kinda like my boyfriend a l'il bit XD lol.

Sure, I could live with Mal for a boss. Crabby and stubborn's no big deal because I've lived with crabby and stubborn, and I like clever people. Mal's pretty clever and sometimes subtle about it, especially with his humor. Make's life fun.

I'd rather work for and live with him than with Jayne o_<

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Mal can be stubborn, petulant and rash on occasions, but he redeems himself by being extremely loyal to those in his care. So yeah, I could live with him.

That's a tough one. I probably could if I had to as I have known (and been related to) a fare share of depressed, PTSD, bipolar (not saying Mal is, but try existing with them), ect peoples.

Being a younger gal prone to bouts of Kaylee like disposition I'd probably fall into his little meimei category, so it probably wouldn't be too bad most days.

He takes care of his crew, he's a fighter and the underdog, but I'm still fairly certain the man suffers from PTSD or something similar. It's very hard to live with someone like that. They have good days and everything's ok. However if something triggers some bad memories, watch out, because bad days can be pretty intolerable. Then you're also in a confined space like Serenity, and he's your leader.

Kinda still on the fence.

Ash

I think I would end up with a wrench hitting my head and waking inside an airlock with the outside door open as the spaceship is lifting off. In other words, could Mal live with me?

I'm gonna go with...no. Would much rather watch from the pleasant distance of the screen than deal with his type in RL (which I have already). People like that are easy to care about and pretty much impossible to deal with in person if you want to have a life and make decisions of your own.

which, incidentally, is probably why "followers" on his crew get on with him better than the "non-followers", such as Simon, Inara, and Book.

America loves a winner!

Don't see why not. He seems fair, competent and not overly tough. He may contradict himself a time or two, but there's little he won't do himself that he'd ask others of his crew to do as well. In fact, I see Mal as one who'd go all out to put his crew first, even over his own skin.

Well, sure, and that's why I said he's a good captain. But his disposition in a bad mood is about as pleasant as being held at gun point. Literally, he draws on people, even members of his own crew, and threatens to shoot them if he's annoyed/upset/frustrated/hungover/stomach ache/slightly itchy. And they can't all be good days.

He'd definitely be a challenge to live with. He has a fluid sense of boundaries. For example, telling Zoe not to marry Wash. Do you think she asked him? But conversely, at times we see him withholding when letting others in even a little bit would make things so much easier. I'm thinking here of his refusal to explain anything to Simon in Bushwhacked, when they were being boarded. Even just saying, "I have a plan." But he didn't, he just let Simon get more and more upset. He did the same thing with Tracey later on, too! No one's ever supposed to ask him a question, for any reason, about what he's doing or thinking - except Zoe.

And when he hurts Kaylee's feelings in Shindig, she didn't act surprised. So he's done it before.

That being said, if I needed to pick a ship to work on, and a Captain to work for, it would be a relief to know that he'd go to the lengths that Mal goes to, to take care of his crew. I'd just have to grow a thick skin, I suppose.

Definitely. I like a man who's always right.
Moody? Me too.
I follow orders just fine.
Colour me his new Wash.

Yeah. :)

Of course, traveler brought up a good point: probably just as important in that equation is if he and the crew would like us. In my case, let's hope they don't have anything with sugar or caffeine on board. On the other hand, a dash of explosive powder in Jayne's food could theoretically be hilarious. Metal utensils can make sparks!

Also static electricity built up in clothing.

...I'd blow myself up in the first day or so. ._.

If I managed to survive the inital alpha-dog pissing contest, I think we'd get on famously.

Or I could just as easily find myself waking up in the airlock...

Either way, it'd be hilarious.

Maybe not in that crapshoot verse, stuck between greedy criminal bastards and a lawful neutral to evil authoritarian government. Taken in context, Serenity very nearly lives up to her name.

I'd struggle living with Inara though.

Well, I suspect she wouldn't be around much, anyway. But she and Mal FIGHTING, yeah, that could be hard to live with.

BTW, I haven't had a chance yet to rewatch Heart of Gold considering the perspective you proposed, but I mean to. I'll send you a message when I do.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think it would be tough at first, but I think in the end I'd fit in with the crew and Mal would keep me around. Got a lot of the same ideals. Don't know we'd ever be drinking buddies, but we wouldn't shoot each other either.

I think I'd end up with about the same dynamic as Simon does, only worse, because I'm not near as strong as Simon, and Simon's strength is what Mal has a grudging respect for. Brains and good intentions, which I share with Simon, Mal doesn't find particularly worthy of respect. So I conjure he wouldn't have much time for me.

It'd all be worth it, though, if I ended up with the same dynamic with Kaylee as Simon does!

totally. i'm woefully unprepared for survival in the 'verse. My one hope is to find a strong leader and polish his boots.

I have several family members who act like Mal and Zoe. So yeah, I could put up with him. But for how long is the real question.

I'm not unlike Mal in some ways so I'm sure we'd argue a lot. But I think he'd appreciate that. I think I could share digs with him as long as I remember he's the captain and it's his ship.
