Who do you think the two new crew members will be? The Universal Press release said that they will be brand new to the storyline. Do you think they might be played by same big time actors?

Anyways, since there is no mention that Ron and Alan are coming back, though www.fireflymovie.com is reporting they just haven't signed the contracts, but do you think that these two new crew members will replace Book and Wash? Remember, this is suppose to be six months from where the series left off so it could be feasable that Wash and Book died or left the ship for whatever reasons and Mal picked up two new members including a new pilot.

Just some thinking I have been doing.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I don't think they're taking on two new crew members. The release says that Mal "takes on two new passengers—a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister" - They're obviously talking about Simon and River.

It would definitely be possible for both of the characters to have died or left in the supposed 6 months between show and film, but thnik about this.

1. Wash is married to Zoe. He loves her enough (or is just afraid enough) to not accept the advances of Saffron. I don't think he'd just up and leave her. At least I hope he wouldn't. Could've been killed, but...well...I just hope he's not killed off because Alan Tudyk doesn't sign his contract.

2. If Book gets killed then no one will ever find out his secrets (aside from River who probably already knows but won't tell). If Book were to have left the ship he could still come back, but I like his character too darned much to see him nixed from the movie due to a failure to sign contracts.

In closing, Wash and Book are cool. They're two of my nine fave characters on the show, and the movie just wouldn't be the same without them.

The official release says this....

....Serenity will continue and expand upon the adventures of the memorable characters launched in the series, who will be joined by new characters created expressly for the motion picture adaptation.

Right. It does not specify that those new folks will be crew, though. It just says new... Could be new Blue Hands, new Reavers, anything.

Well, anyways, the two new characters must be of some importance if it warrants to be announced in the first press release. I don't think it will be characters playing in minor roles like a blue hand or reaver would. Maybe they expect to get two big name actors for those two new roles. Either way, it seems those two new characters will be important to the movie.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I doubt seriously that Joss will bring on any big name actors for the movie. It would cost too much to bring them onboard, and there is no sense wasting the budget on them.

I do not think the new characters will necessarily be crew, but perhaps people who will be antagonists to the crew, or perhaps allies who will have recurring roles if the series gets put back on TV.

I still say Sean Bean as an Alliance officer bent on taking Mal in. Would be great !!

The new characters could be the guest villans. This implies to me that we won't be meeting old villans (probably as it would be more effort than it's worth to explain their back story too).

Bummer... I was hoping Early would make another apperance.

A la Rev Bem from Andromeda? It would be interesting, but would Joss do something thats already been (sorta) done?

And you'd have to wonder at the psycological turmoil that would create for the poor Reaver.

Did someone say Sean Bean? *thunk*

He is one of my two favorite actors in the World. Now all you have to do is suggest Peter Wingfield as a creepy blue-handed bastard and I'm gonna *double thunk*

I hope they bring in the doctors that operated on River. It would be a good tie-in between the Alliance, Blue Hands and River.

Can someone get a link to an official press release?

I imagine that the new characters would be some villians that are after them.

Official press release is at

www.universalpictures.com

On the right side is a "News" section that scrolls up. When you see mention of Joss Whedon, click on it - that takes you to the press release.

Very shiny to see it all official like on the Universal site.

As for Sean Bean & Peter Wingfield as guest villians, that would be great. I liked Sean Bean in the Sharpe series, and his work in Golden Eye & LotR: Fellowship of the Ring, not to mention Ronin, Bravo Two Zero & Patriot Games (can't wait to see him in "Troy").

Peter Wingfield was excellent as Methos in the Highlander series. Saw his guest spot on Andromeda. It was good to see him on the small screen again.

I kinda agree with Astriana, except I think that whoever wrote the press release was mistaken, and was describing the episode "Serenity" and not the BDM "Serenity". I mean really, a whole 'nother pair of young-doctor-&-crazy-sister? It strikes me as being too close for Joss, and too close for chance - it has to be a mistake.
Of course, wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, either.....

There will almost certainly be a new character on Serenity- you have to have someone around to introduce the characters to (and at the same time the audiance). That's the only way they'd be able to do it quickly enough when they've got so many characters and so little time.

That's an excellent point, Talonpest. I also think a famous-actor-but-not-quite-superstar (can you say Laurence Fishburne? ) might be cast as one of the new characters/main villains to create a bigger buzz and draw a larger audience of 'newbies'

Oh yes. An outsider to explain things to will almost be essential to this stroy. If there is no such character there to explain background to, those of us familiar with the landscape will get really bored really quickly. There must be a legitimate excuse to cover the background. An outsider is a time-honored cliche among writer's which has risen to the ranks of Archetype.
