There is no way in hell that the Firefly movie will begin with the original Firefly theme song.

I don't think we're going to hear the Sonny Rhodes version of the Firefly theme song in the movie. That is, until the credits roll. That's when we will hear it.

During the movie, I'm guessing we'll be teased with instrumental tributes to the theme, but no more.

As soon as the movie ends, the original theme song will start, and the credits will roll. A powerful moment indeed. A push towards the resurrection of the TV series.

Just a guess.

I kind of expect that we'll hear it before the credits. Joss said that he always envisioned it as something being sung by an old man on a porch, and it wouldn't suprise me at all to see him take this oppertunity to do just that somewhere in the background.

Ahh! Excellent thought. That would be a great way to do it. Maybe even in a flashback scene, an old man sings it to young Mal, or a young Book. Fun to think about.

What about the original Sonny Rhodes studio version? An old man on the porch during the movie is great. It makes it even more likely that we'll hear the original studio version when the credits roll.

In "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" they performed "A Man of Constant Sorrow" at least four different ways.

I'd like to hear the original Firefly theme song when the movie credits roll, because it guides the story back to television land.

The theme will certainly be modified and extended for the movie- the 50 second bit isn't going to cut it. And when have you seen a movie based on a show where it's had the exact same theme? Plus the fact that Joss has said in one of those press releases that the movie's being called Serenity to give it some distance from the show, which means that it's possible that the show's theme won't be the main theme at all.

And if the show were to come back after the movie, I'm guessing it would A) be called Serenity, and B) the theme would be at the very least redone in a slightly different style.

Question is what style of music will they use for the opening theme and if it has words who will sing them? I have nightmares about the latest 'in' group singing a 'pop' song.

What's your worse nightmare?

The movie will open with the aftermath of the battle of Serenity, just as the last of the browncoats are finally being picked up by Alliance transports.

The song will be sung around a fire a cappella by wounded soldiers as the Allience rolls in.

As the highest ranking surviving resistance fighter, Mal is brought in for interogation. As he is heared onto a ship, fairly well broken, we see Mal walk by a commanding Alliance officer without really look at him. But we, the audience, will get a good look at the officer.

It is Book.

Cut to a reaction shot of Book as the camera pans back to survay the utter devestation and suffering of the remaining soldiers.

Roll opening credits with full version of song. As the credits roll, we will see a montage of clips from the TV show that will catch eveyone up to date with our story thus far so that even those who have not seen the show will be able to launch right into the mocie fully up tp speed.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think 'Tash is right. I think we will get some western style instrumental when the movie opens. I do believe that we might see Sonny Rhoades in make up as an old man on a porch singing a version of the song when the cast wander past as TalonPest mentioned.

I fully hope that Joss will put the original version on as the credits roll at the end, as a tribute to all and to lead into the TV series.

I suppose it would depend on what the composer and director decide upon. They may want the main theme but in an orchestral setting, or something smaller and more intimate...it'll be neat to see what they do though

Universal owns USA and Sci-Fi Channel. Sci-Fi has been doing a lot of original films lately, but these are filmed in Europe. Stargate which is going into it's 8th season is produced in Canada and has a new spinoff series that will be on Sci-Fi this summer. And now Battlestar Galactica will also have a short series on Sci-Fi... if it gets good ratings that show could go into full length series production.

Universal also produced the Hercules and Xena shows that ran in syndication and were very successful, but again those were produced in NZ were it cost less than in California.

So the key thing for us browncoats is to make the Movie as successful as we can and Universal can put it on Sci-Fi, or in syndication. But hopefully they can do it so they won't have to move production out of the country. Otherwise all those planets are gonna look very Pacific-Northwest.

Well. . .

No matter at what point during the movie the song is played through the speakers, I can almost guarantee one thing. . .

every browncoat in the theatre will stand and sing along. . .not boisterous and obnoxious, but very respectfully, paying homage. Hell. . .we might even put our hands over our hearts.

The theme tune is fine as it is but it'd be great if it did play at the end. There's never really a theme tune for the start of a movie is there? Gawd! I'm gonna take all the family along to see this. I'm the only one who's seen the show so far. I'll make browncoats out of 'em if it's the last thing I do.

And Universal is now owned by NBC. There's one fly in this ointment. Joss is still operating under the terms of an exclusive made-for-tv deal with 20th-Century Fox studios. Universal could not produce a Firefly television series until that deal expires. This is the reason Nathan said to expect perhaps more movies but not a return to television any time soon.

I'm sure Universal will be more than happy to show all Firefly movies on SciFi, however.

Important people don't do field work.

That song has to be in the movie. Never have I heard a theme song that didn't have the title of the show in it that so concisely defined and imagined the show I was about to watch. Even when I first saw "The Train Job" way back in 2002, I was iffy. But not about that song. That song is one of my favorites of all time. I'd like to hear an expanded version, but I won't say that I wouldn't be more than a little hurt if the song wasn't in the movie. I was thinking about this the other day.

Then again, how shiny would it be to see the movie in the theater, the song comes on, and you begin to identify browncoats because they're singing along like it was the national anthem.

Shiny!

Mmm-hmm. And Alex Rodriguez has to wait another seventeen years 'til his deal with the Rangers is done, before he can play with the Yankees, too.

I'd suspect that Joss and the cast see this as an opportunity to make a (well-deserved) break into movies. If the first movie is successful, a big portion of the cast may be too busy doing 'other things' to participate in an on-going TV show, no matter how much we love it. Maybe they do have to wait 5 years before they can bring the series back, but then again, maybe...

Would anyone begrudge JW or the cast for hoping for success? Not I. I suspect that Nathan's analysis was correct: We'll get three movies, if we're lucky.

Respectfully,

Maybe when the film blows the lid off theater attendance records (and it WILL!) 20th Century Fox wil plant their lips firmly on JW's posterior and give him carte blanche to do a return to tv, as long as it makes them money.

Hopefully, by then, there may be an executive in that den of theives who knows quality when they see it instead of all this "reality" crap. Who knows, it may even be somebody that can actually use a computer and can see the fan base out there (read $$$)as well as the potential for new viewers. Such an enlightened individual would be familiar with the proverb about the goose that lays the golden eggs and treat it accordingly.

It's not as if JW is new or unproven in this business. Just hand him the resources, get out of his way, watch the coffers fill up and enjoy. After all, for them, it's all about the money.

Am I being too optimistic??

One thing we can hope for is a firefly soundtrack!
That would be very Shiny!

Also, I am pretty sure that Joss is not going to do what we will expect with this movie.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the fact that there will be more of the Crew to experience, but we must understand that he is basically "Starting over" with this franchise.
Having to continue pleasing his core audience while bringing up new fans is going to be quite a challenge, and those of us purists will have to adapt as well, and expect some things to stay the same, yet some things to be completely different.

So in that light, I could see the original firefly theme not being in the movie at all, or even a nod to it, but it might be added to the movie soundtrack just as a kindness.

Either way it goes I will enjoy seeing it with my wife about 10 friggin' times!

I would say that the initial weekend business by Firefly fans going multiple times might be at most $25 million. From the general audience, let's hope for $10 million more. That would equal the production budget recouped in a weekend and would be fantastic on a relative scale. But a movie based on a defunct television show without any major stars is never going to do the $80 to $100 million opening that we're seeing this summer. There's no way it's going to blow the lid off attendance records.

It's also not FOX executives who need to decide to produce more television episodes--it's the 20th-Century Fox studios. I suppose one scenario might be that a Universal-allied network like SciFi might strike a deal with 20th to broadcast new tv episodes or miniseries or movies of the week.

However, from everything I've read in the trade papers, the deal for Universal to get to make Firefly features was that Firefly not return as a television show until that option was up.

So, yes, I think you're being too optimistic. On the other hand, I never thought we'd see a feature film in a million years, so ya never know.

Troy had Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, as well as other big name actors, and it didn't break the 80 million mark over a weekend...it was actually a quite small weekend opening.

so who's to say that Serenity couldn't go the other way around?

Plus, Spiderman came out and it was HUGE its first weekend...and during its release Tobey Macguire and Kirsten Dunst were still pretty much B list actors. And aren't Comic Book geeks (and i mean that in the best of sense) kind of in the same boat as Sci-Fi Freaks? (again, in the best of sense)

Troy was plagued by lots of negative buzz from early reviews and bad word-of-mouth afterward. The section of the audience that might have embraced it, those fans of Homer and Greek mythology were peeved by how radically the story got changed. And I'm not saying that big stars can ensure a big weekend, only that no stars and no presold concept rarely do. Firefly could well be a sleeper hit; I was specifically disputing Kmpec's assertion that it was bound to "blow the lid" off attendance records.

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst may not be A-list, but a heck of a lot more of the general public has heard of them than has heard of Nathan and Gina. And Spiderman is a superhero famous enough that he has an appeal far beyond the narrow confines of comic book geeks. Plus, the effects were fabulous and well showcased in the heavy promotion. Its studio planned for it to be a blockbuster and marketed it as such. Universal has given Serenity a modest budget and is opening it outside of summer blockbuster season. They will obviously be quite happy with a modest success (say a 50-75 million domestic box office).

I for one am pleased that we may well get more Firefly because the first movie isn't being laden with impossible-to-meet expectations.

Fans live in a relatively small world in which we talk to maybe a couple of thousand other people who are as obsessed as we are, and after a while we can lose perspective on just how much appeal our show has outside the confines of fandom.

It'd be nice if they kept a revised or punched-up version of the original theme song in the movie. That said, I'd also like to hear some new stuff on the movie soundtrack. For example, Shinedown's-45, Nirvana's-In Bloom, and Marilyn Manson's-Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These).

About the only thing I really liked about, say, Kill Bill Vol.1 for instance, WAS the soundtrack. The movie itself was awful. (In my opinion, anyway.)

If you're going to be making a Big Damn Movie, don't skimp on the soundtrack!!
