There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Like many other regulars here I have a vested interest in helping to insure Fireflyfans.net continued success. In order for that to happen we need to support Haken in his efforts to rebuild the site to be more secure and reliable. I hope to be able to contribute to that effort and I thought others might be interested in how they can help me do that.

I have just listed several items on Ebay, two of them of particular interest to Browncoats. I don't know how much I can expect to get for them, but whatever it is I pledge to transfer to Haken through PayPal after I get paid for them. One is a brand new copy of the Firefly DVDs, still sealed, and we all know it's a good idea to always have a loaner copy on hand. The other item of interest is a near mint set of the three issue comic Serenity: Better Days. The comics will also come with a bonus for the lucky bidder.

I also listed several other movies, as well as some records and miscellaneous stuff. Check out my items up for auction to see if there is anything else there that interests you.

Thanks!

Wanted to bid but I am on the other side of the pond. Good luck with the sale.

Keep me in mind if you get no takers, I don't mind if they are sent by the slowest/cheapest cart horse available.

Why have they taken the sky from ME

Hey, wow, thanks for doing this, but you really don't have to sell your Firefly collectibles to raise money to help me out. It actually makes me feel kind of bad that you have to give those things up, especially during these harsh economic times for a number of people on this site.

It's okay if members don't donate, I don't expect compensation for working on the new version of the site. It's something that I needed to do anyway and finally got off my butt and committed myself to it. So, really, it's more of a personal project for me than it is as a project for the entire community. You all just get it as a sort of a bonus (if this new version works, otherwise it'll be a nightmare...lol) for being around all these years.

Anyway, the point is, I don't expect a donation for what I'm doing and don't want you to do this if you have to give up something that is valuable to you.

In any case, thank you very much for your efforts (and everyone else's) . It means a lot.

Best,
Haken

Rather than sell your FF paraphenalia, fans can give up their sin tax, like tobacco addiction and alcoholism.

The average smoker spends $100,000 to $400,000 on tobacco in their lifetime.

Heck, we could fund a $50-million remake of Serenity 2...

Honestly, this is the first site I visit when I sit down at my computer. Every time.

I'm kind of a lurker, don't say to much. I just really love the conversation here, lots of interesting people with intelligent things to say. As an original browncoat, I appreciate the love for our 'verse, both real and imagined, that I see here.
I hit the Button.

Thanks Haken

I'm not really giving up anything that valuable to me. I have "Better Days" in trade paperback now so don't need the original comics. I also have other autographed memorabilia that includes signatures from all nine BDHs, Joss and Christopher Buchanan.

While 2009 was not the greatest year for me economically, the drop was not as severe as it has been for others and I've been a good boy in managing my budget. While I could certainly use the money from these two items myself I was going to make a donation to Haken anyway. This is my favorite site on the interwebs and I want to do this. So there! You're gonna get it whether you like it or not.

And that's exactly why I'm doing this too.

Greatest. Website. Ever!

And even if I don't get as much as I hope for these items it has already raised awareness of your "PayPal Donate" button, so I see this as a definite win all around.

Other than an occasional beer I don't drink, and I quit a heavy ten year smoking habit way back in '81. I've pared my budget down so much the only things I can cut out now to have more money would be to give up cable and internet, and I'm not prepared to do that at this time. I've gotta have some entertainment don't I?

I will keep you in mind but there are already several people that are watching these two items and I expect several bids from US fans.

Not that I'd really know, but I imagine building a whole new website ain't an easy undertaken. I'm thinkin' instead of sending our beer money to Haken, he might just want the beer.

Actually I was wondering what 'ware he might need, cause I come across buttloads of it here and there, particularly when stuff goes out of warranty at a mid-largish corp and they chuck it cause it's not cost-effective to hire techs for non-warranty work, you see... and then have to pay this disposal/recycling cost, and soooo...

When some goon shows up in a truck offering to "make it go away" for free, allowing them to save or pocket the disposal cost, no one says a word, they just load the truck.

Where you think RAWA gets all that office equipment, neh ?

Just an idle thought, I don't think the site uses much in the way of hardware, but fronting some software or a security suite would be something I'd not mind doing, especially the latter if it'd help keep the bugbears away.

Not too bad. If anything, it's VERY time consuming because I don't use any pre-built content management systems like DNN, Drupal, etc.. Not that there's anything wrong with using them, but I just find writing my own gives me a level of freedom I would not have otherwise if I had used something built by a third party. Additionally, I would be totally dependent on the third party in terms of support.

I think if I were to equate the number of hours spent to a dollar amount to pay someone to build and support this site, it'll probably cost tens of thousands easy, but being that it's just me, I work cheap.

In terms of FFF.NET 2.0 at least most of the back end stuff will be carried over from 1.0, just need to optimize it a bit more and maybe add new functions to the mix. The real work is really the UI and all the additional pages that will be added to accommodate whatever new features members request.

Just a lot of work.

BTW, I don't drink beer, but a good cup of Joe is always good--especially when I doze off at 2 in the morning, which have happened before, and I fall off my chair. :)

Wait a minute. I thought that Haken, like my 3rd grade teacher, Ms Johnson, simply did this endeavor out of pure love and interest, and not for such tawdry things like personal profit or money.

Do you mean to say.... that's not the case ?

Is Ms. Johnson pretty?

I'll do this for her too.

Alas, I fear Ms Johnson may have lost some of her girlish good looks, as it's been some some 36+ years since.... dear lord. I'm gettin friggn old.

She left quite and impression, you might say.

Granted, she was no Mrs Hale, but I digress.

Per matters more current, I'm glad the notion of payment....err, donation was brought up. Pay pal is such an easy way to go.
