Even though im happy that where getting the movie im a bit pissed off that joss whedon hasnt the balls to call it what it is FIREFLY.What are people really that thick not to know that this is firefly the movie , i mean some peolpe ( non fans ) could claim to being cheated different title same concept...so WHY change the title.Lets hope they do something with the title like bond i.e bond has 007 on his poster then the title.Lets hope its called Firefly SERENITY. After all this, people have paid out for the firefly dvds in america and they knew what they where buying so when it comes to the movie theres no need to change the title. The buffy movie flopped yet kept its name for tv...so why cant firefly keep its name for its own movie?

first of all

1.joss has said himself buffy kept its name because of the way it sounds. cheesy.it dared people to be cool enough to watch it even if they then went on to lie about watching it.

2. its unfair for people to compare buffy to firefly, buffy had its successes as a tv show where as firefly didnt (fox's fault im not being a bastard)

3. the reason he is changing the name of the movie is because although he wants to stay true to the fans he has to attract a mass of new ones. the dvd sales may be through the roof but i dont think it comes close to the amount of people we need to see this movie to make it a hit.

thats just my thoughts...

Hi, I'm New here but thought I'd throw my opinions out.

I think JW will find a way to tie it the movie back to Firefly, afterall the best result possible is the re-launching of the series.

Since Universal Pictures is tied to the SCI-FI channel, and since that channels recents offerings have been so terrible, I'd think everyone involved would want to bring back the series.

At least thats my sincere hope!

There's also such a thing as a working title. Just because it's being called "Serenity" now, doesn't mean it won't change later.

The only constant in the universe is change, my friend.

THe way I look at it, "Serenity" is the title of a movie just as "Our Mrs. Reynolds" is the name of an episode. That's all a movie is (to me at lest). Just one big, epic episode with a multi-milion dollar budget.

It's still the same ol' Firefly we come here to sing praises of until the cows come home from Persephone. No need to get all worked up about a movie title. That is, unless the title is "Fox is better than Firefly," then I can totally agree with being angry.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Calm down Sticks. The title is not meant as any sort of slight to us Browncoats. Maybe you missed this part of the official announcement:

Whedon said the pic will be released under the title "Serenity" to give it some distance from the TV version. "It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series," he said. "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series."

To that end, he said he went out of his way while penning the "Serenity" script to make sure that it is accessible to auds who never tuned into "Firefly."

In order for the movie to be successful, and thereby springboarding into a new TV series as Universal, Joss, and all us Browncoats hope, they need to attract more than just the existing fanbase. Sure there are more Browncoats now then when we started the postcard campaign (boy that seems like a long time ago), but will it be enough to meet the expectations of an eight figure budget and show a good profit?

In order to make Firefly, or "Serenity", successful and get it back on TV, Joss needs to reach new audiences and make them fans. I am okay with that, hell, I would be okay w/ nearly anything so long as Serenity flies again. So long as the cast and Serenity are in the movie, I am there.

Here's another, possibly simpler, answer to the "Why not Firefly?" question, in addition to Joss's quote. Universal Pictures put out a Kevin Costner movies called "Dragonfly" not too long ago. Could be a factor in the naming process that that movie didn't do so well at the box office, and that it was a drama/suspense/thriller.

good point, the dragonfly thing. i think one of my friends rading over my shoulder made the same mistake a couple minutes ago (he wasn't reading very closely, and he's not around much and so is not very familiar with my firefly movie freak-out sessions. and btw, YAY! i have to agree with whoever it was that said that they are happy just as long as the movie is made, no matter what the name.

I like the title. It's the name of the ship, it's also the ironic name of the last great battles and when you see "Serenity", it'll be a nice contradiction to what their life and 'verse is like.

Good point Kasuo, that could (will) be a nice twist to throw in for newbies. Wonder if they'll draw from the deleted scene with Simon and Zoe - I really like that scene. I think Serenity is an excellent title, working or otherwise.

I'm thrilled a movie is being made, and the name isn't that important. With that said, I'm not too happy with the name change.

Firefly wasn't broken and it didn't need to be fixed. Joss wants to distance the movie from the TV show? I don't get it. I wonder what really happened behind those closed door meetings.

I'm wondering how exactly "Serenity" will attract new audiences?

I think the name choice is both good marketing and personal. On the marketing side, Serenity is short, easy to remember, and directly tied to the story. On the personal side, the original pilot was titled Serenity, so it probably symbolizes a re-birth of Firefly for Joss et all. Plus they don't have to come up with a new theme song (the curent one already has reference to Serenity in it).
