I just finished watching and thoroughly enjoyed as I have with all the seasons. John Lithgow was an awesome villian but I was disappointed with the final scenes.. where is it going to go from here...

Who else watches?

Who else loves "Dexter"?

Alas, having no Showtime, I have to wait for DVD release; as such, I'm always a season behind. :(

Can't wait for it to be released, though!

I thought it was suitably shocking, and assures an interesting situation for next season. What happens to the kids? The Trinity investigation? Kyle? Will the Dark Passenger demand an upgrade?

My thoughts went there too. It had to be trinity.. but surely when he was on Dexters table he would have used it to strike one last time at Dex. Thats bit bothers me.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE FINALE!!!!
Seriously spoilery.

Select to view spoiler:

actually, I'm not sure he would've used it to strike back at Dexter. He never really seemed to talk much about what he did at all. He took Dexter to his family home, when he went slightly crazy, but aside from that it seemed like he tried to pretend that he didn't do anything wrong. He didn't even seem to recognise that the way he treated his family was wrong.
He actually said during the final scene "I never took pride in what I did."

Arthur also laughs when Dexter says "I have a family too Arthur." This 'revelation' from Dexter just makes Arthur give a bemused smile, and he replies "You're like a child."

I'm undecided on what he means by "It's already over," though. Does he refer to the fact that he believes in fate, and hence Dexter has already taken him down, and there's nothing he can do. Or is he referring to the fact that their fight is over, with Arthur having killed Rita, and Dexter having caught Arthur.
Dexter even seems slightly puzzled by this line.

All this said, Arthur doesn't seem like the kind of killer who would've had the baby sitting there crying. He's too ritualistic, and perfect. Of course him doing it quickly could've changed things, and his anger toward Dexter could've made him do any number of things differently.

So I'm not entirely sure.

Any thoughts?

They did leave two viable alternates

the neighbor or Quinn the dick either would fit the bill and Quinn would make the most sense to me.

Will Dex be a suspect now? Could be a wild season 5

The child left in the blood though.. was that just a coincidence? who would have known of Dexters childhood trauma?

Exactly.

Select to view spoiler:

It could either be someone who knows about Dexter's childhood trauma.

But also, I'm sure that Rita wouldn't have been taking a bath if she was just popping home to get whatever, so she would've had Harrison with her, so perhaps him sitting in the blood was just because that's where he ended up, rather than him being specifically placed there, in the blood.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Wow, I wonder where they'll go from here.

Select to view spoiler:

I thought, watching it, that maybe they were getting ready to wrap up the series. Maybe Dexter was going to conquer his demons to some extent, stop killing people to be a family man.
Maybe that's still going to happen. The voiced-over thoughts at the end seemed to indicate that now he's sure he can't ever quit, but how is he going to continue now? He has pretty much sole responsibility for three children. He's all they have, aside from their abusive father who's in jail for life, and his parents. What about Rita's parents? They're never mentioned, as far as I remember. So he's going to have to deal with these children now, who have lost their mother and will be dealing with sticky emotions that could very well overwhelm him. What will he do?

I don't know how it's even a question whether it was Trinity. Of course it was Trinity. It would have followed his pattern more to throw her off the warehouse, since she was the 'mother' figure, but his next stage was a bathtub kill, and he wanted to punish Dexter. (Plus a dive off the warehouse wouldn't have allowed Dexter to come home and find her dead, nor allowed the parallel to be drawn between him and his son) When he says "It's already over" I think he was referring to several things in Dexter's life. He was already a killer, he had a need to kill, he couldn't leave it behind for this family, and his family was already broken because Rita was already dead.

On a more general topic, am I the only one who wonders where Dexter gets all his disposable income? For a while, he was maintaining two households in Miami, and he's taken quick trips to faraway places, and money never, ever seems to be an issue for him. He doesn't actually work all that overtime that covers for his habit, so does he just get paid really super well or what?

The bf and I just started watching (netflix on xbox=win), so I'm waaaaay behind the fourth season, but so far we love it. Dexter's internal commentary is just choice XD

Hmm, never really thought about that.

I guess Harrys estate would have gone to Dex and Deb.

The starting annual wage for a blood spatter analyst is $60,000. Dexter has been at it a while so lets say he's making $65,000 a year. Add to that overtime(let's tack another 10 grand on top of that $65,000), and the fact that he doesn't really have a life(outside of his job, and killing people) and he is doing pretty well for himself.
Scientists get paid insanely well for the amount of actual work they do.
His trip to London was probably his only luxury trip expense since the start of the show I believe.
Everything else is just gas money, and work related. I'd say Dexter could pay for everything easily. When he got married to Rita then you get the annual salaries of both, and then they really would be doing pretty well.

SEASON 4 FINALE

Regarding the final episode
I was shocked and disturbed. It really does feel this was the last season of Dexter. Where could they possible go with season 5?
Anyway, I enjoyed the series a great deal, and even if they continue with it, I think I'm done watching.

It would be just too weird without

Don't squat with your spurs on.

I took it as "too be continued." Not only for Dexter but for his son.

Select to view spoiler:

Whomever left Harrison in the bathroom with Rita must have known of Dexter's past. Not sure how much Trinity knew. I'm not sure if he ever found where Dex lived.

But if he found out where Dexter lived I think he would have had just enough time to pull it off. After he showed up at the old apartment and realized Dexter didn't live there, he decided to leave town. The only time for him to kill Rita was between the time he shook down his family for cash and time he picked up the Mustang. My guess is when Dex, realizing Trinity would dump his van and take the Mustang, went to the shop and took the oil cap, Trinity was in the tub with Rita.

It's likely that Trinity put Harrison in the room to traumatize him, just like he'd been traumatized, as a way of getting back at Dexter for trying to kill him the night before.

Rita didn't seem to work much. She lost her crappy hotel job before they got married, then kinda got into real estate, her work in which was never mentioned again after the baby was born. She was either on maternity leave, had cut way back on her work, or had quit altogether. Scientists making a lot of money makes sense, though. It's entirely feasible that Dexter had a large bank account to draw on, though I have to think an impromptu trip to London, then the house and the move and all must have put at least a dent in it.

I really wonder where they will go from here. If the next season starts and all the messy details have been squared away with some kind of cheat, I won't keep watching.
