Rebecca Gayheart, who was originally cast as Inara on Firefly, has signed on to star in Showtime's Dead Like Me.

Gayheart will play the part of a teenager who is accidentally killed and brought back to life as a part of a team of "reapers". These "reapers", apparently, helps people to right the wrongs in their lives before they died.

One must wonder why Gayheart left Firefly.

Haven't we had enough of the Crow franchise, really, without cheap imitations on Showtime?

And is it just me, or do most Showtime originals suck a lot? I've never seen SG-1, though I've heard good things, and I've yet to see Odyssey 5 which is rumored to have potential- other than those, every showtime original show I've seen has sucked ass. And yes, this includes Queer as Folk, which I watched for the first season and a quarter on the premise that it was a queer based show, before having to admit to myself that it was mostly soap operatic soft-porn fluff.

But I digress (severely) my point is, this concept does not sound original or appealing. Though I'll grant you, I've been wrong before. I'm guessing waiting and seeing might be in order...

hmph.

and no, I don't like Rebecca Gayheart! Who does she think she's kidding, playing a teenger? Bug-eyed Noxema peddling freakazoid...

Pandora: Ditto from me. It's not just Crow. This has been done to death. And there's something unhealthy about all these "making it right" shows. Touched by an Angel. Quantum Leap. Lots of people seem to like them, but I find them deeply disturbing.

Other good Showtime original series's that I liked:

Beggars and Choosers (liked what I saw and it got somewhat good critical reviews)
Rude Awakening (though it should be noted that only I liked this one )

I doubt if there is anything ominous about the re-casting. Happens all the time. Actress comes into the audition, gets the part, then when she actually starts working with the cast and crew the chemistry may be off, there might be scheduling difficulties, or creative differences on how to proceed with the character. In brief, the decision was made that Ms. Gayheart was not quite want they wanted, so they re-cast.

Richard Kiel was originally cast as TV's The Incredible Hulk but was replaced by Lou Ferrigno when Kiel was unable to tolerate the makeup. Similarly, Buddy Ebsen was originally cast as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, but a near-fatal allergic reaction to the makeup forced his replacement by Jack Haley.

Lori Petty as Lenina Huxley in "Demolition Man" was replaced after a few days by Sandra Bullock.

Ditto for Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in "Back to the Future;" his replacement, Michael J. Fox, was so perfect for the role and its two sequels that one must wonder what the producers were thinking when they cast Stoltz originally.

...and Tom Selleck was originally cast for the part of Indiana Jones. It was only after Selleck was forced not to take the part for legal reasons (because he was contractually bound to start Magnum P.I.) that Lucas and Spielberg turned to Harrison Ford. Also, Orson Welles was the first choice to be Mr. Roarke in the first Fantasy Island series (now that would have been interesting) before the network forced Spelling to choose Richardo Montalban.

For what it's worth. Having seen images of Morena Baccarin as Inara, I would have to say that Baccarin is the better choice. Somehow, the look of Inara just doesn't suit Gayheart.

Gayheart has this sort of wholesome-ish, pretty girl-next-doorish kind of thing going on. Maryanne. I think Inara is meant to be quite a Ginger, and I think Baccarin has it. She's got these liquid come-hither eyes and a bangin' body. I haven't seen her act or heard her speak yet, but I like what I've seen so far...

FYI,

Gayheart is off the show Dead Like Me. I think she is too wholesome to do anything but a Noxema comercial.

Rebecca Gayheart IS in the show, just not in the starring role. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, give it a try. I think it's intelligently written, and at times downright hi-larious.

It is a very clever show, and the cast is great. Gayheart is really very funny in her role, and she lights up the plasma screen like few others.

Oops! Sorry Willow, you were right. I just read a news item concerning this: Even though Rebecca is in the cast, apparently she's leaving after the 5th ep.
