Well, we have to wait and see if Joss decides to tell us someday in a Firefly movie or even a Firefly series.

But I remember an interview somewhere where Joss was asked why he didn't tell the story of what happened to create this future and he said something to the effect that the characters already knew what happened and why would they tell each other.

The best thing about Firefly is that Joss doesn't come right out and tell us what happened nor do the characters. The history is subtly hinted at in the dialogue between the characters. So in order to pick up on the history you would have to just listen. The only way we know that Earth is around anymore is because they referred to the Earth that was like twice in the 14 episodes.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

My main theory is basically what's probably going to happen.. Earth gets used up. All the fossil fuels are gone, so what happens? A world war over what's left. China and America are the victors, and they manage to get out to space to colonize the other worlds.

That doesn't necessarily mean Earth is still around, though...just that it once was, and now perhaps has faded into a distant legend...

Good. Thanks for the update.

the chinese play in the Heart of Gold tells the story of what happened to earth-that-was. in short, no more ressources and pollution.

Addendum (Theater Show)
A CIRCULAR SHADOW representing Earth-That-Was fills the frame.

NARRATOR
(Chinese)
the Earth up. Barren, she had
little left to offer them.>

Silhouetted shapes appear. SPACESHIPS. They radiate out from the shadow sphere, scatter in all directions. Leave it behind.

NARRATOR
(continuing)
for the first time since the Great
Burn that birthed her, she was
alone.>

The ships are gone now. A wisp of SMOKE wafts off the sphere, creates a snake of shadow.

NARRATOR
(continuing)
were her tears. Acid and caustic,
the spawn of the tribes' rape.
They flowed a century.>

The smoke INTENSIFIES, becomes shadowy FLAME.

NARRATOR
(continuing)
as a blessing.>

The sphere SMOLDERS now, bits of it breaking up and disintegrating under the intense heat.

Man, that's such a subtle means of explaining what happened, I never remembered it. At the same time, how freaking cool... I'm gonna have to go watch the episode now.

No wonder I love JW's shows: so many subtle hints along the way, one seems to pick up a lot of narrative subconsiously.

I'd like to think Gaia wised up and kicked our entire obnoxious kind the hell off her.

"Hey humanity ... AND STAY OUT!"

Earth all pretty again. No trash thrown from polluting cars. No moronic dumbasses spraypainting misspelled blather on every surface. No nuclear radiation. No mercury poisoning.

No scumball politicians colluding with mega-corporations to rape, pillage and degrade their home world.

Just a clean, happy world giving the entire human virus the big

I'd hate to think we finally kill her and move along to the next victim.

"Just keep walkin, preacher man."

As a fan of sci-fi, I like the idea of us colonizing other planets one day. However, the unintended consequence of this becoming a regular thing is that we will probably come to value Earth less and less, and the idea of "sustainable development" will go out the window. Found a cheap way to travel to Mars? Let's strip-mine it! Earth used up? F*** it, let's find another one!

Hmmm, this might explain why Junior Bush is suddenly so interested in a mission to Mars...
