I just noticed that in the scene where Simon is about to try pushing Early off the catwalk, there's no fence/rail on that side of the catwalk, but in all the other eps that I can remember, there's a railing on both sides of the catwalk...am I remembering incorrectly?

I was just watching OiS and also noticed that...but I think at the end of Shindig, Mal and Inara are sitting in the same place, with no railing.

The railing was optional. It is there sometimes, other times not. I used to work at an oil refinery and we had something along the same lines... a catwalk with both sides able to remove the railings by removing the cotter pins holding them in place. I never really understood it, but then OSHA in space prolly isnt much better than OSHA here. For those not of the US persuasion... Occupational Safety & Health Administration.

You're right! In Shindig and OiS there's no railing, but I was just watching Out of Gas and there is definitely a railing there when Zoe and Mal first walk into the cargo bay. Also, in the beginning of War Stories, I remember Mal and Inara are standing on the catwalk and Mal runs his hand along the railing to check for dust as he says, "what, is it not clean enough?". It may just be that the railing and 'fence' (looks like it may just be wires) are removable, but it's not obvious why they would keep putting it on and taking it back off...

I had this whole long post about how when I first saw OIS and noticed the missing railing, I found I was confusing that landing with the higher catwalk that definately has two railings. Thus I thought that indeed the lower wider scafolding only had railing on one side, then I put in OOG and there is no disputing that there is railing on both sides, so I have to go with removable railing as the only plausible answer.

I only fell is all.

I think it's mentioned in one of the commentaries that the railings were removable...the actors were always worried about them falling off when they were leaning on them. This makes perfect sense on a cargo ship, where you're hauling things around...
