One for sure, and then he converted one. Another maybe. And one is interested. So 4-ish?

1 friend hated it.
Another loved it but wouldn't buy it on DVD.
Another friend watched the first two episodes and borrowed disk 1 and 2 of which I haven't seen in the past two weeks.

I'm trying to covert some people at Cantr but I don't think it is working. I have talked to the creator of Cantr (whoms name is Jos Elkink) and got him interested. He said he would have a friend to download a couple episodes since he lives in Europe and doesn't have a Region 1 Player. Another guy at Cantr I have also gotten him interested but he wanted to download a few episodes before he invests his money in and gave him a few suggestions of what to download. Haven't heard back from him. There are a few people that watched it back when it was one tv and thought it was good but they said it isn't worth it to buy it or see it again since it is canceled and they claim Firefly doesn't have the potential to be even a good movie. There is also a Angel fan on Cantr who I have to contend with. He liked Firefly but he doesn't think it is good and he is all pissed off now that Angel has been canceled and he claims it was because of Joss Whedon going to make a Firefly movie. He has begun a boycott of Firefly and he said he is going to make sure that Firefly fails so that Angel can come back.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Let's see. . . six, so far. My wife, son, son-in-law, nephew, father-in-law and brother-in-law. My father-in-law immediately went out and bought the DVD's and I gave my son a set as a gift. My son is away at college and has probably converted ten or so of his friends. In fact, they have a weekly Firefly Night in their campus housing unit, in addition to getting together in smaller groups frequently. I know at least 2 or 3 of the other students have also bought the DVD's.

Explain two things to him:

1) Joss' current endeavors towards a Firefly movie are only related to whether a Buffy/Angel *telemovie* happens. It is unrelated to the series' cancellation.

2) More Joss is always a good thing, no matter the form.

3) If the Firefly movie fails, it won't bring Angel back. In fact, I'd wager that Angel's best chance is for Firefly: TM to be a huge hit; it'll raise Joss' influence with the networks. If the FF movie fails, we'd be lucky to see more Joss at all.

OK, that's three things. But....explain.

In RL, I've only converted three people: Last year's roommate, my mother, and my brother.

Online, TrekBBS specifically, I've directly converted at least 4-5 people, one of whom seems to be as crazy about FF as I am. I suspect I've indirectly contributed to the conversion of several more, as well------I find that if you blabber loudly and longly enough about something, people actually start to listen. ;)

Conversion implies they were loyal to another show (or cause, as the case may be). So I can't really say. But I have turned a few people on to Firefly. I made two fans so far. And their 7-year old son counts, so make that three. The two new fans have each made two more fans of their friends, and each of them made two fans, and this could be going on still. So I can't count how many fans I've "converted"! Could be hundreds by now. :D

I've converted two so far. When my sister first saw Firefly as a TV series she saw about 2 seconds from Train Job, shouted 'This show sucks! Kill it!' and stormed off as only a pissy little 15-year-old can. But when I heard that the DVD was coming out, and implied I would give sexual favors in exchange for that as a birthday present, she said maybe there was something to it. I made her watch 'War Stories' and she was hooked. Said it was really funny. Oddly enough she laughed hardest at the torture scenes. She laughs during war movies too ... watching Saving Private Ryan in the theater with her was rough...

I've also converted an internet friend of mine named Meggan. She is always after me to watch dumb, sophomoric, oddly addictive shows like 'The OC', so we could have something to talk about. I got on her case about watching Firefly so she bought the DVDs and is hooked. When we talk about it I get treated to 'Jayne's so hot, he's so manly, I love a hairy sweaty man' etcetera. Harsh, since I like well-groomed pretty boys like Simon and occasionally Mal, but Firefly's big enough for both of us.

So I have two converts who like the show, but nobody loves it like I do. If I had a grindstone I'd pulverize my DVDs and inject them into my veins ;)

I agree w/ what Lindley said, but would like to expound upon those points.

Boycotting Firefly could hurt the movies chances, which in turn hurts Joss. If Joss does not get the movie made, and it is not successful, his credibility w/ networks and producers is lessened. Now, if Joss has no FF movie, and Angel is cancelled & Buffy is over, he is hard pressed to sell TPtB on anything, including an Angel movie, a Buffy movie, or a revival of the Angel series. Joss may even throw his hands in the air and walk away from it for awhile.

I like Angel as much as the next person, but Angel got years to tell its story, unlike Firefly which Fox completely mishandled. Sure we may all like to see more of Angel, but we have seasons of viewing to enjoy from that series, and not even one complete one of Firefly.

You might also explain to this person, that the success of Firefly equates to success for Joss & ME. If Joss brings in a hit w/ the Firefly movie, and Universal is able to revive the series think of the message that will send to networks. Firefly was thought to be a show going nowhere. The fanbase rallies and the DVD set is put out & sells beyond expectations. A successful movie and a series return would make Joss a genius and it would give him a lot of clout in Hollywood circles to get Angel on the big screen and perhaps return the series to television as well.

Hi all. I've been lurking and finally decided to post. I'm a high school English teacher and not only have I suggested Firefly to all my coworkers in the English department, but last week I offered extra credit to any student who buys Firefly on DVD. This may be a grave abuse of power, but I feel the end justifies the means. So by the time th esemester's over I may have converted 40 people, albeit some by force.

LOL...yes, but if any parents complain, be sure to explain that the student(s) misheard and what you said was they get extra credit for watching and writing an essay on Firefly (of course buying the DVD set themselves makes it easier for them to write a good essay -- and therefore get more extra credit -- than if they have to borrow or rent disks...)

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I've only had one confirmed convert so far, and that is my son. He had not seen any of the series when it was on, whereas I had seen them all with the exception of "Bushwacked." I ordered the DVD set in advance, and had watched everything at least twice by the time I went to visit him shortly after Christmas. Sure enough, he thought it was gorram shiny too, and convinced me to give him the dvds. He says he has converted several himself. I've been in withdrawal since then, but ordered another set the other day, which I should get early next week.

I am self-employed, don't have a whole lot of social contact with other fans around here, and everyone I've mentioned it to has not heard of it before my mentioning it. I certainly want to spread the word, but do not feel safe in loaning dvds to people I do not know well, and can't afford an extra set right now.

I've also written a review of the show for my site, and posted about it on several other SF forums, but don't think I've influenced any that weren't already fans.
