I was wondering if maybe I could get some ideas for Firefly vids from some of ya'll. Usually my vid muse beats me over the head, but I've been gettin' nuthin' lately. I really want to get started on something Firefly related, but I just can't seem to come up with anything I really want to do.

So anyone have any ideas? I'll take song suggestions, theme suggestions anything.

Also, does anyone where I could get good quality episodes downloaded quick? I'm slowly, but surely going the P2P route and its driving me crazy! I know there is one really nice site that has all of the eps up for download (if they haven't been taken down yet), but their format ain't compatible with my editing software. =(

And I know this fandom is rather skittish about vids (or at least from what I've seen) and I'm fully aware of the risks of making music videos, but mine will probably never see the light of day anyway, since I don't know anything about web space and the like.

Anyway, any help would be muchly appreciated.

If you're interested in doing an action vid and have the XXX movie soundtrack, the first track ("Feuer Frei" by Ramstein) might be interesting. It's very energetic and the fact that it's in German means that most people (myself included) don't understand the words - maybe a good thing LOL!! The corus almost sounds like they are saying "Fire Fly" followed by "bang bang" LOL! I can see the Reaver ship entering the atmosphere, opening war scene from pilot with Mal on the big gun, various gunfights, and shots of Sereneity doing full burn - specially in atmo.

Here's a link to a sampling of the song, but it doesn't have the best part, the chorus..."Fire Fly" (aka "Feuer Frei").

Good luck!

Edit: Ya know, the second track (Bodies) has potential too: "...nothing wrong with me...something's got to give...bwaaaaaaaa...let the bodies hit the floor". Can see Mal there...not a "happy Mal", but Mal none the less. LOL!

The entire DVD set is available for download on www.suprnova.org , a bittorrent site.
I might go and try to fiddle with it myself, I'd actually like to try and make a video, though I don't have any experience doing that except for some minor VirtualDub stints.

I wouldn't say that this fandom is skittish about vids. There's close to 50 of them out there. There was the big kerfuffle last year that probably soured a few folk on the whole idea, but there still are people making Firefly fanvids. I'm one of them.

Most vids I've seen tend to not really reflect FF as a whole, rather some excuse to use a popular song (no offense, but I don't think of Firefly when I listen to German death metal) I've always toyed with doing a music vid encompassing the whole show to "Ashokan Farewell" a Civil War-era violin duet, but alas, my mind far outthinks my abilites :)

I'd like to see some Fat Albert cartoons, but with Firefly dubbed over.

Davco92, that's a great idea. I've been working on this for a week already, but I'm having problems. Adobe Premier 5.1 isn't working on my system, so I'm trying to get 6.0, but I don't know...

LOL! I've been seeing this in my head for a couple of weeks now. Not sure what that says about me - LOL. I just think it might be cool for an action video.

Uminoken - I agree, it doesn't really represent Firefly as a whole, but that really wasn't the intent. I could see something by Chris Ledoux fitting well overall, or at least for Mal. Your Civil War idea might be cool too, feels right even though I'm not familiar with the piece you mentioned.

Hmm...switched from German death metal to country & western. I guess my music tastes are somewhat diverse. Browncoats come in many different flavors. :)

My post is on the long side only because I picked a popular song, and wanted to defend why I chose it for the lyrics and not its popularity, so here goes: Elsewhere by Sarah Mclachlan

I love the time and in between
The calm inside me
In the space where I can breathe
I believe there is a
Distance I have wandered
To touch upon the years of
Reaching out and reaching in
Holding out holding in
(this is the only verse I don't see clearly, the only thing I do see is an overview of central planets, border planets, crew ensemble shots?)

I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I’ll defend it as long as I can be
Left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand
(I see Space scenes and Fight scenes, because their heaven is to be out from under the alliance which means living in the rough, which is the price they are willing to pay for this freedom, it may not be others' idea of heaven, but then that is the point of the song)

I know this love is passing time
Passing through like liquid
I am drunk in my desire...
But I love the way you smile at me
I love the way your hands reach out and hold me near...
I believe...
I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I’ll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand
(I see this entire section as shippy, Mal-Inara, Simon-Kaylee, Wash-Zoe, their love is their heaven)

Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free
The mold that clings like desperation
Mother can’t you see I’ve got
To live my life the way I feel is right for me
Might not be right for you but it’s right for me...
I believe...
(I see first River, than River and Simon)

I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I’ll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand it
I would like to linger here in silence
If I choose to
Would you understand it
Would you try to understand...
(For the end I see a compilation of all the characters doing that which defines them as unique and captures what they would see as heaven, for example:
Mal-anything related to Serenity
Kaylee-Serentiy engine room
Inara-In room, bathing scene?
Wash-Flying
Jayne-Guns
Simon-Medicine
River-Dancing or anything from OIS
Book-Bible
Zoe-Hardest for me as her unique quality is her ability to balance her Independence & Military strength with her Femininity, not sure which clip would suit her best.

And there you have it. If I had the expertise I would do it myself. Make sure you let us all know what you do decide to do. No matter what it is I would love to see it. Good luck!

Thanks for the input everyone. Great ideas all!

ZAPHODB: Ya think you could point me towards some of the other vids? I've beem unable to find any beyond the ones hosted on Tash's site and yours (love yours, especially your trailers BTW).

Angeldove: Thanks so much for pointing me towards this song. It is actually along the lines of what I was looking for (especially lyrically which is always the hardest to make fit) I think I'm gonna try this. And even if it doesn't pan out I have a new beautiful song to add to my collection of faves.

You are welcome, and Elsewhere has been my favorite Sarah Mclachlan song since I discovered her. All right, 'I Will Not Forget You' a close second, hmm I think I need to think Firefly and listen to it again.

I look forward to the opportunity to see your vid, I hope you are able to post it somewhere.

Goodluck!

I really think you should do it, Ashokan Farewell is one of my favourite pieces, I haven't played in years but I can still remember the fingerings. If you ever do, please let me know.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Bon Jovi's "Dead or Alive" would be a good song to consider as well.

oddly i actualy think a good song is 'serenity' by godsmack. Could make for a good farewell to firefly bring on the serenity vid now that there is a trailer out for serenity proper that you could get some clips from as well.

I've only heard it once, and it's by a local band with very little available on-line, but I've got to share one. "Fireflies & Bugs" by Ol' Yeller off of their Penance CD. I recall it as being country/folksy/rock-ish, and having lines about watching the Fireflies fly through the sky. I think it could be shiny, but you won't be able to research it on line much.

Also, Jadekadir, please give us a link when that is done!

There is a fanvid made to Serenity, by a fellow calls himself ImEarly, and it is arguably the best fan vid out there, save for maybe another video he made called Call Me. I have both videos on my computer but I don't know where to get them online.

I do not currently own any web space, and Embassy is just being a saint by hosting Serenity for me. I have a pretty fast connection so I basically just upload it, or any of my six other videos on request.

If you end up making the vid an posting it on the net, let me know. I'm working on an archive for Firefly/Serenity FanVids to help spread the love and I'd like to include as many people as possible. I have the LJ link in my Blog here, where you can post the link to your vid. Just an idea.

Songs that I would vid, if I knew how and had time:

"Desperado" (the Eagles; also Linda Ronstadt)
"I Need a Hero" (soundtrack to Shrek 2)

The latter would be soooooo much fun!
