I need a headache cure. Finally had an argument with my teacher today that being told exactly what to do and how to do it is not really 'helping to find my personal creative expression' and I think she got the point, but I'm not positive. She said at one point she'd have to find me a book that would 'help me' with this 'block' I had, which is kind of funny because last night I was hanging out in Barnes&Noble (as I do) and read the beginning of quite a wonderful book by a wonderful photographer, who stressed that creativity was its own force, and that while it could be learned and cultivated, the 'rules' that some people throw around are not at all the way to do it. If I had an extra $50 I would have bought it, and maybe I should anyway, and loan it to my teacher

Library copy? Way cheaper than purchasing. You can always go back and buy it some day when you're flush. Or put it on your wish list.

Yes, MsA, not even elephants stay pregnant forever. You have officially reached the state medically known as "TOBP". (Tired Of Being Pregnant) It's a good sign.

You will be two people again soon. (Still a unit, but two separate entities.)

I'm boiling water, and don't want to burn it. Pasta will go in soon. I'm cooking up a chicken fest. Chicken and mango (Indian spices) in the dutch oven with rice, baked chicken to add grapes and make salad sandwiches, and chicken and mushroom in a cream sauce for the pasta. (Big tray of chicken breast...)

Yes, I can write a book report or a paper. Writing an interesting story with a plot and characters you are *supposed* to love/hate/laugh at is not an innate skill set for everyone. Style can also evade many of us. (Think of a book you hated. Case in point.)

You are the daughter of an author, and have no doubt been surrounded by good literature and immersed in quality work. It may well be true that for you, this class is a waste of time and merely fills a requisite hole in your curriculum, but the poor sap next to you may be having revelation after awakening after amazing shift of perspective.

Or not. It could just suck for everyone.

Hahaha, I heard a story of a woman who went back to college in her fifties and has been battling her teacher, who says science fiction is not literature and she can't write her science fiction story. She's doing it anyway, because the class curriculum states that as long as she shows up and turns something in, he can't fail her.

Hey all,

7+ hours in a car split either side of work day = tired and useless Gee, not at my best today after stupid yesterday.

I do not understand their approach to you PR, part of the act of creating is reacting to things as they change when you do them, very few people are able to plan exactly what they are going to do before hand and execute it as such or at least 18 years of playing percussion and lots of time (but not enough) writing has demonstrated this. In fact almost every time I do something that sucks major balls (rather than just not be very good) is due to me trying to fit a pre-made plan rather than working with what is happening.

I might have been looking at the con pics in other threads but of course can't comment as I don't have pics to pay tithe, nothing to see here... but might be slightly jealous, who knows...

I'd better get back to doing something at work, I'd rather being doing maths revision, I think somewhere in another time my 15 year old self is crying at the man I have become lol!

-_- that teacher needs to die.

I have to agree with peacekeeper on the not really getting the concept of "Creative Writing Classes". My university requires one in order to have a concentration in creative writing for an English major, but most of the people who turn up are people trying to fill a gen ed or who want to see what comes out of it. But you can't really teach creativeness as a form, you're either creative or you're not (IMO). Sure if you have a good teacher it can learn you something about the creative process, but it's not going to magically make you awesome at it. And most teachers (like PR's and the anti-sci fi @_@) are kind of hypocrites for trying to teach it (in my bitter opinion of the class lol). Books can't really help you with blocks, in my experience they just have to work themselves out. Sure reading (recreational reading, not 'self help' reading) can sometimes spark something that'll help you work past it, but forcing yourself out of a block doesn't really work. Of course it's a bit hard when it's a class you need to get through. ><;;

Do you have the title for that book, PR? sounds like a smart guy ;)

But you can't really teach creativeness as a form, you're either creative or you're not (IMO).

In the university courses I took, the point was not to teach creativeness, it was to teach how to write: an explanation of imagery; an outline of various forms, techniques, and processes for consideration and comparison; further education on the various uses of language; theories on how to write for your *audience*; etc. There are huge differences between creative writing, factual writing, and technical writing, for example, hence the differentiation in the course titles. Never once, in my experience or others I know, was a "creative writing" course supposed to be about "how to be creative". As you guys say, you cannot teach creativity, but you can teach ideas to help support and foster the innate creativity. I mean, really, there are plenty of creative people out there who can't write for shit. So, based on what small bit of info I'm reading here, either you guys are misunderstanding the point of the class, or your teacher is. ((shrug))

Yeesh, I'm in a tetchy mood today.
Could have something to do with what appears to be continuous insomnia (for the past... what?... 6 years?).

The result is this long, thin, heavily "aged" pendant:

...which I am currently wearing at work. XD

Inspiration for the piece came from a company called LOCHER'S ( www.lochers.com) -- a company I found in issue #2 of COILHOUSE magazine ( www.coilhouse.net) -- who makes really lovely shirts and accessories. Unfortunately, they are all sold out of the shirt I wanted ( http://www.lochers.com/collection4.html). ((sigh))

HK: See my teacher didn't do that. I liked him and all, he wasn't bad and his techniques for teaching were fine by me (even though at the time I hated him because he would give us ridiculous constraints and expect us to write within them, and I'm a fan of just letting loose and seeing what comes out; worked so far), but he didn't discuss theories or outlines or writing to the audience. He was a poetry guy :P lol. We did do short fiction as well, but not as much. His biggest idiom was "don't tell me, show me." I kind of wish my teacher had been focused on longer fiction, since that's what I'm more interested in. It would've been nice to have one that went along the lines of yours, HK, because mine was pretty much "here's your assignment, these are the topics. pick one, write it, bring it in, and we're all gonna critique each others' work. then you're going to revise it."

btw that pendant is awesome XD I want one.

Well the 'block' she was referring to in this instance was my 'block' about doing things by hand, not a block in my creative process. Now, for my money, art done on the computer is much less stressful (yay for undo!!1!) and also comes out better than most things I can do by hand. In this class, it's being insisted I work with all kinds of materials, which isn't necessarily bad, but when I'm told I 'must' draw something, rather than being able to use the medium of computers and print, it makes me cranky. When I screw up using a pen, I cry and have to start all over again, more than likely, especially when the project is something requiring precision. Anyway, teach thinks I have an unreasonable resistance to such things, and rely too much on the computer. Um, hi? Duh? This is a course in computer graphics and I am in it for a reason. Yes, I love my computer. In an age where they exist, and in which I can do way more on one of them than I can with paint and canvas (not having that particular talent that some people really do) there's no reason for me not to use my most flexible and wunnerful tool in creating art. This is my creative process. I'm working on my eye, and seeing more and more things in more and more ways, and refining how I come up with my ideas so that maybe my process is more, I dunno, efficient, but my creative process is not a pencil. Sorry, it just isn't. For a lot of artists it is or it can be, but I like things to be a little cleaner.

Quote:

Do you have the title for that book, PR? sounds like a smart guy ;)

It's called 'Visual Poetry' and I found it in the digital photography section. Don't remember author name. I should check the library for it, indeed, but I'm not sure they would have it; the poor libraries suffer from lack of funds almost as much as I do, but maybe some caring soul in the industry has donated it.

Kitten, have I told you lately how awesome you are?

Sound advice, actually, even if he didn't deliver it well. It's much less interesting to have something like:
Ron was an accountant. He got up every morning at six. For breakfast he had a bagel. He drove a Plymouth.
than to have something like:
The alarm went off as usual at six a.m. Ron stretched and thought how good his morning bagel would taste. Ready for work promptly at 6:30 as usual, Ron got into his Plymouth and fought traffic to the accounting office.
Both not super interesting, I know, but the point is that the details should be contained within a story, not spelled out in boring, omnisciently told snippits. Straight fact is what makes essays so boring. It's a mistake a lot of writers make. They may have a creative idea, but they talk about it rather than writing a story, which is where techniques for that kind of writing come in. Sorry if, overall, he was a bad teacher of those techniques, but I cannot fault him for drilling the 'show, don't tell' rule.

Hey, if you want some good advice on writing technique, being in the industry, etc...

Ah drawing things by hand. I suck so much at that XD Not much of an artist, but I don't know how a book can get you past that block either, I mean, doesn't being good at drawing take practice?

Does it have to be in pen, or can you use pencil first? :P hell, even animators do that.

Re "don't tell me, show me." : yeah, and I got what he meant, because laying things out all subject-verb subject-verb is boooooooooooring, (I've edited many a peer's stories that have that issue; and you're right, someone may have a good idea, but they have trouble conveying it in an interesting manner) and I try my absolute best not to do that. I think I was one of few people in class he *didn't* say that too (fortunately). And you're absolutely right, the details should be contained within the story ^_^ 's'what makes it interesting

I wouldn't say he was a bad teacher so much as it was more or less a blind 'doing' class without any discussion on how writers convey things the way they do (i.e. technique and theory). Ya know?

It can be pencil first, of course, but the tracing part with the pen doesn't always hold less potential for screwing it up, which still puts you back at the drawing board, so to speak. Sometimes I have to start all over on a computer piece, too, but usually I can just tweak it, and if I do have to start all over, there may be something in the original attempt that I can use for something else, even just a little piece, which can be perfectly copied and pasted without too much hassle.
Yes, being good at drawing takes practice. Which I have done. Really, I have. It is not my strong suit. Things come out all disproportionate and dumb-looking. Give me a camera or a computer (or both!!) over a pencil any day of the week.

I guess my advice PR would be to stick with the hand drawing as best you can and try not to get hung up on how it turns out, you've already acknowledged that it's not your favourite medium so try going with it and seeing how it goes for the experience without holding it up against your best work.

As for creative writing classes, I'm not sure about them but I am thinking that maybe after I get this damn Physics degree in urm, 6 years, I might attack an English one as didn't study past sixteen and I love writing and would like to get better at it, I'm a better reader for my attempts but think I'd be a better writer with a firmer grasp of what I'm trying to ie, more than just v basic grammer as not taught properly in this county any more and reading lots, although reading lots helps. Interesting point made by Graham Lineham (Father Ted, Black Books, The IT Crowd) on Gameswipe (BBC programme featuring fabulous Charlie Brooker) about bad wrting in lots of games (he also discussed some good examples) about how the problem with plotting and story line is caused by too many game writers watching loads of films and not reading so doing ideas and plots without the little details that make a character come to life and have a coherent personality.

Yay workplace fluids! I'm drinking about a bazillion times more water at the new job. (This is not hard, as I used to get through one cup of coffee in a day..)

As I walked out into the parking garage today I could have sworn I smelled winter coming.

The new Diana Gabaldon's out, and I'm waiting for a copy at the library to free up. I need to check on my favorite authors and see who's got something in the offing.
It seems like they all come out with new stuff at the same damned time, then after I glut myself I have nothing to read for three years. I know this is not actually the case, but my perception skews that way.

I'd like some whiskey to put in the cocoa I'm drinking, but I'm out. Of whiskey. Not cocoa.

Gee- you could always put a bag over your head to shield yourself and dim all the lights. See how long it takes anyone to notice. Set up a "cone of silence" and smack anyone who TALKS REAL LOUD near you.

Or just stick your head in the fish tank and get it over with.

I've had headaches that *almost* made me think death might quite possibly be a viable alternative to start considering. But then it stopped and I felt silly.

Migraines. Wacky fun!

MsA, were it not for the "prenatal" part of that post I'd be totally jealous. I feel like someone needs to grab me by the head and flip me like a sheet so that my body reaches maximum extension and makes a lovely sine wave.

Or I could just get off my arse, do some yoga and get some exercise. And put in a bathtub and take a nice hot soak for the first time in over three years. I'm tempted to rent a hotel room some day so I can use a big deep tub.

Sigh.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Yeeowch, those kinds of headaches are not to be trifled with. I think there should be some kind of clause that you can sleep through that sort of day.

Last week I was kicking my heavy bag and my leg slipped. My muscles freaked out and clamped tight. It hurt to walk for two days, and likely would have hurt much longer if I had no one to fix me. If my mom wasn't a CMT, I think I would have died of pain long ago.

Time to go to class. Yay.

GEE

hey all,

fighting through day, for the first time in ages I have found myself bereft of Paracetamol, but coping, I know what SR is talking about as I do get migraines but been a while since I've suffered one.

Thanks for the offer flt but I have to avoid both Ibuprofen and Asprin thanks to drugs currently on, I swear I rattle first thing in the morning.

As for illness, what is it with people and sniffles? You haven't got effing swine flu, you've not even got flu, the fact that you're at work proves you haven't got flu. If you're at work, you have a cold.

anyway, I'm having a fun time manually archiving email from our server as users (it's a departmental shared mailbox) are incapable. Currently managed a reduction of somewhere in the region of 4.5 Gb on the exchange server, I wish I was joking.

Impressed by the sounds of kicking heavy bag PR, the only thing I kick is a football although I seem to have found my shooting boots now.

Anyway, home time, meant to wash up and revise, might sleep for a bit first, try to discover my humanity again!

My wife suffers from cluster migraines. She's had them last for weeks at a time. It's awful. On the plus side, she's found a good migraine preventive. Only 2 migraines so far this year!

I've never heard of cluster migraines. I've heard of cluster headaches, which also suck, and men tend to be more prone to them vs. women getting the bulk of the migraines.

Brain go 'splodey feeling bad.

Work good. 4 week checkup today.

He will outgrow those outfits before he can wear them twice. (Peanuts are scary that way)

I remember thinking "Did this shrink in the wash?" then realizing ALL of his outfits in that size were like that. Yoiks!

HELL'S KITTEN

((sigh))

I am very tired of very many things.
Not the least of which is people.

Women seem to get the "worst of the headaches" because of biology. Kinda like chicks get the "worst of breast cancer". If migraines are problematic, go to your doctor and ask him to set you up with a cardiologist to see if you have a patent foramen ovale. Interesting studies going on linking the two. Or don't. Your choice.

I'm going to go bury myself in complete un-productiveness now.

HUGS Rosie... yeah that's why it was so nice that people bought outfits in a variety of sizes ..( teh advantage of having co-workers who have little kids) so he go some 0-3month, some 3-6, and some 6-9...YAY

Awww HUGS Hk.. I'm sorry frustration abounds... I hear there's a really nice game on cartoon network adult swim where you can kill zombie hookers.

...see what i miss when I drop out of sight for a while? All the fun stuff.

Gee, if you still feel like your eyeballs are gonna explode, do what my husband does and pinch the really good female painkillers from your missus - Feminax Xtra is a good one. You can take 'em with other painkillers, too, and if you put a little caffeine in the mix, it makes everything from your eyes up go beautifully numb for a while.

(yeah, I get migraines. I know they are subsiding once I've either been sick or had a nosebleed. Wacky fun. Not.)

edit: have stayed out of the creative discussion, because I am Not Good with criticism, but hell with it - I think you can teach people how to avoid obvious grammatical screw-ups and you can point them in the direction of how to put a plot and character together, but you can't teach creativity. And seriously, PR - I can totally see your point. If you are a photographer/digital artist, you shouldn't be forced to use a medium you aren't comfortable with.

Ooooooo, one of the only good things about Friday.

I am so full of vitriol for and disgust with people, I nearly logged in here as "hates_kitten_"..... XD Waking up angry is an indication that a vacation is needed. Desperately. Someone get me the fuck out of here.

You can come stay here. It's boring, but it's drama free... plus we have a good supply of Red Bull, Dew, Red Vines and powdered mini donuts... just sayin'... >.> *tempt tempt tempt*

It's a freezin' day, mah peoples, but I has Breaking Benjamin on Rock Band and their new CD. I am in bliss-mode. ^^ But the down part of the day is it's my last day taking care of all the kittens. Have to give up 2 to my bro and sis in law. Saaaaaaaaad. :(
