If this has been discussed before, please add the link.

Any ideas as to why Early's hearing is bad? I thought it was very interesting and added a lot to his character. I also think his character is one of the best I have ever seen on television.

I agree, Early is the best.

I don't think he's hard of hearing. I think he's purely fu*&king with their minds on purpose. He's on the job, he's a fast talker and he's just keeping his prey off balance.

Just my opinion.

I dunno, he looks and talks pretty confused when he replies.

I think Early knows when to play and when not to play. Notice how he didn't play around with Mal or Book.

I would have loved some dialogue between Early and Book.

I think that sometimes he may be replying to what he perceives rather than what is said.

That would have been great. As in: How did he know he wasn't a shepherd?

I still think his ears are messed up. Adds a bit of character to his....uh, character.

According to the commentary, he knew Book wasn't a preacher simply by looking at him- the way he carried himself, etc. They had no common history.

Joss used the word "psychic" when describing Early more than once.

That's a heck of a way to judge someone walking with toiletries in his hand.

Well, he also had been observing them beforehand, while he was still on top of Serenity.

but if you look at the scence where Kaylee sneaks back down the hallway to unlock the crew quarters, she opens doors, walks on metal grating and plays with a keypad that beeps and Jubel fails to notice. hell, Mal crawls up his metal ladder and opens an airlock to the outside and he fails to notice that too.

I would definitely be willing to believe that Early is a little hearing impaired.

However, he could just be totally space-crazy. I'm guessing the guy spends the vast majority of his timne in his ship. That ship didn't look all too big to me. (Early even commented on liking the feeling of openess in Serenity's cargo hold.) If I spent all my spare time flying around up in the Black with only a little bit of tin can between me and space, I'd go nutty too. Up there all alone with probably just enough room for one or two captive bounties (and who knows how messed up they are), staring out into the black oblivion of space....it does things to a mind.

Just my theory though.

I think audio on televion is weird. Take the scene in the Serenity pilot, when Jayne is about to torture Dobsen. Mal says, "You don't have to kill him, just scare him." Jayne says, "Pain is scary." They are only a few feet from Dobsen but he can't hear them, because it's TV Land.

From the script:

SIMON
So you're a bounty hunter.

EARLY
That ain't it at all.

SIMON
Then what are you?

EARLY
I'm a bounty hunter.

SIMON
That's what I said.

EARLY
Yeah, but you didn't say it well.

That last line by Early didn't make it into the episode, but it sort of supports what Davco92 said about Early replying to what he perceives rather than what's said, while in the actual episode it may seem like Early's just hard of hearing.

I think he's in his own little world, kind of like River ("she understands, she doesn't comprehend"). Early is the center of his world, we just live there. Remember his comments about the room being empty? He probably applies the same perspective to people, including after they're "gone". He's playing solitaire with a full deck of cards, it's just that everyone else in the 'verse is playing craps, roulette,... anything that doesn't use cards. LOL! Rambled a bit there - hope that made some sense. River, please come here for a minute - I need a translator...
