Plan to see it this weekend. Looking forward to it. Anyone else seen the short film it's based on: "Live from Joberg"? It's pretty good, and can be found on YouTube (I'd post a link but youtube is blocked at work).

I understand that Peter Jackson likes Blomkamp's work , and wanted further development of the Joburg film for the big screen.

I thought Live in Joburg was cool, but I'm holding out on District 9- not all shorts does a good feature make.

Visually, it looks pretty stunning.

I'm trying to decide whether I want to head to the theatre and un-ass the $ to see it, or wait for the DVD...

I'm really interested in Moon. I'm glad it will make it to the art house theater in our small town!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I saw it this afternoon and loved it. It's not perfect, in fact I can think of at least three plot holes right now, but they aren't big enough to detract from my enjoyment. I write reviews for my own site and will be doing one soon, but I may want to see it again tomorrow or Sunday before I write it.

I recently saw Moon at the local film festival. Definitely worth seeing (and paying for), Sam Rockwell is absolutely perfect.

Need to see District 9 soon, been getting great reviews here in Aust.

Also saw Inglourious Basterds at the festival, and it's a decent film, but don't expect anything absolutely brilliant. I thought it was better than Kill Bill (which I didn't like all that much), but it wasn't without it's problems. Just good fun really.

Also, if you're into documentaries, check out a film called The Cove.

Brilliant doco about the killing of dolphins in a Japanese town. Even if you're not usually a fan of docos, it's excellent.

Just saw it and still taking it all in. I don't really mind some of the minor problems with the story, because the movie is original and trying to say something and I like that.

I loved the way it was filmed. The documentary style grounded it in reality IMHO.

Oddly, and I say oddly because I don't think this is what they were really going for, but I walked out of the movie with this thought:
The worst enemy is the one you create.

Just my general thought on the Prawns and Wikus.

Thanks for weighing in with your comments , guys .

Am looking to see what the consensus is like , but I think we're sort of duty-bound to support original and thoughtful sci-fi films...

That's why I wanted to know the specifics about whether District 9 is such a film...

RIVERDANCER

Fugitive/refugee/war movie, with space aliens. A rather overt commentary on racism, prejudice, the brutality and senselessness of relentlessly pursuing conflict, and what happens when the shoe is on the other foot.
I thought the execution was pretty good. It was... realistic. By realistic I mean it didn't pull any disturbing punches. The dialogue was pretty sub-par (which is also kind of realistic) and the science... well, the science was bad. I'm sorry, it was bad. Nothing in the 'science' of the fiction made any kind of sense. Sometimes the shocking behaviors or disturbing images made me forget that it didn't make any sense, but most of the time I found myself pondering, "How does that even work?"
I'm still not sure if I liked it. There were moments I was biting my nails and glued to my seat, and there were moments where I actually wanted to leave. Some people enjoy movies that create a serious response, like you've been smashed in the head with an emotional two-by-four. I don't think that necessarily makes for a good movie, though.
It put some unique spins on an old idea, but I don't know if that makes it creative sci-fi, or if it was just kind of creative to take this concept and make it sci-fi.

Maybe not totally original or creative, but in comparison to what we usually get in the genre this one has a lot to recommend it.

I just can't believe it was made for only $30 million! That looks like at least $150 million worth of stuff happening there!
It's already made $37 mil on this opening weekend!
(I'm waiting for my movie buddy to get some time off)

Been anxiously awaiting word on it myownself; the trailers definitely intrigued me, but so many things turn out to be a disappointment. Everything I've heard so far, tho', is promising.

I usually wait for DVD, but am getting more and more tempted to shell out the "scudies" to see it on the big screen; think it might well be one worth it.

Thanx for the reviews all, it helps!

I like the opening to the review. I don't want to read more until after I see it.

It is very impressive for $5m. Our feature is $2.4m and Hollywood doesn't even consider it low budget- they consider anything under $8m micro budget!

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

"science" notwithstanding, District 9 was an excellent movie IMO.

I rarely see movies first run, but this one I chanced, and I don't regret it. Besides, our boys at Zoic did the cgi work, so y'know, supporting them is cool, plus I think there was at least one part of their work in this inspired by Firefly. :)

Tenthcrewmember, are you referring to

Select to view spoiler:

the way the command module's engines rotated into takeoff mode like Serenity's do, or the outline of the command module's docking port somewhat resembling Serenity's general outline?

Maybe I just imagined both similarities, but I didn't know for sure that Zoic had anything to do with this until I purposely watched the credits the second time I saw this in the theater the other day.

Edit: I guess I didn't imagine it, since others state it more clearly in this thread I missed: http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=8&t=39570

Yeah, I saw it twice, first run. I almost never do that anymore. Really enjoyed this movie, and I hope we can look forward to a District 10 in around 3 years. :)

Yes, Cellardoor, yes I am. :)

I will catch this movie again in theaters.

To date I have seen the following movies more than once in theatres:

Star Wars (the original!) (3)
Ghostbusters (2)
MiB (4)
Serenity (9)
Gladiator (2)

So suffice to say, I don't do it often, which means when I do, it's worthy of checking out.
