Hello Iremisst:

I wanted to scream to the heavens when "New Amsterdam" was canceled. I guess at my age, 57 years, I have gone through this many times and finally getting to except that I must be different, because I watch unpopular shows. I should be more mainstream and watch "Survivor" and "American Idol". I just cannot do it.

So get it out of your system and know you are not alone and also that another show is being developed that will draw you in. They may not last long, but give me 14 episodes of Firefly over multiple seasons of all these so called popular programs.

Here is hoping the next show that grabs your enthusiasm will have a longer stay.

Thanks, Traveler

I too, find it impossible to watch reality shows and that's why this burns my buns so much.

Also, me & hubby could watch it together and nobody fell asleep...

It's just another one of those things in my life that makes me feel so...impotent, for lack of a better word. I've got soooo much of that... And really, that's what attracted me to that show to begin with, nothin' like a theme song more akin to a battle cry-FIRE IT UP! And, ya just never knew which FF star would show up next.

Not to mention, it just takes me so long to connect with any kind of show I know it will be years before I find anything else, *sigh*.

And please, dear Buddha, stay away from the mainstream, it gets stupid in there !

Sorry you lost a show you like, but I have to ask, why would FOX have anything to do with the cancellation of a show that was on CBS?

That would be the same CBS that canceled "Joan of Arcadia".

My heartfelt condolences as well - programming is a harsh mistress - but ECG's question also occurred to me...?

Fox produces The Unit, CBS runs it...

Tell the truth I'm not completely sure CBS didn't drop it but I didn't find anything that said whodunnit so, given Fox's crappy track record and the fact they sold it to another station- yea I'm runnin' with them as did it...

(This is the point where you all jump on the angry bandwagon just cause they cancelled FF...)

Seriously, though- what is wrong with Hollywierd? Why can't they do the one more episode and finish up series instead of leaving 10 million people hanging? I gotta think that last episodes get fairly good ratings and isn't that where networks get their moneys?

IS it that we as a people have such small attention spans (or the Hollyweird execs) that we can't be bothered to stand up and do something about it or are we so used to being screwed over that nobody cares? Is TV important or not? Should I turn it off now and learn how to whittle? If somebody ripped out the last chapter of a good book wouldn't you find that person and beat them senseless? How come they were able to resurect Star Trek years ago and we can't do stuff like that now? Where do I pacify my need to blow sh#t up and see people who deserve it get what's coming to them??

Why do my questions create more questions?

Where are the answers people??????and where's my happy pills, I NEEED my happy pills!......

I can't stand the "reality shows" either. I've just about given up on the big networks, except for Castle, Dollhouse and Chuck. So cable and DVDs are the way to go.

Give True Blood a try. The first season is out on DVD and the 2nd is currently running on HBO and it has already been renewed for a third. And there are 9 books out there to base the remaining seasons on.

There's a psychic blond waitress (Oscar winner Anna Paquin), murder, vampires (2 extremely good looking ones-Stephen Moyer (a broody Mal type) and Alexander Skaarsgard,(the Viking bad boy type), lots of sex, blood both vampire and human, shapeshifters, and a plot worthy of any soap opera with triangles, angst, fluff and even humor.

Burn Notice and Royal Pains on USA are also both very good and Psych restarts soon.

Just got back from Washington, DC myself. Back to work tomorrow.

Just found an interview with the 3 main stars talking about the show. Don't be put off by the accents. Instead of his British accent Stephen Moyer does a marvelous northern Louisiana soft drawl and Anna Paquin (they are a couple in real life) also does a really authentic accent. BTW she's a Kiwi (New Zealander).

Don't confuse 20th Century Fox Film Studios with the FOX Television Network. Yes, they are both owned by the same corporation, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., but they are completely separate business entities.

The FOX Network canceled Firefly, but 20th the studio is the one behind the release of the Firefly DVDs, so they are still in our good graces. Any studio can sell any of its shows to any network that is interested. That's why you can see a Universal produced show like House on FOX, and a 20th Century Fox show like The Unit on CBS.

Thanks for the info... sorta.

I don't even really care who made it... And it's not like little ol' me pointing fingers at people who I'm sure consider their viewers to be akin to the buzzing of just so many flies is going to have any affect whatsoever... besides if you are an exec in this country you have most likely committed various sins "en grosse" or are going to and so are completely diserved of a few finger pointings, for good measure , but you're missing the point and that is

I AM ANGRY!!! I want to rant, and You my good sir are getting in the way of a perfectly good old fashioned Irish Rant(you know the type where we blame the British for certain Potato Famines even though they may or may not have had anything to do with it)

Oh and by the way, everything in this country is owned by the same few freaking corporations so wether you jab at the toe or the eye of the monster is inconsequential....

Also ecgordon, do you work in the legal industry?

Nope, not in the slightest, just thought I would point out that in this particular instance your anger seemed to be pointed in the wrong direction.

The main reason I don't hate FOX the way many other Browncoats do is that they aren't any worse than any of the other networks. Over the many years I have been watching television, all of them have screwed me out of great shows time and time again.

So, why do we keep watching? What's the point?
Are we hoping that our show will be the lucky one that actually gets an ending? Just masochistic? Fascination with a temporary circus? So shallow we don't want to think about the way they constantly screw with us? Don't want to be the only one with nothing to talk about 'round the old water cooler?
All of the above?

Are the people that come here still in love with FF or just have a serious problem letting go? Are we the only ones that get it or the only ones that don't? Is this just our little way of exercising control over our ultimately powerless little lives?

See, you think your brain won't shut up, try being me........

I can't answer for anyone else, but I am still in love with Firefly, probably more so now than ever before, and I can't forsee that changing anytime soon.

As for why I keep watching television, I have to paraphrase the old adage, "Better to have watched and lost than to have never watched at all."

ok, I have an idea...

I'll start my own alphabet soup group. How do ya like P.E.E.S. -People for the Ethical Ends of Shows. Get people to boycott channels that don't guarantee finishing episodes.

Or how about
Stop Hollywood from Interrupting our TV...
wait, I don't think that one will work...

See, if you were a part of my group 10 years ago Firefly would still be on the air...
or banned completely!

I'm on the same page as ecgordon. I love Firefly, probably always will. Serenity remains my favorite movie despite some movies since that have tried to steal my heart away.

I've learned to love shows again and again though. The ones I've lost have faded with the excitement of a new one too. While the final eps of BSG finished out, Firefly was the farthest thing from my mind. While I'm trying to finish up Dr. Who with my beloved David Tennant I've not thought about Serenity at all.

Stories come into our lives and go out of our lives and more arrive. It's the nature of our lives. We gain, we lose constantly. It's learning to love the moment that makes it easier. Value what is here now, turn loose and move on. Where tv is concerned...it's a veritable garden out there.

There's True Blood as ncb suggested above. Great show! There's Fringe, there's the USA shows, they're awesome. There's Dr. Who, Torchwood, DollHouse, Chuck, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Supernatural, so many more I can't name them. There are new genre shows coming next season too.
A plethora of 'em. If you ask me it's delightful.
So much to choose from and fall in love with.

Sure there are horrible reality shows, sure they get more attention, but our networks ( including British ones ) keep making genre shows for us to enjoy. I'm grateful.

FollowMal, thanks for trying, but let me just say that I know we've all got problems- you outta know I've got serious abandonment issues and an unlimited supply of rage, so moving on (no matter how dear and fluffy that sounds)just ain't happenin' in my little end of the 'verse. Someone screws with my happy place I take it personal and to my grave. Just the way nature has made me...

And yea, there are plenty of passable shows if that's what you're lookin' for, but I'm looking for the ones that take me there, which I can only count on one hand. Fortunately, until FF I was lucky enough to get an ending for all of 'em, and I didn't care HOW they did it. Besides, is an ending to a d*mn tv show reeeeally askin' all THAT much...

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.(Or your favorite show for that matter!)
