I just watched "War Stories" with my husband. He paused the tape for the co-star credits at the end, laughing that they had a part listed as "Torturer".

Then I noticed that there was also a part called "Vanilla Husband". Now I *do* know what the connotation of "vanilla" is, but we couldn't think for the life of us who this Vanilla Husband was. Perhaps one of the "middle men" was husband to another?

Our only thought is that the man we thought was the bodyguard of the Counsellor that Inara had as a client was actually her husband. If that's the case, however, I must say that my definition of "vanilla" is far broader than that of the Firefly writer's. Simply being attracted to the same gender hardly disqualifies one as "vanilla". Seems like you should have to have far more exotic tastes to compare to than same-gender relationships to bring up the term.

Thoughts?

The term " Vanilla " is used in spanking circles to identify a person who is not " into " spanking and is an extension of the term as applied to those who do not engage in " alternative " sexual practices . Spankophiles are generally referred to as being " Chocolate " ... "Vanilla Husband" is actually a term used by BDSM folks to describe their mates who are not into BDSM - especially with the connotation that they are "plain and boring" as in vanilla.

"Vanilla" currently doesn't have any meaning towards an attraction with the same sex.

The councilor's "very vanilla husband" (who was unaware of his wife's consorting with a Companion) appeared in a scene cut from the final episode. As I understand it, if an actor films a scene that isn't used, they still have to be credited.

Here's the missing scene from the script:

http://www.average-bear.com/firefly/109.html

EXT. COUNCILOR'S HOUSE - NIGHT

The idyll of a lavish country house, to establish.

INT. COUNCILOR'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Inara waits in the foyer of this opulent home, uncomfortable about being here. The Councilor is sitting, a bit blindsided by Inara's presence. Imperious -- but also a bit nervous.

COUNCILOR
This is an unwarranted imposition.
You are in my home. It belittles
both our stations to --

INARA
A man will die, horribly, if I do not
act. I apologize for my conduct, but
as a member of the world council you
cannot be unaware of what Adelai
Niska is.

COUNCILOR
His skyplex is beyond our
jurisdiction. I really must ask
that --

HUSBAND (O.S.)
Sweetie, we're looking for
Maynard's elephant...

The councilor's very vanilla HUSBAND enters with a young boy, their son. The Husband sees Inara as he kisses the Councilor on the head. He regards Inara with benign irritation.

HUSBAND
We're taking solicitors at the house?
I thought you promised...

The councilor blanches, moves to speak --

INARA
Forgive me. I imposed on a mutual
acquaintance for the audience. I
appreciate your position, Councilor.
Goodnight.

Inara, now getting the Councilor's coldness, exits.

EXT. COUNCILOR'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Inara descends the steps to the house.

COUNCILOR (O.S.)
Inara --

Inara stops as the Councilor approaches.

COUNCILOR
You had me in an awkward situation,
you didn't press your advantage.

INARA
I'd never take advantage of a
client's confidence.

COUNCILOR
I... I appreciate it. I'm just sorry
I can't do more to help you.

INARA
(temper rising)
Then do more -- help me. The Council
can claim jurisdiction over Niska's
Skyplex--

COUNCILOR
A year ago, maybe, but Niska's
become... he's bought off most of the
Council. I'd be in the minority and
on my way to the grave. I wish --

INARA
(leaving)
I haven't time to wish.

COUNCILOR
I thought Companions weren't allowed
to take lovers.

Inara stops one last time.

INARA
He's not my lover.

COUNCILOR
He must be an extraordinary captain,
then.

Whooogah!
Why is it the most tantilizing bits of information end up on the cutting room floor? Hmmmm, this could be the real reason Inara decided to leave the ship. She loves Mal - Mal loves her. It would be a deeper level of hell to know that they cannot be lovers no matter how deeply they love.

Whoogah!

I don't know what it is, but whenever I see "D/s" it cracks me up. Oh, I know what it is, "s" is submissive to "D" even when written. Hehehehe. Funny

*puts on teacher glasses and clears throat*

-ahem-
"D/s" is terminology in the BDSM lifestyle. The names of Dominants (or "tops") is capitalized, indicating their dominant role in the lifestyle or a relationship. The names of submissives (or "bottoms") - for a particular D and in general - are given in lowercase, indicating their submissive role in the lifestyle or relationship...

From the dialogue it seems the husband actually know or at least thinks that something is up - but disapproves of it ala 'but I thought you promised'... hence "Vanilla"

Actually, the 'you promised' refers to the Councilor's 'solicitors', of which the clueless husband believes Inara is one (presumably coming by to ask for some political favor, etc.)

In the context of this script, I believe 'vanilla' just means something like nondescript, boring, normal, or traditional

Wow, now I understand Kaylee's reference later about Inara sending a wave, I was always like why did Inara leave the ship? Without that context one wonders why Inara didn't send word to the counciler, but now is all explained.

Um, I'm lost. Uh, I'm Angry. And I'm Armed.

Uh, guys, yeah, I know what "vanilla" means and I know that it has nothing to do with the same gender relationships. That's why I was confused at first when it was applied to the "husband". There didn't seem to be anything BDSM related to the Councillors tastes, which is why it confused me at first and I didn't know to whom it was referring.

In the shooting script, there is a scene where Inara goes to the Counciler's house and requests help for Mal, getting him away from Niska. Her door is answered by the counciler's husband, who apparently does not know that sometimes his wife likes to relax with another woman.

Hence my guess is that Vanilla Husband is married to the Counciler. The scene was shot, and cut, but not saved, nor was the credits scrubbed.

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Anyone else wondering how Astriana came by that knowledge? (j/k Astriana )

I think that deleted scene would have added a lot to War Stories and would have helped to build the storyline of the Mal/Inara dynamic since Inara was willing to go to her client for help.

Ummm... I read a lot of books and talk to folks... Yeah, that's it! Reading and talking!

Seriously, I have a few friends who live the lifestyle and are generally open enough to answer my "stupid questions."
