I just started reconnecting with classmates I hadn't seen in 27 years through Facebook, and it's been kinda awkward and, in one case, a complete shock.
I was starting to think that, if you haven't seen people at least every 5 to 10 years, you should just let 'em go for good.

Then I saw "Science Fiction" listed as an interest for one of them, so I had to ask "Did you ever hear of Joss Whedon's 'Firefly'?"
Oh, he was all about that! Firefly & Serenity are 2 of only 5 DVDs he owns! He also watches any show with Firefly alumni (Chuck, T:SCC & SG:A).

I saw that another classmate had taken the "Which Firefly Character Are You?" quiz, and so I PMed her with "Browncoat, are ya?"
She readily copped to it: She'd even named her cat Kaylee!
She had quite a bit to say about how she loved the series and the movie, so I told her about the Can't Stop the Serenity event near her this Saturday, but sadly she can't make it.

This all is just proof positive of the bonding power that Joss wields: The sense of family amongst fans of pretty much all his shows is very strong, but Browncoats are a whole level of magnitude beyond that!

I mean, I have not had any contact with these people for an entire generation, but the mere mention of Firefly perfectly bridged that gap.

Haha, thats great!

I just found out recently that my grandparents, whom I don't talk to often, are major Browncoats. It was crazy. They gave me their copy of Serenity and everything. They told me the only reason they bought all their blu-ray stuff was for Firefly and Serenity on blu-ray. It was crazy.(Though, I'm about to do the same... with some luck)

But, it definitely made me closer to them and bridged that gap. So yes, the man is genious.

Great story CLJ

It reminds me of a story of my own. We also have a cat named Kaylee. Fact is we’ve had several cats at one time or another and they’ve all had the names of our BDHs. I will advise anyone though that naming a pet Wash may seal it’s doom……yes our poor dear Wash cat has met with demise. No it didn’t get a little piece of wood staked through the heart but it did get run over by a purple Saturn (if that means anything)

Very good story!

I resisted the FaceBook craze as well, for a variety of reasons, but much had to do w/ what you said, if you've not kept up w/ folk in 5+ yrs or so, how much do you really KNOW each other ? Well, I've dabbled in FB, and though none of my friends / family are what would commonly be referred to as 'Browncoats', some have commented that they at least like the show. Which is nice, I suppose.

No great connection stories from long lost friends or acquaintances, but it's good to know those things do happen.

The T.Rex they call JANE!
