According to IMDB.com, everyone has a last name except Sheperd Book. Maybe Book is his first name, maybe it's his last name, I don't know.

We all know Mal Reynolds, the Tams and Jayne Cobb, but was Kaylee's, Wash & Zoe or Inara's last name ever used?

Oh, and while you're on names I've been meaning to ask: do y'all think "Wash" is short for "Washington"?

Not sure about the spelling of Kaylee's name but in Shindig they announce her as Kaywinnit Lee Frye I think.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

In Shindig they announce Inara Sara with Atherton Wing.

Shindig also gives us Inara's last name of Serra. (And I see someone beat me to it)

I always assumed that Book was the Shepherd's last name, but that it is an alias.

I remember seeing Wash and Zoe's last name somewhere, but it was the same since they are married. Zoe's maiden name remains a mystery.

Kaylee's full name is given when she is "announced" at the ball in Shindig. If memory serves me correctly it's "Miss Kay Wyneth Lee Frye and escort". If I get a chance I'll watch that scene later today and double check. Also, and I could be completely wrong here but I seem to recall seeing somewhere that Wash's last name was Warren.

Or, to give him the benefit of the doubt, a religous name taken when he joined his order. (And a very Chinese name it is, too, actually--I just met a Chines guy whose parents named him "Shu", book.)

It's Kaywinnit Lee Frye. If in doubt, check the captioning.

There used to be a thread over Wash's name, something about his real name being Jerry Lee (I don't know what's up with that).
imdb.com had his name listed for Firefly as 'Wash' Warren and Zoe Warren

It makes sense to me that it could stand for Washington, though.

imdb.com gives all of the last names, I was just wondering if it had ever been used on the show. It maybe something that would introduced later.

SERENA,

I got your email but dunno how to respond to your question except to do so here. My answer, which won't make a lot of sense to others here, is :

No, Serena, I had not heard what you asked about and can shed no light on it. I did hear that he had been captured by
another group, not the U.S., and was handed over to the U.S. by that group.

To be sure, we are lied to on a regular basis by the U.S. media and by our
beloved government. It gets depressing, I can assure you.

All best,

.........Ruxton

That reminds me of an ad I saw in a comic book once. In this ad, Spiderman was interviewing Wolverine and the beginning of the exchange went like this:

Spidey: Is Logan your first name or your last name?

Wolverine: Yup.

Heh.

No power in the 'verse can stop me.

There are a lot of shows that only use one name. Wilson from ToolTime, McGyver and Quincy are the first ones that I can think of.

Book does sound like an alias that he might have recieved when he joined the abbey. It's a good way to leave your past behind.

Reminds me of the story of Slim Pickens. He wanted to ride in a rodeo and his mom wouldn't let him, so he signed up anyway. The rodeo guy told him there wasn't much but slim pickens left and then asked him his name. The rest is history.

Book may have walked into an abbey after the war and when they asked him his name, he said the first thing he saw. The rest is history.

The Washburn comes from a Nathan Fillion posting on the OB. There is no cannon reference to to Wash being short for anything and no cannon reference to Warren. The Jerry Lee reference is from Our Mrs. Reynolds, as in "Nice work, Jerry Lee" with inexplicabe camera cuts to Kaylee.

Interesting. I never watched it with the subtitles. There have been long threads about kaylee vs. kerry lee vs. jerry lee with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. I'm holding out for the movie to get the final word on Wash's full name.

It could have been a slip of the tongue from Nathan an almost reference to Jerry Lewis.

The only reason I say this is because everytime Alan makes a funny face while flying or whatever, he refers to himself as Jerry Lewis in the commentary.

Maybe some of the cast called Alan that as well?

I'm trying to remember if there were any names on patches or uniforms or whatever in the war scenes. I'm going to go back and look. It seems if Zoe does have an official maiden name we'll find it in a war flash back.
