I know I'm not super active here (I tend to keep to myself), but I had an odd/possibly shiny idea last night after watching an episode...

How awesome would it be to have Blue Sun water bottles or soda?!

I looked around for a while to see if anyone was already doing this, but couldn't find anything, so I started looking up companies that do private label bottling. There aren't really any soda companies, but there are several companies that do water branding, and a few who will do it in smaller quantities. The pricing is fairly (comparatively) high unless ordered in bulk, but it does get reasonable in larger quantities.

Is this something anyone else would be interested in? If someone's already doing it, please let me know who/where so I can get some!

As far as legalities go, I assume Fox(?) owns all the rights to Blue Sun (I seem to recall this being discussed on multiple occasions, but can't recall where), but I don't really anticipate any legal issues - people (who, you know, aren't associated with Fox) sell Blue Sun shirts, etc. all the time, and it would be for private use anyway.

Thoughts? Comments? Is this a fine fahng-tzong fung-kwong duh jeh?

Technically, Fox owns the rights to the Blue Sun label like it owns the rights to the Firefly theme song. So technically, what you describe is still bootlegging.

Of course, though technically it's not legal, that doesn't stop everyone else from using the logo.

I don't think Fox is producing any of that sort of fan gear, so I really don't see any victims here, unless the private label/bottle company you work with somehow ends up being a health hazard or something equally unexpected.

However, you might want to check first if anything like this is produced in a more official capacity. You probably don't want to take money away that could go towards the revitalization effort... Or that you could be sued over.

Other than all that, I do think it is a good plan, and that people would buy your product.

Well I wasn't really thinking of "selling" it, and if it did end up working like that, I'd end up donating any profits to Equality Now. I was thinking more of a "group buy" type thing.

I just thought it would be shiny to have it myself...walking around drinking Blue Sun water :P But I figured this might be something that a lot of people would want, and it'd likely be quite a bit cheaper if it was bought in bulk.

Is it technically still bootlegging if it's for private use? That seems like a super gray area...if I print out a picture of the Firefly logo and put it on my wall, is that illegal?

There is an official Blue Sun shirt, but it comes on the heels of thousands and thousands of bootlegged t-shirts. It may be one of the highest illegally printed shirts of all time. That said, there are numerous fan created Blue Sun labels throughout the internet. I've used Blue Sun Whiskey bottles from Propcircle.com and I've made my own Blue Sun soda bottles for parties.

The trick is not to make a profit of any kind whatsoever.

I love this idea and think it’s great T3HMOTO!

But, just as has been stated, They are owned by the company. I have a feeling that if it became too successful you’d be hearing from them…..and not in a pleasant, SHINY way.

I do like the idea though and would really get a kick out of drinking “Blue Sun” water at work.

Well that's why I thought a group buy thing might work better, but I was hoping more people might chime in and let me know if this is something they'd be interested in.

If I get 20 people saying they all want a case or two, I could find a company, get a design made up, have a test bottle sent, get preorders, and then put in a bulk order (a few of them say they'll ship to multiple addresses too). From what I can see, the prices tend to come down a fair bit after about 10 cases (although hell, I'd probably want 10 cases my own self :P)

This thread is sort of my way of gauging interest - even if only a couple people say they want it, we still might be able to do something.
