As a male/Female member of American culture, what do you feel is one of the biggest threats facing our next generation?

I have a TON of ideas on this one. Just wondering what y'all think.

I'll go with Kelkhil but add just a general lack of responsibility and a lack of seeing the long term effects and consequences of behavior. I'd say all generations faced this to some degree, but the problem , as I see it , comes from the fact that this new generation is being raised ( more so than any other generation) in single parent, young mother households where there is little time or energy left for the actual raising. This leaves the schools and daycares to try and instill values, work ethic, and responsibility in the kids. Not that these places aren't trying, but every step of the way they seem to be undermined by short sighted parents who are exhausted and done in by the earning of money enough to feed and put a roof over the kids and who will give in and give the kid anything they want so as to get some peace. This negates all they are taught about delaying gratification and earning what you get. It also further enhances the sense of entitlement that has spread so pervasively. I'm entitled to money, compensation, royal treatment, etc... just because.

I've recently seen several girls who were under 18 pregnant and totally nonchalant about it becuase they can get housing assistance, WIC, food stamps, and welfare so it's no big. Or even older women who chose to go wtih assistance instead of jobs because it's easier and why work?
Hey I'd love to stay home with the baby, but we have bills and a house and all so I'm headed to work... just how it is. I just can't fathom giving your kids a life of poverty not because you work really hard, but don't make much, but because you'd rather take handouts and sit on your butt than get up and work to give your kids a good life.

Well eventually being outnumbered will cause a crumble since the ratio of working to non working has to be 2:1 or more to support it.. soon it'll be the rapid decrease of benefits and once again,as always, the kids suffer for the adults failures

I think MsA nailed it with the sense of entitlement. I know far too many people who just think that they deserve money or even a good paying job. I know a guy recently who took 6 years to graduate and had the bare minimum of C's to graduate after retaking many courses and he's shocked that employers aren't throwing job offers at him. What makes so many people think that they don't need to put effort into anything these days? One of my friends told me a bunch of her friends said "I wish I knew this recession was coming because I would have saved then.". Um you save for the unknown. What's wrong with those people?

Though I really think this is an American attitude and not pervasive across the globe. I'm pretty sure China and India are raising a generation of people who are go getters. Which means our economic outlooks is going to stay low for years to come. Which is just swell when you think of how badly our bailouts are selling out the future of this country. Argh!

Of course it didn't help as much as intended, but our good President offered more money to people on unemployment. On one side I know people who are out of the job market because of disability or lack of jobs near to their field of study/skill set. On the other hand I know people who should swallow their pride for fast food jobs and the like to support their families. It feels like we've reverted to the old manual crank start method to start our hybrid cars.

What's funny is the positive impact on people who have a lack of education and legal citizenship. People on the Reservation are thriving despite the number of manual labor jobs still open to those who are on unemployment. I think I've seen more people here working than ever before. And the yard care companies in town that hire illegals are doing very well for themselves.

I offered to help my bud John finish some drywall in his house. Its cool because once he gets it done most of his house will be done. He is in the same spot I was; cabin feaver due to being isolated in one room for most everything. Now that they've split the house and built a few rooms his whole family is much happier.

I've been working on markers so much that I almost feel like there is nothing to do but to work on them. Seems like I need to just paint a lot of people to make myself happy.

You don't want a surprise? I'd totally want a surprise.

Though in the end I can make a case for either. I think a baby girl would be fun. Mainly cause I know I'd be one of those Dad's who gives Daddy's little girl anything she wants. The problem there is once they hit like 14 I'd need to go into like super spy mode to try to keep raging hormone guys away from my little girl. So, at that point I'd rather have a boy and just let him go annoy other Dads

I began to think back on past ponders and how some of my answers have changed in the past few years. I've only been a member of this forum for three and a half years. In the six months prior I had done considerable lurking and found this to be the most appropriate forum for me.

In that time many people have came and gone. In some cases it was better for them to leave than to stay. In other cases, let's just say that they should have stayed while others rightly should have left.

What I'm getting at is the ponder of where this is all going. Similar to stating "Where is this going" during a romantic relationship, this seems to be a hard thing to ask and an even harder thing to answer.

So for anyone who has been here for a year or so, what do you think?
