Black Friday For The Buffiverse!!!!

I am – Hercules!!
I guess if you work on a show starring vampires it makes sense to get your bad news on Friday the 13th.
Two messages just popped very suddenly into my emailbox:

Herc,

Don't know if you've gotten the news yet. It's just starting to spread on the Paramount lot. Angel has been cancelled. The cast and crew were just informed a little while ago.

doverpro
und:

I have it on very good authority - from a very very reliable source.... "Angel will not be returning next season."

Sadness.

thought you should know.

be well.

-call me Bats
Great horny toads!! Series co-creator David Greenwalt has told zap2it it's all true!! (Let’s hope Joss Whedon has enough time between "Firefly" production meetings to pitch a new spinoff for the fall!!)
It's particularly vexing, of course, because the current season of "Angel" was rapidly developing into its best ever.
Is it too late for Sarah Michelle Gellar to drop by for the finale??
And - hey hey hey - didn't that Kristen-type Wanda gossip girl over on E! Online already tell the world that "Angel" had been renewed for next season????

So, how do we go about trying to save the show? Is there a plan in motion?

Did Joss sleep with some network executive's wife or something? Why do they insist on cancelling his shows? Notice that they didn't give a single reason for cancelling the show. The ratings are up in spite of being in a very competative spot. The show is better than ever. I hope that UPN or another network picks it up. Angel has been the best show on television since Firefly was cancelled. What is the WB going to replace it with? Probably something as lame as Charmed or Tarzan. These TV execs don't care about the money they make off a show. If they do not like the show themselves, they cancel it and piss off the fans. Network tv is gone from my television set. To hell with them all.

There is a press release from the WB.

http://www.thewb.com/PressRelease/Index/0,8341,156980,00.html

However, there has been a petition started already and it has about 4500 signatures at this point. (including mine)

If Joss wants to end it, I'm okay with that. If it's a trade off, so Joss can get Firefly back on TV, I say it's worth it.

BUT... if Joss is unhappy about this news and he has more to tell in the Angel 'Verse, then let's go crazy on WB and try to fix this!

From what I've heard, this was rather unexpected. I kind of doubt that Joss is all that happy about it.

For now, I'm just going to sign the petition until I hear some sort of word as to Joss's feelings on the matter.

I can't help but think that if Sarah G. had agreed to appear on the show, then it wouldn't have been cancelled.

Honestly, I wasn't too hot on the Angel storyline last season, but I like the show & stuck with it. This season, it's been like a revival of the show -- more enjoyable than ever. Once again, the networks disappoint me. Pretty soon, I won't have any reason to own a TV other than as a DVD monitor.

Go visit the folks at renewangel.com - They don't have it up on their main page yet, but there's a hopping thread about the matter here - http://www.renewangel.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1164

They did a lot to try and convince the WB to renew last year, and they've got a million good ideas, contact info, and some killer postcards for an insane campaign.

There is more than one petition.

I got this link from renewangel.com

http://www.petitiononline.com/angels6/petition.html

Tis link is specifically about the current cancellation. The other petition link (elsewhere in this thread) was actually for last time WB threatened to cancel.

I hate to be the one to look at the positive side of this but having Angel finish at the end of this season frees Joss Whedon up to focus totally on the Firefly Movie. As much as I like watching Angel, I could easily sacrifice it for a brilliant Firefly Movie and a new Firefly series.

I liked Angel as an extension of Buffy, but I never believe it was on the same level as Buffy, or for that matter Firefly. Buffy and Firefly had a sense of cutting edge to them but Angel always felt kind of middle of the road.

I also believe that finishing Angel at the end of this season makes sense. Wolfram & Hart have always been the big bad on Angel and it make sense that they will be defeated at the end of this season and I also believe there is not much more you can do with the characters on the show, I think just about all of them have run their course.

In conclusion I would just like to say that I believe that Joss Whedon is an excellent writer who can write excellent TV shows and movies with or without vampires in them and I would like to see what else he can do out side of the Buffyverse. There is not a show I can think of that wouldn't have been better with Joss running it. Just think what Joss would have done with shows like Star Trek, X-Files, Space: Above & Beyond, The Dead Zone, Dark Angel, Millennium and so on and so forth.

Well, I'm not sure that Angel really took all that much Joss time anyway.

Still looking at this Philosophically, both Buffy and Angel have had good runs on TV. I would much rather see Firefly return to TV than either Buffy or Angel.

I think the "network" was falling all over themselves to get that John Wells Dark Shadows remake. Not enough room for two vampire dramas, so they went with the one from the mainstream popular John Wells and kicked Joss to the curb. I am going to miss Wesley more than any of the others (except for the lovely Winnifred), because I think there was so many stories yet to tell for that multi-layered character. Yet another in a long series of sad days for us Browncoats.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

This really hurts. I think Im going to cancel my cable at the end of the season with nothing to look forward to in the near future. Gorram it, Firefly is my only hope.

The upcomming Angel episode this week really looks funny too.

Dammit! This was the first year I begna watching Angel, and now it's over? Well, shit! Joss Whedon has no television shows now. It went from three to zero in a year and a half.

Angel - now we'll never know about his big battle, where he (or Spike) fights for good (or evil) and turns the tide, or whatever...

No Whedon shows...this hasn't happened since '96. Damn, wtf am I going to watch now? They stopped airing MST3K Saturday mornings...and now this.

He'd better get on the FF television series.

Hey, but no one mentioned the good news:
Quote:

"Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including 'Frasier' and 'Friends,' the cast, crew, writers and producers of 'Angel' deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series, and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB," the network says in a statement. "We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table. "

So..a movie...that'd be nice, eh?

TV Movies seems to be the suggestion - if there is a movie, I'm guessing it would be Buffy.

Then again, presumably this will begin the rumours about Superman again, what with both properties being WB.

Am I the only person who never found Fred all that attractive? I grew tired of her by the second episode when the writers kept giving everyone lines expressing what a beauty she is. If she was truly a beauty, we'd see it. If you have to keep telling us she's a beauty, well darlins ... I'm not buying it.

Criminy, she needs a sandwich -an ice cream sandwich. Skinny, scrawny without even shadow of a hint of a curve on her. Stick figure in the sand.

I, for one, won't miss Fred. Everyone else, I'll miss like members of the family.

What a shame. I never got seriously into Angel until 2/3 of the way into the 4th season. I remember turning on one of the episodes in the Jasmine arc, looking at the various "previously on Angel clips", and having my jaw hit the floor. There was so much back story and interesting developments that I knew this was a complicated show...and I wanted to know more! I've seen just about all of them by now.

Most TV executives seem to hate story arcs, and want more stand-alone episodes. For me, it was the complexity and "epicness" of the story arc that made me want to watch the show. So, needless to say, I've been a little disappointed in this season (with its focus on stand-alone episodes). Still, I hoped it would continue.

(stuff cut)

Hmmm, it was the fact that she was so much unlike your typical hollywood bimbo type that attracted me to her in the first place. She is a little on the thin side, but it's more her cute geekyness that I find attractive then anything else.

Wow, I'm surprised. I think Fred is gorgeous, and she has a great ass.
