What path would our favorite BDH's have followed if the Independents have won? Inspired by a brief discussion on Live Journal.

I haven't figured out every character but Mal comes to mind first.

He would have served 2-3 years on peacekeeping duty on the border between the Alliance and Independent planets. And be promoted to several times Lieutenant and busted down just as many and was finally mustered out as a Master Sergeant.

He went home to Shadow. His Ma hadn't changed much around the ranch but there was a tidy sum of credits in the bank due to a beef contract with the Independent forces. He and his Ma continued to run the ranch together, but his Ma insisted on moving to a new little house down by the creek.

After a year or two, Mal marries his childhood sweetheart, Becky and 3 kids come like clockwork. The last being a little girl with blond hair like her Ma and her Pa around her little finger.

The ranch has it's ups and downs but is usually in the black. There was talk of Mal running for the Assembly but he quickly bowed out and settled for being the leader and spokesperson for the ranchers in his part of Shadow. He a very influential person on Shadow and was sought out frequently for his advice and leadership.

Life was good. The ranch prospered and the children grew up and married, but stayed close with Mal's grandchildren under foot.

In his 76th year, Mal Reynolds was thrown by a horse (that never happened). He broke several ribs and before they could heal he contracted pneumonia and passed away in his sleep.

People came from near and far and even some of his old Army buddies came from off planet for the funeral. He was buried next to his Ma, Pa and wife Becky in the family plot under the trees near the bend in the creek.

I wonder if he did intend to go back to Shadow? Maybe eventually, I suppose, because otherwise that would take the sting out of how he lost Shadow in the canon verse (and Joss Whedon wouldn't have that!)

It's just, buying Serenity seems like just a random thing if he hadn't wanted to tour the stars a little bit before he left Shadow. I think that may be part of the reason he signed up... In addition to all the trouble the Feds caused on Shadow when they started messing around.

So I think he might have still bought Serenity. :) Maybe even gathered the same crew he did.

Some things are just meant to be.

The only thing that'd be different is that they wouldn't be doing crime.

If the Independents had won, what would be the state of the Companion Guild, Alliance-supported as it is? Interesting question, NCBrowncoat! Like ByteMite commented, I do tend to think some things are just meant to be, but playing along with the hypothetical in this topic it's still an intriguing line of thinking to ponder.

Well presented scenario, but I do think that Mal was always restless, and would never settle down.

If the Independants won he probably would have got a job on an Independant ship or something where he could always be on the move.

Probably would have got fired too for buzzing past Alliance airspace/borders out of spite.

CellarDoor: I think the Core worlds would still be Alliance, it's just the Border and Rim worlds would be a loose confederacy of planets instead of under Alliance control.

The Guild would still exist in the Core, though their efforts to expand into the Rim (like Sheydra's Training House) would be hindered somewhat.

I think Inara may still have found her way out to the Rim, she seems to have been trying to leave something behind in the Core. :)
