Hey everyone...
Just wanted to probe the group here and see what you guys can suggest. I still want to get the soundtracks for the show and movie but until then... can you guys give me some names of groups with similar music? I would prefer instrumental but I'll take whatever at this point. I just want something to plug into my pandora account to tide me over. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Try Abigail Washburn. Her music is a mix of Appalachian and Chinese influences. Very fitting of the 'verse.

ANOTHERSKY

Dunno if any of these are what you're looking form, but...

That there was chinese bluegrass. Yes you have permission to snort your beverage of choice through your nose--I did.

Al Petteway performing a very familiar sounding rendition of traditional Irish "Sligo Creek". I am in love.

These girls can dance. Very serenity soundtracky:

If you want songs with lyrics, try:
--The Punisher
--Flirtin with time (tom petty)

"Green Island Serenade"
This is traditional Taiwanese sung by Vienna Teng--first time I heard the song I thought of the crew:

Also nice chinese, sounds really scottish/irish though, ha:

If you want repetative, try Yanni (no seriously): "Nightengale"

For those backwoods planets (with synthesizers, naturally...)

Kind of in the same vein as the Petteway:

Traditional Scot. Song

"Tam Lin":

ABSOULUTELY in-the-vein song: "Run Red Run"

but you may want to find a better quality one.

Ditto:

(There are instrumentals of these, I just can't find them on youtube)

Instrumental, que bueno:

This is a really really old song...you can hear the roots in it:

You might want to check out "world music"--the composer mixed so many influences for firefly that you might find something you really like.

"I think we lost our fuzzy dice back there."
"Were there space monkeys? Terrible space monkeys/"
"Going for a ride."

The Bedlam Bards, On The Drift album is excellent Firefly filk.

The Persephone Pickers instrumental album is packed full of verse like tunes (we use their music a lot on The Signal)

The Signal's Season 2 album Songs From The Black is a collection of all sorts of stuff played on the show...with the added advantage that it's absolutely free :-)

Those are some excellent other suggestions made BTW.

Actually, if you dig deep enough, there was a thread a while ago, and I mean a while ago, that answered this exact question.

Seems to me there was a huge response, lots of excellent music suggested.

John Mellencamp was suggested, as was Johnny cash and such.

It's possible I responded to that earlier thread.

One of my favorite performers is Steve Earle, whose music is an eclectic blend of country, folk, blues, bluegrass and rock, depending on the album. I have all thirteen of his original cds, and he has tons more collections and live performances available.

One in particular that I mentioned before in relation to Firefly is Train A-Comin' from 1995. There is an instrumental called "Northern Winds" that reminds me a lot of the Ballad of Serenity version that made it into the closing credits of the movie. That same album has two other songs that, while about a different time period in America's past, still reminds me of Firefly characters. "Mercenary Song" could as easily be about Jayne Cobb rather than some soldiers of fortune who join up with Pancho Villa. And "Ben McCulloch" is about a Confederate general, but could easily be reworked to be about Colonel Obrin, the officer whose mustache Tracey cut off during the war against the Alliance.

Another of Steve's cds that is similar to a lot of Firefly music is the mainly bluegrass The Mountain, which he recorded with The Del McCoury Band as backing musicians.

NCBROWNCOAT

There's also Emerald Rose who visit Dragon Con. They play traditional Appalachian mountain, with a good dash of Celtic.

The CD "Con Suite" is a hoot though. It's full of songs about Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons, female vampires and there's even one about our favorite crew.

I was also listening to the soundtrack to "Slumdog Millionare" and A.R. Rahman has managed to create a very eclectic blend of music that reminded me of all the influences in the 'Verse; traditional Indian, electronica, a dash of rock and even rap from M.I.A.

DATAWHAT

There are some really great suggestions in here, especially the Abigail Washburn and eastmountainsouth stuff. I pulled together many of these suggestions into a Spotify playlist available (with lots of blathering commentary) here:

http://datawhat.com/2018/01/music-like-firefly.html

My selections are all instrumentals that could be found in the Firefly and Serenity universe...it is mostly instrumental acoustic folk with some bluegrass/Chinese hybrid songs and a couple appropriate tunes from film and video game soundtracks. Mostly stuff that could be on in the background while reading or maybe starting a role-playing game that all had the same mood and feel, and kept the signal going.
