This will be my first year going. Driving 12 hours too!! I didn't know I would be going until yesterday, so I haven't booked a room yet (yuck - I know). But I am going to end up staying about 15 minutes from the event. There is parking available for those not staying at an onsite hotel right? And what (on average) do the celebrities charge for autographs? Just trying to figure out what to save up for it.

Thanks guys!!

Yes there is parking right across from the Marriott... also it's not too late to get a good room. I'd check for cancellations and if you want, you can PM me as I have two reservations for hotels less than a half block away that I was going to cancel. You're welcome to them

Average charge for autographs is $30-50 if memory serves.

Ni hao hun! my crew has a 12 hour drive to dragoncon too :) glad to see we are not the only "Crazy" ones.

Umm parking at the marriot was I believe $50 a day? not sure on that, I saw parking for as little as $10 a day but not near peachtree center. You may want to explore parking options along their rail system.

As for autographs, I think most charge between $20 and $40 some are more, some are less. I am sure though if you post whose autograph you are after folks can give you a closer cost.

I always wanted to go. Maybe next year.

I've never been to a convention of any kind.

I would have to agree with ArtCat on this one. If you end up staying 15 minutes or more away from the con hotel, you might want to check out the MARTA system ( www.itsmarta.com). They have some parking lots outside of town and riding the train right into Peachtree Center might be preferable to paying $50/day to park.
Although I think I remember a parking deck on Baker Street that only charged around $12/day. It was a few blocks away from the con but do-able.
Have fun at your first Dragon*Con!!!!

Oh, I wish I were going to my first D*Con! Maybe next year... This year my big 'verse expense will be a road trip this coming weekend for Browncoats: Redemption (I don't wanna say too much since I'm under an NDA and I don't want to get in trouble by pushing the limits, but I'm SO excited, even to be an extra! )

Nice to get an idea for the D*Con rates and parking situation though, in case I'm able to go when they hopefully premiere Browncoats: Redemption at D*Con 2010! (hehe, I'm a Browncoat for 3 months and already finding ways to get involved in the 'verse!) It sounds like there are plenty of seasoned Dragon*Con attendees who can give helpful advice around here.

Marta is the answer. It only cost $1.75 or so and it delivers you right into the middle of things. Also there are several hotels within a block or two of D*C so check those out too.

Come by the KidsNeedtoRead booth and say hi. We'll be there this year!

Is there Firefly doins at DC? If so, when and where is it?

Last year there were 3 panels with cast members. They were HUGE, and I waited about 1-2 hours just to sit in the middle of the pack. So far, Ron Glass has been announced, and I'm sure there'll be lot of Whedon-related events. Details won't be released until a few weeks before the con when they finalize the schedule.

Of course there's the meeting celebs to get stuff signed and take pictures. The costs I saw ranged from $20 to $50. Most of the celebs have a deal with Froggy's photos so you get a professionally done picture. Sometimes they combine cast members from the same show to save you a few bucks.

I stayed at a motel on the outskirts of town and did the MARTA thing last year (my first year), and it's fine if you don't want to stay for the late events/parties since MARTA closes around 12:30-1:00am.

I'd keep an eye on the LiveJournal community, especially the one specific for rooms if you want to snag one of the host hotels from a poor person who has to cancel.

Another important MARTA note, not only do you need your little ticket to get into the system, but you need it to get back out, you have to wave the pass to get the thingy to let you in and out as one of my traveling companions discovered.

oh and goofy Atlanta vagrant law, if they get pushy asking for stuff or trying to sell you stuff, say, "I'm feeling threatened." Legally, if they do not, the police can then arrest them :D

What time does the registration on Thursday close? And also, is this going to be something that I'm hooked on and will forever be attending?
It's months away and I'm already stoked.

Thanks again!

I traveled over from Scotland to Atlanta in '07 expecting it to be an expensive one time only trip. Was there again last year too, and I'll be going again this year. Expect that you'll like it. A lot.

Hmmm, may have to make this. I've been going to AWA for a few years now...this one is ridiculously expensive compared to that, which is the only thing stopping me...

But I'm not a huge anime fan...and this seems to have more stuff that I actually get into...I live about half an hour from the exit 5 Marta station...I could just drive there and take Marta, or even get a ride...

*looks at wallet* I'm debating whether my kids need to go to college or not.

That's kinda what I was thinking. It's my b-day in a week's time, and I'm at the age where I just say, "Send as much money as you can." I'll guess once I see how much "as much as you can" is I'll try to gauge it. *crosses fingers for money and for more FF actors to be confirmed*

Dragon Con is actually more than you can do in 2 or 3 weeks if you wanted to attend everything and could spread it out.

Already got passes, hotel reservations and plane tickets (yeah for the Delta/Jet Blue price war about a month ago. It's now much cheaper than even driving).

And the kids will want to come with you, eventually...my daughter would much rather like to go on a a trip to Dragon Con than another semester at college.

Try to buy early next time. I think it was $50 if you buy for the next year while at the con. Even at around the $100 price, I think it's worth it for about half a week's worth of fun!

Not sure if anyone else has used these, but I've found them helpful. Especially since I'm planning for my first D*C.
