RIPWASH

I was at the evil Wal-Mart last night in the video section. I walked by the $5 DVD bin and something caught my eye. SERENITY for $5!!! I haven't purchased it yet, so I ran over to take a closer look. I would prefer the Special Edition, but this will do for now. I pick up the case . . . Full Screen. Dang! After some rummaging, I couldn't find a Wide Screen version, so I left a little depressed.

Ah well. Maybe later. LOL

The full screen is interesting if you have a standard TV. Just sayin'.

Standard TV upstairs, wide-screen LCD downstairs. I don't know why but I just prefer the wide screen format these days. I used to hate it, but now it's my format of choice. If I'm going to get it, I may as well just get it in the format I want, right? I do like the idea of a loner copy, though.

I'm trying to find a Collector's Edition at a decent price. DeepDiscount.com has 'em for under $21 delivered. So that may be the direction I go after a while. Have to "save up" for it. LOL

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Very true.

Now I will have to make a trip to the modern day Blue Sun that is Wal Mart to see if they have them in the $5 bin here. If so I will be picking up a handful.

Oh, I've been known to turn down some of my favorite movies in the $5 bin just because it's screen ratio has been set to full screen. (And, did I really spell it "fir"? :P)

With good cause: you lose nearly a third of the picture! Here's an example, using Lord of the Rings:

No thanks! Still, the loaner idea isn't bad. My father actually bought the full screen $5 one and the whole family got together and watched it over Easter together (I was the only one who had seen it previously). So it works for introducing new Browncoats to the film, but I agree, it's not my idea of a good choice if a choice between options is in fact involved.

Even though I own two copies of Serenity already, if I saw a full screen version of it in a bin for $5 I would buy it, the4n I would probably donate it to the VA for Veterans to watch while in the hospital.

One of the funnier things that happened is that I was watching the movie with my kids last night and at a certain point I started getting antsy. My kids know that Wash dies in the movie, that he's my favorite character and that I hate that part of the movie. They immediately picked up on my uneasiness.

"Is that part coming, Dad?"

"Yup."

When I was introducing my family to the BDM over Easter, they paused literally in the beat between the space battle/chase and Wash's final of many "I am a leaf in the wind..." line. I almost exploded trying to contain myself and keep from saying they couldn't have paused to call for a bathroom break at a worse time... What a thing to come back to...

That IS pretty funny (in a sad, macabre way) that your kids could sense your unease.

(Regarding the bargain bin, I looked at a Wal-Mart I don't usually go to and they didn't have Serenity for me to buy a loaner copy... :sadpanda:)

Rip, glad to hear you finally snagged your copy. I was in such a rush the day Serenity came out on DVD that I just went and grabbed a copy, and didn't realize 'til I got home with it that I'd gotten the fullscreen version! Not a problem - it gave me an excuse to get the CE when it came out, and this time I made sure to get widescreen. It was the very first thing I watched when I got my new flatscreen TV. I was in awe, and remain so.

Haven't seen the BluRay version yet. I'll be sure to grab a copy when (or if) I ever get around to getting a BluRay player (or a PS3), and once again, it will likely be the first thing I watch on it...

I'm such a Serenity/Firefly slut.

I got both Firefly and Serenity on Blu the day they each came out (had been saving), and it was worth it. Not as great as SOME Blu movies, simply because they were shot to look slightly grainy and have some odd colours and contrasts, but they still look brilliant if you can tell that sort of thing. The picture is sharper, which, on a bigger screen, helped me notice a few things that I'd never seen before for some reason, and the better sound was amazingly good in my opinion.

Not to mention the extra features!!

After watching "Serenity" again, it dawned on me (yes, I'm a mite bit slow in the brainpan) how intricately sad the last few lines between Mal and Zoe are (my new sig). They're both talking about the ship and Zoe at the same time and it's really heart-wrenching. The ship's torn up and at the same time Zoe must be utterly broken inside because of Wash's death.

Brilliant writing.

I did smile a little bit at the funeral scene though. It's sad, but in a way, when Zoe walks up I said to myself, "She got her slinky dress!"

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

Yup, it's layered, alright. She's talking about the ship, herself, their lives, the future, and the whole danged thing. She's sad, but she's still hopeful.

Breaks my heart a bit, it does.
