"SAILING THE RIVER TAM
Buzz inside certain Los Angeles law firms suggests that talent contracts are being hammered out, and they’re timed around a May start for an upcoming Universal feature about a starship captain, a space hooker, a mysterious preacher and a pair of fugitives named Tam. The bad news: under the scenario discussed, “Firefly: The Movie” wouldn’t hit multiplexes until late 2005."

I don't particularly see this as bad news... Late Firefly is better than NO Firefly!

Late 2005 is perfect. Episode 3 will be out of theaters by then, and the legions of Star Wars fans will be looking for something else to latch onto.

Speaking as a devout SW fan, I have plenty of love to give to both Firefly AND Star Wars.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

2004 or 2005 doesn't really matter to me. I would rather wait a while longer and get a quality movie, one that will convert a lot of new fans.

Speaking as a formerly devout Star Wars fan, I'd be placing bets that the third movie will suck more than the second (as the second sucked more than the first) and that fans will be so disheartened by the suckiness of George Lucas that they'll be willing to try any Sci-Fi out, even a plucky space-western with no aliens. I beleive these fans will be amazed at a sci-fi with an actual worthwhile story to be told instead of some crappy plot devices to string together a bunch of over-done CG effects.

But that's just my opinion.

Me too. I can wait a long time, as long as I know the reward at the end of the wait will be a FF movie.

Lets see...at current movie prices, adding a few cents (Seven does some math) ... times the number of trips I'll make to the theater to see it ... plus money set aside for snacks (Seven does some more math) .......

I figure I'd better start saving my pennies now, 'cause 15 or 20 trips to the theater, well, that's a lotta cash- 2005 gives me plenty of time to save! Woohoo, I'm excited now! Lets get them there contracts signed!

I'll never agree with you on this. The way I see it, the lack of young Anakin, and less Jar Jar Binks made Episode II suck a lot less. Plus, it's more fun to see a droid army fight a clone army than a Gungan Army. And I think Episode III could be good, at least as good as Episode II. It's just such a cool historical period! Palpatine becomes Emperor, those annoying Jedi get killed off, Padme has to give her kids away, etc.

What made EP II suck more than EP I for me was the lack of anything interesting. EP I had Darth Maul and one of the best fight scenes I've seen in a really long time. Sure there was Jar Jar (someone please put him out of his misery!) and some of the worst kid acting ever to stain the silver screen. Not to mention the whole "force is a collection of microscopic organisms" crap and Anakins whole "immaculate conception". But it had some interesting stuff with some kind of a story you cared about. EP II had nothing but crap scene after crap scene. And just to help you understand my full meaning, I've been in love with Star Wars since I was five. Star Wars stuff was all I ever asked for on birthdays and Christmas until I was almost 18, that's when I got into the comic books, novels and computer games. Now I'm 29 and I still collect Star Wars Legos, games and books. However, I can't abide George Lucas totally wrecking the whole genre and trying to turn it into some Star Trek wannabe, or something worse. He took all the things that made the original series great and got rid of them, then he took some of the things that helped make it stand apart and exaggerated them into rediculousness. Pair that with a cast that couldn't have less chemistry even if they were in different movies (an actual movie critic quote) with an unbelievably bad story, not to mention writing and you get a giant pile of Bantha poo, that I'm just not gonna swallow. Sorry. I don't care how "alien" the aliens look, I don't care how big the explosions are, I don't care how over-the-top evil Anakin has to become (seemingly overnight), and I really don't care for a Yoda that fights like a spastic bouncy-ball (the "real" Yoda would've found a better way than relying on his "physical" skills).
I guess my point it, I'm terribly upset that Mr. Lucas can spoon feed us crap (especially when he's got such a talented design team) and people still just eat it up only because "it's Star Wars". I say we demand better quality from him, the kind of quality we know his team can produce. Sadly, it means that the megalomaniac that he is will have to let go of the reins a bit, and we all know that ain't gonna happen.

Anyway, that's my rant, it seems that my love of Star Wars has been replaces with a love for Firefly (and LOTR).

The difference between fact and fiction is that fiction needs to be believable.

Ooops, didn't mean to hijack the thread, to help people get back on track:

I'll wait almost two years for Firefly: The movie. Heck I'd wait more, and I'd rather have them take their time and do it right, than slap some stuff together just to get it out to the masses (though by that philosphy, SW EP1 should been the most amazing movie ever made), but not to be sidetracked (again) When it comes out, I plan on seeing it in the theatre, dragging all my friends along each time, at least 10 times, possibly more. Then I will rent the DVD several times, and then I will but the DVD for myself and each of my friends and family, and then I'll sign any more petitions to get it back on the air. If all that fails, I'll have to go get Vera and head down to FOX corparate HQ and spend some time in the "Dark Side".

The way I see it, if you don't like pointless explosions and things that are there simply to be cool, then you shouldn't be a Star Wars fan. And remember that this is like ten years after Episode I; there are probably some evil tendencies developing in Anakin prior to Episode II, which can probably be seen in the comics and novels. And the Battle of Geonosis had a LOTR level of epic scale to it. Another cool thing was when they gave Palpatine extra powers. Leave it to Jar Jar to doom the galaxy. :biggin: I personally didn't really like the Jedi fight scenes in Episode I, or any other Star Wars movie, because I don't really like lightsabers as a weapon. Of course, there were some incredibly crappy parts in Episode II as well.

They could put together a two hour Firefly movie way quicker than this timeframe. Look how quick they put together 10 hours already. I wonder if the extra time they're taking before the release date is more to accomodate the actor's schedules, or to make the special effects extremely spectacular.
Then let the masses watch with awed glee.

I hate to continue this off-topicness, but you guys should still be Star Wars fans even though the last 2 movies sucked. Just don't patronize the sucky stories. Before they had even written The Empire Strikes Back, there were Star Wars comics that, i assume, were an abomination. They continued their parade of crappiness through the 80s, then started writing novels with Tim Zahn. I hate to compare being a fan to religion, but I belong to the Episcopal Church, where a bunch of us feel betrayed by their decision to elect the actively gay bishop. (Not me. I don't really care either way.) One guy I talked to was on the council that elected the Virginia Bishop, who voted in favor of the gay recognition. Sure he feels hurt, betrayed, angry, etc., but he's still an Episcopal.
Or you could compare being a fan to being a good citizen. That'd also be a good analogy.

You're exactly right. That's why, in my rant I said this:
Quote:

Now I'm 29 and I still collect Star Wars Legos, games and books.

That's also one of the reason's I'm so mad about it. Here was the amazing jewel in the midst of a sea of crappy sci-fi, and it gets turned into all that it had risen above in the first place, by the creator no less. It's because I love the Star Wars universe so much that I'm so upset by it's lastest eps.
You're even right about it being analagous to a religion, and that you've got to take the bad with the good. The novel went on a deep trip down the slide of crap, but I read them anyway, because there was still some good stuff in them. The original comics were horrible (though I didn't notice because I was, like, eight at the time) but I still have them, somewhere.
I guess when I complain about the first two eps, I'm not actually say the Episodes are crap, but ranting about how the creator could take them down to that level so horribly. I don't hate the eps, I hate George Lucas for destroying a thing of beauty in the eyes of so many who trusted him. When EP 3 comes out, I'll probably still watch it in the theatre. I'll still get excited when the intro music starts to play. I'll still have hope that maybe, just maybe this one will be better, but I know it won't be. George is too far into his own dimentia to understand what he's done.

HJERMSTED

ONWARD FIREFLY!!

One tree sprouts while another one rots and dies. Star Wars, I'm afraid, is the latter dying tree. In it's death throes it will still garner millions of dollars for Lucas, Inc. but any vitality or or even innovation the series ever had remains trapped in the decade known as the 80s. The glimmer in Lucas' eye has morphed itself into a big fat dollar $ign that he can barely see past as he sits at his computer screen typing the next Star Wars script.

It's up to young tv/film franchises with new characters and premises to captivate us with cool new stories and ideas.

I predict Firefly the film will do well and that the DVD set will continue to be the coolest business card a franchise could ever hope for... circulating this strange new mythology around the globe (during this interval between show and movie) ever expanding the fan base.

Lucas can/should retire rich. But he needs to just STOP. He's embarassing himself by producing films which are essentially video games and action figure lines BEFORE they are stories and films. He also has a way of making gifted actors look BAD. Lucas hit upon a zeitgeist back in the late '70s to early '80s but he's kind of a writing/directing fraud if you really examine his career. His true talent lies in producing and merchandising.

Lucas should have gone the Roddenberry route and allowed actual sci fi writers to create and expand the Star Wars universe. Hell, look at what Whedon has done with all of his shows... he's hired (and still employs) some of the best damned writers in the business.

I hate to put it so harshly, but Star Wars has become big budget Pokemon. It's just a cash cow, y'all.

Other writers at the top of their game have been rushed into new projects, or movie adaptations, and they have gone sour. The reverse happened with Lucas, too much time, and it went sour, but thats another story.

Look at JMS, who rushed into Crusade on the back of B5, and it was unfortunately quite poor, despite some glimmers.

I would have very happy if the Firefly movie came out in 2005, no problems with that at all, just as long they give Joss time enough to breathe and think it all through. Better late than never totally applies with this.
