We only had the majority among the suggested names. Colbert's write-in campaign beat Serenity by 40,000 votes.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

They said they weren't bound by any of the votes anyway, but if they name it Colbert all I have to say is "Frak NASA!"

I'm surprised Serenity was Nasa's choice. Like to think that someone in Nasa is a browncoat, but probably not the case.

WASHINGTON – NASA's online contest to name a new room at the international space station went awry. Comedian Stephen Colbert won.

The name "Colbert" beat out NASA's four suggested options in the space agency's effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.

NASA's mistake was allowing write-ins. Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report" to write in his name. And they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes. Nearly 1.2 million votes were cast by the time the contest ended Friday.

NASA reserves the right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters "the most consideration."

Actually, it is the case. Steven Swanson, engineer and NASA astronaut took a copy of the Firefly DVDs up to the Space Station last year and is definately a big fan. So there's at least one guy at Nasa pushing for Serenity, though I'm sure there's even more since it was a listed choice.

While I highly doubt they'll go with Colbert, despite them beating us by 40,000 votes, I feel really bummed that we didnt' get together enough on this one to pull ahead.

My household boycotted Colbert (something that near broke my heart - he's very funny, but I can't respect him after I heard this). One of his flunkies totally dissed the makers of The Venture Brothers, when they asked if he'd br interested in doing another episode of the show. They were condescending and said of course he wasn't. I know he's not the one who wrote the message, but he never once, that I have heard, stepped up and apologized. I know they got someone else to do the voice of the character Colbert originally played, but wow, it seems SO awful that he'd let that happen! Worse, you'd think he'd remember the people that helped him before he was famous. That alone makes me ashamed of him.

I certainly hope they don't call it Colbert. I used to think he was great, but when you suddenly get so full of yourself, you can treat the people who helped you get there like dirt, you're the real scumbag.

Until he apologizes or at the very least, acknowledges this whole thing, he's on MY "List".

You know, thinking about it, for a show that's been off the air for years vs a show that is still currently broadcast, losing by only 40,000 votes is still pretty kick ass.

NASA still reserves the right to choose the name best suited to the theme, and I think Serenity fits that very well, but hopefully they'll still give a nod to Colbert - maybe they can name the waste containment module after him?

Agreed. I just can't see NASA naming it "Colbert" that is just lame and not in keeping with the other module names.

As a matter of fact, I do find it funny.

But there's still a part of me that would like to give Colbert a Gibbs-y little dope-slap. Purely out of well-reasoned spite, of course (and mostly as payback for his so-called interviews...through which he rarely shuts up...and I realize the interview, per se, is not the point, but still...).

There must have been a HUGE push for Colbert, because when I voted and checked the numbers (recently, within the last week), Serenity was ahead. It had 73% of the votes!

If it is a waste containment section, I'd rather they didn't use Serenity! (Though, in retrospect, it would be sort of funny...)

I think the huge push for Colbert was there all along. NASA's second mistake (after allowing write-ins) was not factoring the percentage of write-ins into the overall percentage. Serenity only had 70% of the votes for NASA-provided names. I think that's probably why Browncoats weren't as proactive--we had a false sense of security (especially for those who only visited the poll once and didn't think to add 2+2 together).

It's sad, I kinda don't want to watch his show anymore either (at least for a while). It's too distasteful after that voting mess, even though I considered myself a definite fan before all this arose.

I don't think being outvoted overall by Colbert's fans is reason to stop watching or being a fan of his show... Afterall, they only did what we as Browncoats have done many times before (and for which other fandoms have looked upon us with similar annoyance)...

Just because his fans got out and voted every day and ours didn't... well, that's not his fault.

That being said, I can't stand the guy so don't watch anyway; I think he's a bit of a dink (only not so much with the 'bit of a' if you get my drift)

in response to the peeps above about the node being a waste containment unit, that's only *part* of what it does. it's also like an observation deck (the cupola) from which the astronauts will be able to control the robotic arm, and it's also going to house most of the life support systems for the ISS. article says so :P that aint *so* bad

i still think "Colbert" is a lame name (gah, rhymes ><;;), i mean, it's not like he was pivotal in aviation, space exploration, science, or the world's history, which is usually why they would name something after a *person* he's just funny to some ppl (i don't really like him either, 2x2, he just irks me)

I would beg to differ with your point about it not being his fault that his fans went out in droves and voted; it's entirely his doing, and he knew it. Hehe, that's the power of the Colbert Nation unleashed, after all!

Oh no, no.. what I meant was it's not his fault that WE didn't vote enough to beat his fans... I know he's responsible for sending his fans out... but seriously, we could have done this. I can't believe that we didn't do this, really. Like some have said, I think the display that showed Serenity with 70+% was misleading for many fans, and so they didn't feel they needed to vote as often as they could have. But back in the day, I don't think there would have been any question at all, Browncoats would have demolished Colbert.

Okay everybody, let's all just chill for two seconds. I have a few points to make.

1. Colbert was a write-in joke like MyYearbook and the others. They would never get the name, they knew it, NASA knew it, it was a publicity game, like Colbert getting the votes to have the bridged named after him (He got the votes by a wide margin, but was never followed through on because it is ridiculous).

2. The name Serenity was put in, not because of Firefly, it had absolutely nothing to do with firefly. Our big fan in the sky may be a fan, but he had no say in the choices. Serenity happens to be a very beautiful word with beautiful meaning, and it happens to go swimmingly with words like Harmony and Tranquility, etc. Every time I hear people say "Oh gosh they must be fans of firefly because..." It makes me think of someone saying Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles borrows heavily from CS Lewis because it has the word Chronicles in it, just like Chronicles of Narnia. Look, there are fans everywhere, but to think Serenity was a nod to us as if Joss were the first person to associate that word with space is hubris at best, delusional at worst. But they know who we are now. They know it for sure now.

3. Though we and Joss had nothing to do with the choice of name options, they know what it means to us now and will see that it is the right choice. But we need to tone down the Hubris, and stop thinking NASA is endorsing Firefly. The fantasy of thinking so is cute, and as a huge fanatic, it is seductive but please, let's not take all this personally.

4. Colbert nation is just that, a Nation. Even with all the votes they got, that was a tiny fraction of their population actually voting. Even still, chillaxe people, we won. We won with authority. The only names with ANY hope of winning were the four choices, because what none of you seem to realize is that they would have whittled down their choices to those four, and we DOMINATED. Those four literally represent the only names they are prepared to follow through with. The write-in was just to see what themed name they may have missed or that might be better, not what would be a popular name. Colbert being a popular vote is cute. Nothing more. They wasted their effort and missed the point. The point wasn't to vote for ANY name, or to find the most POPULAR name, it was to see if there were BETTER names than the choices. The top 8 of the top 10 write-ins were laughable.

5. I apologize if I have offended or annoyed anyone with my admonishing tone. But seriously, stop getting "krunk" over this. We have won. NASA may not have intended it, but we have won. We beat Star Trek. I say that because everyone knows that the first fully modified shuttle designed for deep space manned flight (to mars for example)will be named after that Trek flagship, the Enterprise. But for a generation or two first, we will be shinning overhead, serenity looking down at those cute little Trekkies in their Klingon costumes. baQa' bitches! lol.

We should be celebrating.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

While it would not be my preference to have a space station segment named Colbert, it dismays me that they may choose another option.

You see, there is little sense in having a vote if the vote will not matter. NASA can do what it likes, but I shake my head every time I see a meaningless voting process.

My wife likes to watch Hell's Kitchen. Chef Ramsey (sp?) who runs the show frequently asks the participants to nominate one of their own for elimination... and then completely ignores their nominations in favor of his own choice.

It's his show, and his perogative, but it rubs me the wrong way. Why bother to have them vote?

Anyhow, that's my feeling on the subject. If the write in was not going to be used, it shouldn't have been allowed.

Ant: I think a lot of times the purpose of a vote contest serves partially to narrow down their choices if they can't come to a consensus in-house, and also to see what most people think would fit best. The only reason Colbert was even on the list was because he asked his fans to put in the vote (and it might have even been in jest), and he was the only talk show host to even do that, which to me just says "you're an ass" and I don't think the boys down in Texas were anticipating any suggestions that were beyond reasonable (I'm sorry, but I really don't think names like "MyYearbook" and "Colbert" are reasonable). The reason NASA put out the names they did in the first place was because they had narrowed it down to those few, and probably just couldn't decide between them because they all fit (or they just felt like having fun and getting other people's opinions, i don't know). No where did they say (at least I didn't see it anywhere) that the results of the vote would be final, they just said "we'll take whichever names score the greatest percentage and choose from them," which I think is perfectly acceptible. They didn't say they were taking Colbert out of the running, they just said 'oops, it scored more than we thought it did' and added his name to the list of considerations.

If I went off on a tangent I'm sorry :P lol, let me know if i completely departed from the discussion, I'll try to explain better.

Those space crafts were trinkets. The space station is the first attempt to truly live in space, and I'm talking about the important space flights like manned deep space flights. This is the International Space Station. Mankind's joint foray into colonizing space, not a vanity mission. And if you missed it, it was sarcasm, aimed at the point I made about the name serenity having nothing to do with Firefly. The name Enterprise is a hallowed name used many times in history before being chosen as a meaningful name for Star Trek. I was being ironic by admonishing for making those links and then making them myself... and the guy sitting next to me at the time was watching Star Trek TNG on his laptop. He got a kick out of it.

But I shall take your point and say touche my friend.

Just having fun with ya. <---(see? clear indicator of fun-having. or. something like that. is there a clearer "fun-having" emoticon? hmmmmmm)

The name Enterprise is a hallowed name used many times in history before being chosen as a meaningful name for Star Trek.
Seriously? Okay, now you're either kidding or just insane. Clearly... CLEARLY... the Enterprise of the future went back in time by flinging themselves around a ginormous sun in order to affect our past and plant the name of their ship in our collective consciousnesses and histories. Come on... you KNOW it's true.... And if the Aught-Three mid-bulk transports could have handled that sort of flingy-gravitational-stressy stuff, they would have done the same and we'd all be sailing in the Goodyear Serenity now. But they didn't. Cuz they're not as awesome as Star Trek. Clearly.

hmmm... You make a valid point. I forgot about time travel. Damnable federation.

... I honestly have no comeback... I'm quite shocked actually. I really have no smart remark to make. Do I have a fever?

... umm... well... your... your face is not as awesome as Star Trek, clearly. (that was weak... real weak )

"Am I talking to Miranda now?"

LOL! That would be some heifer-like behavior.

Once upon a time I had wanted the space station to be called Babylon 5... but realized we would first need a 1, 2, 3, and 4.

I totally got into a fight with a guy in my class over this today! I overheard him talking about how cool it was that Colbert won the contest and I kinda blew up at him and started ranting. It was kinda hilarious cause I totally made him back down and promise to watch the show.

Woot!
