I just got off the phone with the person in charge of the Firefly soundtrack at FOX. She is a Firefly fan and is very supportive of the soundtrack project. However, she says the soundtrack market is "in doldrums" right now, and they have decided not to issue the Firefly score through the conventional CD route. They plan to sell it on the internet instead, through downloads.

The problem is, this project is very low in priority right now. What browncoats can do is email FOX at askfox@foxinc.com to let them know there is a demand for Firefly's music. Please be polite and tell them you want to buy the music. These emails will be collected and used to make a case for releasing the soundtrack to Firefly as soon as possible.

I have heard some of the music that will be on the soundtrack, and I'm telling you that it is a MUST for all Firefly fans. The score stands VERY well on its own and is simply sensational. My interview with Greg Edmonson will be published on a soundtrack website shortly. I'll post a link to FFF.net when it is up.

In the meantime, PLEASE write FOX and let them know we love Firefly and want the music however we can get it.

Thanks everyone who sent in an email. Firefly fans are the best!

I too am very disappointed that they don't plan to issue a CD. But at this point, I am just glad the soundtrack is still going to be made.

Please keep this thread alive for a day or two longer, so that as many browncoats as possible can read it and send in an email. I told them that there is a market and demand for the soundtrack, and that Firefly fans are making their own CD's from the DVDs. They need to hear from more than just one person that it's true.

I really wish you can hear this proposed soundtrack. I told Greg Edmonson that I had 2 recurring thoughts as I listened to it.

1) Someone, PLEASE give this man a movie to score. (Preferably a movie named Firefly.)
2) It is a CRIME that I am the only one hearing it. All browncoats and film music fans need to hear this.

So you see, I have become emotionally attached to the soundtrack and to seeing it happen as soon as possible. Thanks again for your help.

How did you record the music from the DVD? Maybe I can try to make one myself.

You would think with all the DVD sales a soundtrack might be worth Fox's time ... perhaps a limited run at first .. I know it costs bucks to make the CDs, etc.

I used pcm output in mplayer (a multimedia player designed for Unix, but I believe there's a Windows version. http://mplayerhq.hu It's sort of tricky to install though.)

Searching for "dvd audio ripper" on google should give you programs for Windows/Mac. I don't have any experience with them though.

I have no idea how to lift audio from DVDs and would appreciate any help that could be given. And how would you eliminate the dialogue???

I am talking to FOX's legal department now about permission for even a few 30 second clips to put on the interview. Ideally, they want you to pay for a performance license from ASCAP/BMI. I don't know how radio shows do it, but if you can get legal permission, then they might even send you a CD you can use so you don't have to lift it off the DVD.

Hi, UK fan here, this might sound odd, but there is a radio station here called Classic FM, that basically plays classical music, however in recent years they have been playing more and more movie soundtracks, such as Lord of the Rings, and even some other 'classic' style music. I think the Firefly soundtrack would also sit very comfortably on such a radio station if it was heard.

I've also sent an email to Fox and posted the first post from this thread on some other sites I know of where people are fans of the show and in some of the Firefly yahoo groups in order to get more people mailing!!

I would indeed prefer a CD, but I'll buy it either way (and just make my own cd with my legally purchased song downloads).

I sent off an e-mail STRONGLY HINTING that I would prefer a CD release over buy'n'burn. I'm not satisfied until I tear off the plastic wrap and crack open a fresh jewel case.

Ah...plastic wrap. One of life's sweet, yet oft overlooked pleasures.

ANYway, one thing I thought of is that if anybody else is going to be making a pitch for CDs over downloads is to mention how much you'd love to PREORDER something like a Firefly soundtrack. Seriously, companies LOVE preorders. They love them to bits. Saying you'll buy a Firefly soundtrack when it gets made is good, but saying you'll put money up-front for it before the master disc has even been burned is better in certain corporate eyes.

Think how impressive it'd be for the first batch of not-even-made-yet CDs to sell out in, let's say, a week. Or less. It might send a message that there's an audience out here willing to front the money for stuff like this, and that the risks they (Fox or whoever) may take when it comes to this aren't really that risky after all.

Or maybe not. Who knows? But it's something to think about at any rate.

See, I have the opposite plan: I'll buy the CD, and rip it onto my hard drive. Of course, I'd still prefer a CD. I could put it in my CD case and look at the pretty box.

Thank you!

You all might be interested in reading the interview with Greg Edmonson, the composer of Firefly, now available online.

The article is not just about the music, but has lots of scoops about the making of the show.

http://www.tracksounds.com/specialfeatures/Interviews/interview_greg_e
dmonson.htm

Here are some highlights:
Quote:

Joss' original vision was of a single guy just sitting on the front porch just playing guitar and singing the song. But FOX always thought of this as a more straight ahead action show...

That is why, if you'll notice, anytime we had a shot of the Serenity in space, it is always guitar and/or fiddle, never horn. This was the antithesis of Star Trek. Does the horn work? Absolutely. But Joss wasn't remaking Star Trek....

The very last piece of music I wrote for this show was when Inara tells Mal she's leaving in the Heart of Gold. And that scene was heart wrenching to me, knowing that there would not be another....

And a lot more!

I sent an email as well, also asking for a cd release. Since the blaster worm, I have no sound driver on my computer (and therefore, no sound) AND it killed my cd burner as well. If they put it out there to download, I could do it, but it would sit on my computer with no way for me to access it.

This is a much better strategy than ripping tracks. We should be doing this legally, since stealing the music just hurts our case. I know it's only a small thing, but I say, hold off on the file sharing until Fox renounces its tentative plans to release the music. Then we can do ape-wild with ripping and downloading if they /do/ decide not to.

But here's a new plan: why not call radio stations asking for the music, all innocent-like? Sure, one person does it, they think you're crazy. And if two of you do it (*in harmony*) they'll think you're queer. But if three do it...can you imagine, /three/ people calling up a radio station and requesting the theme song or other music from the show? They'll think it's a movement. And that's what it is--the "I want a Firefly CD" movement in three-part harmony.

Message: You can get anything you want.

(Seriously, though--the Beatles got their first chance on a US radio station because some girl in MD called up her local DJ. And the /radio station/ went to the record company to get it and ended up importing one from the UK when none was available here.)

Calling the radio stations sounds like a good plan. One question though, besides the Firefly Theme (Ballad of Serenity), how would we ask for the other songs? Like the one at the end of "The Message"? There's no titles to the other songs.

There's no reason to be too specific. Just GUSH. DJs love passion. BE the diehard call-in guy.

I think, in addition to calling up hip classical radio stations or college campus stations for the soundtrack pieces, we could call regular Top 40 stations for the theme song--country stations could play it, too, and so could those new bluegrass/folk programs that have started up in recent years. "The Ballad of Jayne Cobb" would be right up their alley, too

Me--I'm emailing Late Junction ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/latejunction.shtml), the laid-back world music show (you can hear it online and it is the best thing ever), which plays movie soundtracks, among other things. If you want to email them (politely, since we don't want to alienate them), they're at late.junction@bbc.co.uk. Just innocently ask to hear something from the show, and if they email you back saying they haven't heard of it, tell them how great it is.

I haven't heard anything, unfortunately. Last time I talked to someone at FOX, the lady just said that nothing has changed. She said they hadn't routed the emails we sent to her office, but that it didn't matter anyway. They are committed to releasing the soundtrack. I asked her again if there is anything fans can do to help expedite the release, and she said no.

This was vastly different from the first time I talked to her, when she encouraged me to tell fans to send emails and that they would definitely count. So I am confused. I have no idea why she would change her tune that way.

Sorry that I don't have any more news than this.
