Was there a significance in Shindig when River began removing the labels from the cans? If so what was it?

I have heard the Blue Sun labels on the packages.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

From what I understand there was supposed to be an overarching plot about Blue Sun, the supercorporation of the 'verse, and their products containing some kind of mind control chemical and River knew about it. They're also sometimes seen as a sponsor of the program River was in. I think this got condensed in the movie with the government pumping PAX into the air, and Blue Sun was eliminated for simplicity's sake.

Thanks. I really like the attention to detail in this show, but wish they were a little better in explaining the subplots.

Well, to be fair, they did think (or hope) that they'd have a bit more than 13 episodes to explain and explore those subplots. The beauty and frustration of Joss is the depth of the work and the pacing of that depth. Layers and layers get peeled away over years. Even in 13 episodes, there were layers revealed, but mostly we could tell that there were many more layers to come.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

This is from the shooting script for that scene:

River: "There it is, there it is. It's always there if you look for it. Everybody sees and nobody sees it..."

[River has three cans unlabeled, and she's crushing a box of crackers. It has a visible, not emphasized, "Blue Sun" on it. She gets more violent and loud as she continues]

River: "These are the ones that take you! Little ones in the corner that you almost don't see. But they're the ones that reach in and do it. They're the ones with teeth and you have to smash them! A million things, and the little ends of the roots go everywhere and when you brush your teeth or all the little blue things are there but no one says it because, because sometimes they're afraid. And then they come...."

And in case you haven't noticed yet, in "Ariel" when River slashes Jayne with the knife, he is wearing a Blue Sun T-shirt.

I wonder if her comment about Jayne looking better in red was a clue...

Wo! I thought River removed the labels coz she just didn't like them. I never seem to see the "deeper" contextual hints in Firefly episodes... ironic considering I am possessed with the need to suck up every single sensory detail of everything I come in contact with in my everyday life. I'm gonna have to watch the episode now and see if there is more going on than i was aware of.

I thought the subplots were great. The BDM was a little disappointing, and not entirely consistent with the story.

Perhaps River slashing Jayne was a response to River seeing Jayne in a Blue Sun shirt, trying to exert control over Simon, in the form of intimidation. Thus making Jayne a subcomponent of the Blue Sun Machine.

Good call on River knowing about the chemicals. Most people can read labels today, but have no clue the poisons they are eacting.

On second thought, when did this happen in Shindig? I'm thinking of Ariel.
