Eh, well...... okay.

Last year, she got really, really depressed, and she started cutting herself. She only told me this year, and she's happy now and she sweared to me that she was over that. But lately she's been getting depressed, and she just showed me that she's started again! And I know, wanting to throttle her doesn't seem like an appropriate reaction, but she frustrates me since apparently there's something wrong and I can't fix it for her and it drives me nuts!

Sweety I have dealt with this with students all the time. Here's what you do. TELL HER PARENTS...TELL HER COUNSELOR..Tell anyone who will listen to you. She needs help way beyond anything you can do.
Also its an attention getting , pity me, drama queen choice. I am sure the stress and trauma are real, but there is ABSOLUTELY nothing you can do to help her. Either she gets competent professional help for her issues, or she won't get any better

I agree with MsA wholeheartedly. You can listen to her and be there for her and be her friend, but the best counsel you can get her is professional help. cutting on oneself is no joke, nor is depression, and it won't go away on its own. She may hate you for telling her parents/teachers/principal whoever you end up telling, but this is the kind of secert you *have* to violate, for her own safety and well-being. It's a tough spot to be in, but it's something you have to do.

I can't tell her rents, they're the backbone of her troubles, and the counselor at the school is useless...

LF/RF: As another teacher-type, let me add to MsA's suggestion: If you can't talk to her parents, or the school counselor, talk to another adult that your friend trusts -- a school teacher, her priest, a favorite aunt/uncle of hers, if your friend trusts your parents talk to them. The main thing is, LET A TRUSTED ADULT KNOW AND GET HER SOME HELP.
I know friendship and loyalty are important, but as it has been said before, this is one secret that you should not keep.

Yep you gotta rat her out. It's a cry for help and clearly she needs help. You might lose a friend for a while though.

Think of how you'd feel if she committed suicide and you never said anything though.

RF, trust me, you want her to get the help she needs. Things like this are indicators of a deeper problem and are a mask for other problems. She could easily develop eating disorders, start a drug habit, or become sexually promiscuous. If she's lucky she will only do one of the three, but those things all go hand in hand.

If you really want to help, tell a trusted adult that can advocate a solution with her. If you are her friend than enabling her by not seeking help is an injustice to you both.

OK so not to make you reveal more than you'd like, but what city are you in ( you can PM me if yuo're more comfy with that) I can find hotlines for you that you can report her to. Also any teacher you have together or the school vice principal or principal would be good.... and hey sweety you may think your counselor sucks, but they still have resources you don't and will have the ability to contact those resources. Also unless her parents are abusing her they need to know she's doing this. She might have major problems with them and feel they are the cause of all this, but a LOT of teenagers feel that way. It's a big part of being a teen. Unless you have reason to believe her parents hate or abuse her, you need to tell them. She needs help NOW> Believe me I have been where you are and if I had told a teacher or school counselor my friend Rachel would be alive. Instead she was buried in the cemetary a few months after her 14th birthday....

...Coming from the other (teacher/adult) side of the situation, you need to let them know.
As teachers/counselors/school employees, there's an adult there that knows her as a person and cares for her... While they might not know that how severely depressed she is, they do care for her and for you.
I know we're repeating the message, but get her help PLEASE, NOW. Violating that secret is far better than to keep it.

MsA has already offered to provide you with direct information to local hotlines, but if you don't feel like sharing even with her, may I suggest the following numbers:
Boys Town National Hotline: 1-800-448-3000 toll-free, these people are trained counselors and can help you and her with a voice to talk and listen to (as well as provide other resources)
The National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) They'll route your call to the nearest crisis center, and all calls are free and confidential

There are more, I'm sure, but for her sake and yours, please let an adult near her know. A favorite adult relative, a teacher, her doctor (if you know them), her rabbi/priest/minister...

So there are layoff rumors swirling around the office where I work. So, now I'm trying to stay away from saying stuff like that. I feel like stuff like "I wish I could be at home" or "man I hate getting up for work" just tempt fate :-P

Car was frozen.

Some a-hole drove ten miles an hour under the speed limit half way to work.

Another a-hole backed out onto the highway while on the phone almost sideswiping me with the ass end of his truck.

And a dog ran head on into me at a bend in the highway, missing me by inches.

Oh happy day.
