"The Letter writing campaign has been put on hold for now. We have received word from a couple of sources that Universal is, at this point, on board with movie, and that the current stumbling block is elsewhere. So as a result, we have been asked to put our letter writing campaign directed toward Universal on hold for now. Thanks to all those that participated, I'm convinced it has helped. In the mean time, feel free to follow through with our other guerilla marketing ideas, and continue converting friends, family and complete strangers to the Firefly fold."

Okay, this must be what going mad feels like...

I've just been to ffm.com, scoured the news and other sections, and found NO mention of this.

My heart is now firmly in my throat. Judging by outlander's sign-on date, this is no pseudo-Browncoat-come-lately laying a Troll-hammer of a prank on us. Some clarification on the source and particulars of this post are most energetically requested.

Do y'all suppose the "stumbling block" has to do with getting the actors together by a specific film-starting date?

If I remember correctly, something was said about 'convinceing the guys with money that your production has merit.' Dunno who spesifically that would mean though.

Beats me...

I'm just too busy saying "YEEEHA!" and "WOO-HOO!" and other silly things, not quite having got far enough past "Universal is on board with the movie" to think about much else at this point.

I suspect, however, that my profound ignorance about the film industry and many degrees of separation from those who are deep in the pudding of this particular deal will make any speculation on my part less than useless (though I will gladly read those of others).

YEEEHA!! WOOO-HOOOO!!

On reflection, it occurs to me that ignorance is, in fact, a curable disorder. Perhaps someone might be kind enough to lay out for me/us what are the organizational relationships among the various players (e.g., Universal is the distributor [and what that means]; ________is the production company [and what that means], etc.).

If these things are more clear to more people, it might bring us a little closer to understanding where the logjam might lie, and what we can do to help coax it back on its way (if, indeed, there's anything we can/should be doing. Mayhap a deal in progress is best left alone to ripen behind closed doors)...

Any Industry-savvy folks out there in a sharing mood?

Keep flyin'!

FYI:
Just so no one thinks they are going crazy, I can only see the Feb 1 post if I use Internet Explorer - nothing past January 25, 2004 shows up when I view the site in Netscape. I checked the source code and there seems to be an error in the page that netscape rejects...

Ditto here with a pre-0.8 build of Mozilla Firebird. No sign of the 2/1 update with that browser. IE 6.0 ignores the error and displays the new news. Silly sloppy coding.

Hi!!

While I am by no means an industry insider I do have a general knowledge of how the whole thing works. Universal Studios is owned by Vivendi Universal. Universal Studios would be responsible for getting the movie made ie. money etc. But they still need a distributer to get the movie to theatres. That could be where the hang up is since Studios usually want to secure domestic and international distribution rights before a movie is made. (Especially international since that's where the most money is made.)

For a list of what exactly Vivendi Universal owns check out http://www.cjr.org/tools/owners/vivendi.asp

I'd like to repeat that I am NOT in the know about anything, and I could be wrong about how it all works since I'm going by general knowledge and a textboot.

Interesting note though - Vivendi Universal is the only major media company that doesn't own an American broadcast network.

One of the thoughts that I had with Universal is on board is that Maybe they want to replace the cast with big name actors. There is an earler report that says Joss Whedon left a remark that it isn't looking too promising for a green light. But again when ever the producer make a remark things do look promising. Personally I would just be happy to know that the movie is in production or at least to know it has got the green light. We need to know what happens next. Right?

Thanks

A poster on alt.tv.firefly said they had inside information that it is indeed distribution that's the hangup right now. Who knows... we'll see.

Who really knows what the holdup is? We'll know when they tell us.

But here's my 2 cents:

Maybe I'm just a cynical old bastard who plans to hold a particular grudge for at least a decade...but I smell FOX. Thats right FOX. Some screwup over the rights to the movie or some such nonsense.

Lets face it, every problem we've ever had with Firefly begins and ends with that sorry excuse for a network.

Now I'm not frustrated, I'm not angry. But I hold a grudge a long time. And if someday I have me a little bit a power in this world, things are gonna be hard on little old FOX. Yup. Someday...

...and I got a problem with professional basketball too. FOX and professional basketball, someday it'll all come around.

I hope this isn't some battle over so-called big-name casting. How bad could Hollywood screw up the project by shoehorning some big star? Let's cast Madonna as Saffron's sister. Or how about John Travolta as an Evil Alliance Officer who can dance really cool.

Say it ain't so...

I just had a vision of Terl from Battlefield Earth stuffed into a grey Alliance suit.

It wasn't a pretty sight.

From what I've heard, Battlefield Earth is one long unpretty sight ...

Yeah, you're definitely right about that; it ain't a pretty picture. The sad thing is that Battlefield Earth actually had a lot of talented actors in it: Forrest Whitaker, John Travolta, Barry Pepper. I've heard that the novel 'pon which the turkey is based is actually a fun read; haven't read it, so I can't say.

Veering back onto the current topic, *ahem* I do think that re-casting the characters would be a disaster. I can't see any other actors in the places of the Serenity crew, and frankly I can't imagine Badger or Niska being re-cast, either. I mean it. Heck, I even want the actors who played the Blue Hands guys to come back on board for the film! Won't that give us fans a chill in the theatres!
