Of films I've watched on DVD recently, these two may not be well known but well a try.

Kite Runner - a young boy in Afghanistan who cruelly betrays his best friend, then flees the country with his father when the Russians invade only to have to return many years later, when the country is in the clutch of the Taliban, to repay his depth. Visually beautiful and it really gets you a sense of a culture that may be different but still beautiful - and all that historical tragedy. Hopeful, though.

Paris, je t'aime - a movie in episodes, each one a few minutes in a different part of Paris. Sad, hilarious, hopeful, profound... some of the episodes are absolutely great. I adore the one with Natalie Portman and the last one, especially.

One of the Doylesotwn Trilogy, along with The Commitments and The Van. All good.

AR, was that the film that was packaged with some train flick from India or Middle East? Something Express?

Yeah, that was hysterical.

Here's one: The Power, George Hamilton, Suzanne Pleshette, 1969. A tale of psychic intrigue.
Incredibly hard movie to find on DVD (No official release), but here it is:

Oh the POWER - that's a good one Chris. Wow it's been some years since I saw that. Always had a thing for Suzanne Pleshette

I saw mention of The Darjeeling Limited - which is a beautifully understated film. Also by Wes Anderson - The LIfe Aquatic, give that a whirl.

Also just remembered the plethora of Old British films from the Ealing Studio day:
Passport to Pimlico
Captain Paradise
The Lavender Hill Mob

All very good.

Isn't the film called Conrack starring John Voight?

I'm thinking that also had Rachel Leigh Cook, Rachel Griffiths, and Bill Nighy. Charming flick. A similar feel I had from Awful Big Adventure, with Rickman, Georgina Cates, some Hugh guy.

Also just remembered The Last Mimzy, as I was buying it today. Wonderful performances by the kid actors.
And Zathura was quite good as well, better than I expected with such a young cast. Directed by Jon Favreau.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned one of the best
westerns ever made; BAD COMPANY. It perfectly fits
this category, very few people have ever seen it,
but the leader of the rock group Bad Company loved
it so much he named the group, their first album and
their biggest hit after it. If you didn't hate
UNFORGIVEN check this one out. you'll love it

TDBROWN

The Twelve Chairs, a satire about the Russian revolution. Very early Mel Brooks film, with a much more subtle comedic stream to it. Features a young Frank Langella and Dom DeLuise... can't remember the name of the lead Actor. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066495/

On Borrowed Time, 1939, featuring Lionel Barrymore as crusty old "Gramps", who gets Death up a tree... literally. Set in the 1930s, but loosely inspired by one of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031754/

I've got three, two that may not be as obscure and one that defiantly is.

Harald and Maude - one of the most hilarious movies I've seen.

Death Trance - It was described to me as a live-action anime and is one of those WTF movies.

Into the Mirror - this is a Korean film that, to my knowledge, hasn't been released in the US. It's part supernatural thriller, part horror movie, part cop movie, and part mystery. I've only found it via torrents, but it is very good. Assuming you aren't bothered by subtitles.

FREMDFIRMA

If you saw Millenium - get the book, both are good, but you'd appreciate the book a lot more having seen the movie.

NVGhost - I did see Savior and got royally bitched out by my ex(this was before she was ex) for showing it to her cause she found it so terribly, profoundly depressing, but I think there was some guilt there too, seeing the consequences of us-n-them politics from the viewpoint of those impacted personally by them.

Damn good flick, but best watched with a couple valium handy.

My additions to this list.

Wisdom
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092225/
Good flick, and it made a strong impact on me about how when we place the (Felony)"Mark of Doom" on people *forever*, just how horrible that is.

MOMO
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091537/
Extremely good flick, a story which is kind of a parable about how our culture has begun depriving us of life.

Thank you, PizmoBeach, for the heads-up on the Zatoichi films!
Hulu appears to have almost all the ones pre-1970.
(I'd post the link, but this board does funky things with Hulu URLs!)
And I really loved Blind Fury!

Thanks, Kwicko, for alerting me to Lucky Number Slevin, and FYI your other pick, the Andre Braugher Thief, is also on Hulu.

Some of my favorite little-knowns:

Buckaroo Banzai [1984]
Manhunter [1986]
Grand Canyon [1991]
The Hunted [1995]
Crossworlds [1997]
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang [2005]

I have had some difficulty navigating the various posts and films mentioned here - just a bit unwieldy.

Some of the posters in this thread seem no longer around.

My first post in this thread is the 5th overall, and I have tried to list all of the mentioned films of this thread in a summary there.

I am wondering something. How many have used the lists here to choose a film to watch, and how were the results? The results of In Bruges seem mostly positive, with one negative.
I have been quite a film buff for a while, so not many of these left me surprised, just tickling my memory when I read the names.
Is a thread like this useful to those looking for another film to watch? After all, there is usually some reality show we could watch instead.

And a thread of similar topic:

I have no idea why it seems so few have watched Canadian Bacon. The last complete film from John Candy, and likely my favorite, alongside Uncle Buck. Awesome cast, fantastic hilarity (of the Canadian variety).

And Brazil made me a Kim Greist fan.

I rarely run into people who have seen L.A. Confidential. WTF? Although I do rarely suggest a film that Kim Basinger is in - she still has refused to honor her promise to leave America if only we would elect G.W. Bush.
