Another film that I liked, but not at first (I did not see this in the theater), was Prisoners (2013) with Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Mario Bello (whom I love), Melissa Leo and Viola Davis (quite a lineup, eh).

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (yes, the guy from Arrival and now Blade Runner II)

And it is that good. Unrelenting drama, which got 81% on Rotten Tomatoes), it is listed as a thriller, but it doesn't matter because Jackman takes this film by the throat and squeezes...but in a good way. Everyone is solid.

It revolves around the disappearance of a 6-year-old girl (Jackman's daughter) and her friend, and a suspect is arrested, but due to lack of evidence, is released by police. Jackman then goes into overdrive and takes over where the cops can't tread.
Good story and fine acting, especially by Jackman, like I've never seen him before.

Rent it from YouTube for $2.99 - it's a bargain, also Google Play, Amazon, Vudu, iTunes

I thought that Prisoners was pretty well known. I prefer Redbox for a dollar.

Mute Witness was an excellent film, doesn't seem like many have heard of. Excellent tension, suspense, and a "mystery" star in the cast.

I remember there being little buzz about this movie, word of mouth is key but it needs a good outing to succeed. So, how did it do at the box office, let's see:

Quote:

The real story for Prisoners is how it holds up in the long-run. It has good word-of-mouth, though it also faces tough competition in early October. Based on other similar movies at this time, it's likely that Prisoners winds up with between $70 and $80 million, though it's possible that it goes a bit higher.

Source Box Office Mojo

It made $122,000 million overall - $61M both here and overseas; not exactly breaking records is it? By comparison, IT made nearly $80M in one weekend. Prisoners made $20.8M in it's first weekend and it lasted another 10 weeks (until Dec. 3, 2013); so that means it made an average of $4M a week the rest of the way.
Again, not exactly burning theaters down now, is it?

Redbox it is then.

$20.8M in it's first weekend, enough to rank as #1 Box Office on most weekends.
So that is the standard we use for "only a few people know about" now?

By comparison how did Serenity fare?

First, Serenity..............

According to Brandon Gray: "It was neither hit nor flop"

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=1910&p=.htm

Opening weekend it made a little over $10M - it grossed domestically $25,515,000.
Overseas it didn't do as well; only $13,355,000. Of course, Universal didn't do much to promote this film. As I remember, none of the film's starts ever appeared on late night shows.

But the film's stars are well known enough to have appeared on other hit shows: The Last Ship, Suits, Chuck, Gotham, oh and Castle (since Firefly ended it's run). We even have a blockbuster hit in which Morena appears - Deadpool.

Prisoners

Prisoners opened at Number 1 at the Box office with $20.8M, and dropped to $10.8 in it's second weekend; it fell to #2. By the 3rd week it fell to #4 and made just $5.7M (another 47% drop). In it's 4th and 5th weekends it dropped to 6th place; making $3.6M and $2.06M, respectively.

What was Prisoners competition: Rush (Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde) and Battle of the Year (Josh Holloway, Chris Brown)

Not exactly blazing competition. The film was expected to make more...

Like I said, not exactly a barn burner. Did you think it was a popular word-of-mouth movie?

Definition of "only s few people know about it" is #1 at the Box Office, and opening weekend was twice the Box Office that Serenity had.

ok.

Rush - that was an enjoyable film, many memorable scenes in this Ron Howard pic, but I do forget the name of it easily.

Maria Bello?
Until just now I didn't know she was best friends with Carrie-Anne Moss.
I thought she did well in Payback, History of Violence, and Thank You For Smoking.
Been keeping an eye out since she was on the Due South episode One Good Man - the episode following Carrie-Anne's episode, Feb 1996.

Ok, let me ask you this...Did you go to see it theaters when it came out? Do you feel that it's a popular movie? Do people still talk about it today? Does Prisoners have a following that continues supporting the film today? Before I mentioned it, did you know that Denis Villeneuve directed it? This is a 2013 movie that had some success at the box office, but if you were to ask people about it, I would venture a guess that few could rattle off the lead actors and actresses in the movie or even the plot.

I'll give you an example: Serenity. Do you think that it's popular among the masses?
Maybe!

Let's try another one, actually a blast from the past: Beetlejuice, 1988. I would bet at least $20 that anyone you ask in the street would know this cult classic. Yet, as I stated above, Prisoners made a whopping $122M at the box office combined domestic and foreign. Beetlejuice made $73.7M at the box office (BO Mojo gives only the domestic numbers; apparently that was the only thing that mattered in 1988).

Which one do you think is more popular and people know more about? I would dare say Beetlejuice. People still sing the Calypso song: Day-O! What I'm talking about is, despite the fact that Prisoners made more money, not many people know much about it; but by the same token many folk know the 1988 Cult classic and can even give you the plot line. Go ahead, ask 10 random people anywhere which of these 2 movies they've heard about. Ask them what they know about it. We could argue numbers all day, but it won't change the fact that Beetlejuice is more well known.

I went back to the Cinema post that I submitted in May 2014. I got 860 views, but not one response (re: Prisoners).

Interesting.

Anyway, I wouldn't bet the farm on it's being well known.....is all I'm saying.

Apparently not many people know about Wind River. Hopefully that will change come Awards season.

No Firefly episode was broadcast 15 years ago this week, so I rewatched Maria Bello's episode of Due South.
It's the episode where everybody in Fraser's apartment building gets evicted. Maria is adorable as star reporter for the indie paper Guardian.

'King of Comedy' many times better than Joker which was an ok film i guess but I have no true idea why Conservative Republicans were fawning over it maybe guessing here... because it got into that whole Left vs Right, Conservative vs Liberal political thing during election season???

Don't watch Joker instead watch King of Comedy
