'...Whedon says he trusts the network. "The executives I’m dealing with are canny guys."

By canny, does he mean Fox has given him assurances that it will be patient with the show? More or less.
"They’re bringing down expectations regarding how big of an audience they think it will bring in the beginning, and then as the show progresses."'

No: he means that they're businessmen who know a profitable formula when they see one:

(1) commission a SF show from a cult writer/producer
(2) stick it in a graveyard slot so you don't risk much advertising revenue (most of the target audience will TiVO it and skip the ads anyway)
(3) Don't bother to market it much

Now, at this point either:

(4a) The viral marketing will kick in and you'll have another X-Files on your hands.
or:
(4b) It will tank, get cancelled, and a year or two later become a cult hit - you can then make a metric shedload of money on DVD sales. If you're really lucky you can sell the movie rights to another company and they'll bankroll a 120 minute theatrical commercial that'll keep your series DVDs in the Amazon top ten for two years...

Either way, ker-ching.

According to www.zap2it.com NUMB3RS had a 4.7/8 rating, Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader had a 3.8/7 rating last Friday night. Friday night does not = death.

SUASOR

Well, "platforming a show" (opening a quirky movie in a small number of theaters and waiting for it to grow virally) has a respectable history. Many past TV hits started out slow, and it could be net execs are willing to try the "be patient and they will come" approach again. Given the possibility of an actors strike, it makes sense. And with TV audience and advertising numbers sliding continually, the long game makes more sense.

Maybe.

Who knows?
