I hate to think of the cew as actors but just curious as to others thoughts about which character has to emote the most...
for instance.. I adore Kaylee but pretty much she is smilin' or furrowing her brow.

She understands, she doesn't comprehend

SEVENPERCENT

Summer Glau as River- Absolutely 100% - Look at the stuff she has to do to play that character- And she gets some really twisted dialogue to work with too, I think they mentioned that on the commentaries-
After that I would say AB, because the larger than life Jayne comes off as a real guy-

He looked bigger when I couldn't see him.

River.

I don't know the actresses name off hand. I remember her playing a Russian ballerina in an old ep of Angel. Since then, we have had the great pleasure of watching this young woman steal every scene she appears in. Now, the rest of the cast are hardly slouches in the acting department but when the River character shows up we are always watching her. We can't take our eyes off her. We just have no idea what she will do next.

Now, it would be pretty easy to play 'insane'. Just scream a little and act weird right? This is the sort of thing you see on most TV 'dramas'. I'm constantly surprised when River seemlessly wanders into a scene and recreates everything that's happening in a deep way. Sure, it's the shows wonderful writing that offers these situations but it's the actor who has to play it.

And she plays it sooo well!

Inara is surprisingly good as well. That role isn't easy either. :)

I agree with you 7% about AB partly because I understand he is a rather well educated gentlemanly golf player in real life

I think I must agree. I remember one scene when she's fixing the bible - her eyes keep darting back and forth as she talks to Book. Unsettling. All the little things that Summer Glau adds to her character are truly wonderful.

Hmmmmm...I don't often comment on acting. It's not a craft I'm all that familiar with.

There are three that I really enjoy, though.

#3 Ron Glass: I can't think of anything I've seen him in that I didn't love. He's a classic.

#2 Summer Glau: I agree with those who call her a "scene stealer". I can't grade her any further than that because I have not seen her elsewhere. I don't recall her part much on Angel; it wasn't a very memorable episode for me.

#1 Adam Baldwin: What I've seen of him so far in the films I've watched tells me that he's extremely versitile. His characters so far have always been believable even in the face of some seriously bad writing. I'm looking forward to THE RIGHT TEMPATION (with Keiffer Sutherland, too! Yay!) and his very early work in MY BODYGUARD. Should get both of those by mid next week.

This might sound like just going with the no 1, cos he is the top man on the show, but I'm going to say Nathan Fillion.

He conveys so much sometimes in just a look (The Message, Heart of Gold, Serenity Pilot) and it works so well. I know the show is layered with comedy moments and I love it, but I also do love the dark moments, guess thats why I like Angel more than Buffy come to think of it. In Firefly he does everything from being a joker to meeting the real him, as Shan Yu (sp) put it, and we see him full of fury. It was very much a multi layered role with lots of different angles to try and I think he successfully captured them all.

I also love Adam Baldwin for his comedy entrances and constantly sniffing and tasting things. I really dont think there is a single weak link in the cast.

I really, really can't choose just one, because it's the interactions that make the whole thing come alive. But I agree with you about Nathan Fillion. Whether it's a funny moment or a dramatic one, he nails it every single time. He's amazing.

SHAMBLEAU

I agree with SevenPercent and Ghoulman, Summer Glau. She has the least to work with to develop her character, and yet she hits her scenes out of the park.

My one technical complaint with her is her laugh - it feels forced sometimes. A couple of the actors in one of the commentaries mentioned how much they hated laughing scenes and how hard they were. That's where experience comes in handy and Summer has almost none.

I'd put Nathan fillion second. He has THE major role and he carries off everything they give him, including the undertones. I'd fault him for one thing, but it may be in the writing, not his portrayal. That would be in how aware he is of Inara's attraction to him. She's shown it often enough, but in HOG and other eps he varies in his awareness of it.

Adam Baldwin is third. It's hard to play a man who's stupid in some ways, but no fool in others. AB pulls it off easily.

The others are bunched closely behind and my ratings change with my mood. I don't know who is actually the best actor of the bunch, by the way. I'm rating them on how much they've done with what they've been given.

Jewel Staite could be higher, for example, but Kaylee's a relatively simple character, so, so far, Jewel hasn't had as many chances to shine. Her work when Early threatens Kaylee was riveting though, as Joss said in the commentary. Given the chance she showed she can do great work. And that's true of the whole cast.

I think I'm gonna have to jump in with the majority here.

Summer Glau

This is pretty much her first ever full time acting job, and look at the job she does.

SPECTRE

It's a toss up between Ron Glass and Adam Baldwin.

Mr Glass... what a wonderful treasure of the entertainment industry. My goodness the quality of his body of work is just brought to full bore in the way he understates his perormance on the show. If you ever saw the episode where he played Satan on the 80's remake of The Twilight Zone it'll make you chill. Excellemt actor indeed.

Adam Baldwin... He's done some real bad movies in his day but he was never bad in them. How can you forget him in Full Metal Jacket! (I have a bias agains Stanly Kubrick) The way he attacks his role as Jayne is so texured and layered. In Ariel when he said that Simons plan was good didn't you feel the insecurities that foreshadowed his actions later in the ep?

More than my two bits... sorry.
