Only if there is intrinsic value for the living does that matter. If an object has value only to me and I die, then it has no value.

Some people may act like this. Some people my look for secrets (or remember things forgotten) to keep the deceased in mind. Some people are looking for answers. Some people are tying up loose ends. Whatever the motivation, it's only the concerns of the living that matter at this point.

Well, on behalf of my fellow Browncoats, I'd like to blow you a great, big raspberry!

See, here's the thing I see you're uncomprehending on: There's no shame in mourning or rallying around a fellow fan who turns out to be alive and well after all. The times we trust one another and are justified more than make up for the times we're "duped".

Of COURSE you tricked us. What did it show? That we DO care about one another. Good job, you're OBVIOUSLY smarter than we are...

No kidding- And it showed that as a society we take suicide very seriously- This is someone who down the road will cry when something he/she likes gets squashed, then will wonder why no one feels any sympathy-
Now LoveKaylee, run along like the cute little retard that you are and go sabotage something useless, like the Simple Life fansite-
Oh, and here's my parting gift to you-

On the topic of logging in to a dead loved one's accounts: I've belonged to Internet communities in which a member died, and friends/family wanted to notify all the people whom he talked with daily. They had to log in as the user to get that information.

Also, in the event of a friend's suicide, I think I would probably invade his privacy to look for some explanation for what he had done.

I'm very glad this was a hoax, but I have to say I was stunned that there was no backlash to the "I hope he bought DVDs" remark. I was getting ready to compose an angry post until I (fortunately) got the bottom of the thread!

Sure, it's like looking thru an address book, I think that's ok as long as that's all it is and not lingering on personal private e-journals, etc.

Maybe it would help, maybe it wouldn't. But wouldn't you think it would have been more helpful if one could have posed the question earlier - perhaps before hand. Keep in contact and really talk instead of just kinda hang out, drink beer, and watch TV. Just offering my stand, I am not judging. In any case, if crime was involved, then it certainly stands to chance to look for evidence anywhere you can... Suicide - hmmmmm... I think it's borderline (like I said before here and previously in another post). But I say no to just plain being snoopy.

So run their IP, call it in to their provider, and their local law enforcement (there's provisions under identity theft law for this sort of thing) - I know that sounds "too much like work" but one of the real hassles of the internet is the lack of consequences for this sort of behavior directly encourage it.

That's for Haken and Southern Slayer to do, or not, as they wish - but do bear in mind if you don't drop a big heavy boot on such crap at the very start, it can sink an internet community in short order, some of us have watched it happen all too many times.

So I'd seriously reccommend an ass kicking here to put paid to this kind of thing before it becomes common.

Oh, aren't you the clever one. (Please note heavy sarcasm)

The only thing you proved is that as a community we care about one of our own. If anything, that shows that we pull together and we have a heart.

On the flip side, there are losers like you LoveKaylee Or FireflyFanatic, whatever name you want to go by. Aren't you special, you post on a message board where no one but the Admin can prove who you are. You are so very clever......in your own mind.

Seems you have a lot of free time on your hands. The sad thing is that the only ones laughing here, are us, not you. You obviously have no life, and pulling a sick joke like this is how you get your sick thrills. Run out of flies to pull the wings off of? So we all get to set back, point at you and how pitiful and idiotic your attempt at a "joke" is, and how foolish you come off looking.

Don't worry about Firefly, the movie, or the board. We did well enough long before you skulked in, and we will be doing well after you skulk back to your child porn site, sitting alone in your little apartment, all alone, with no friends or family.

Just crawl back into your hole & don't show your face here anymore.

I think I am getting what you are saying. Let me take a stab at it. You are saying that once a person is dead, they do not physically have a way to influence on the state of affairs. I think I can agree with you there - although folks who believe in the paranormal who think otherwise. But I think you person who has now expired can still have their way by having expressed their wishes before hand, I think there are both legal and moral precedents that illustrates this. Think of the will (something very legalstic and more powerful) and the little blue dot on the driver license (more social contract'ish than the legal stuff). The will allows the dead, not physically, but perhaps legally to enforce their wishes (sure, you can't say that " I want Sue and Jack to be killed after I am done", it's got to be up and up) . That's even after they have died.

And think about all of the stories about the Dead Man's last wish/words. You've got to do it! It was his last wish!

I certainly understand why people in the family would want to pry. People wants to pry into JFK's and Nixon's private memoirs too. But those don't get opened up until most everyone who cares to remember is also dead. Anyways, all I am saying is that, I think there are legal and social aspects of it to carry out the dead's former wishes.

It looks like we have the happy middle ground. I'll also agree that a deceased and their last wishes command a great deal of respect - from most of us. That's where law steps in to dictate what is socially acceptable.

Haven't heard a peep about this "person" or whether or not they had been banned.

Clicking on "its" profile, looks like they have not been here since 1/28 @ 07:40, just after they admitted to being a cave dwelling troll.

Good riddance.

That doesn't keep him from anonymously reading these posts. Or signing up as another user with another (unbanned) IP address/e-mail address. I can't imagine him just leaving like that, and not enjoying all the turmoil.

Zombies don't. In particular, flesh-eating zombies have no rights. Unless it's to ketchup.

PHLEBOTININ

I heartily second all those who are calling for action against this pathetic troll. I find her/him/its behavior beyond offensive. Having known someone who committed suicide I -- well, I won't say anymore. But I'm mad and deeply offended on both SouthernSlayer's behalf and on the behalf of all of the fireflyfans.net commnity. I hope that Haken or whomever can do something to prevent this idiot from coming back.

I did find the "gee hope he bought some Firefly DVDs" line to be really bizarre at the time I read it. But you see, that's the thing about a community, whether it's online or not. Your first instinct is to at least initially trust other members and to circle the wagons; it's an unspoken agreement. Someone purposely violating the trust and then sneering about it hasn't pulled anything clever off. It's easy to take a big stinkin' dump in the village square. But really, what else does that accomplish but show that you're a total idiot?
